They’re on their 41st tour which you’ll read on as you wander; this poster I snapped was displayed at Jalapenos. I wonder who created the woodcut? I also wondered if multi-talented Rose Sheehan, Cape Ann Contra Dance, was involved. Yes. And her son Colin de la Barre (another name befitting a pursuit!) Gloucester Daily Times has the story.
You might fill your Aug. 13th dance card. Whether audience or participant, one could make it a daylong celebration of beauty, sport and nature. Not 41 years, but pretty darn close, the Celebrate the Clean Harbor Swimis 38 years young and scheduled earlier that morning. Reminds me: check the GMG calendar for options. Every weekend in Gloucester is like First Night. A few of the other special events planned for August 13: Cape Ann Museum has a walking tour and White Ellery contemporary installation. Cape Ann Community Cinema features two films. Gloucester Stage has a live theater show for kids in the morning and 2 shows for Songs For A New World (one is pay what you wish).
I bet you can reel off a few of the chart topping rock groups circa late 1970s. Who knew that there was a 1979 American folk dance held in St. Ann’s parish hall? The dances were started by Patricia and Norris Marston who hoped to build interest for regular square dances in Gloucester and perhaps raise funds to hire bands. One night Roger Whynott was a featured caller. On another evening it was Charlie Webster calling out folk, square and contra. – Gloucester Daily Times

Live Theater Performances of Classic Stories for Young Audience Members Age 3 and Older
Gloucester Stage Company proudly continues Playtime Stories, an engaging combination of children’s stories and live performances for ages 3 and older, on Saturday, June 25 at 10 am at Gloucester Stage, 267, East Main Street, Gloucester. Playtime Stories offers young children the unique opportunity to experience the fun and magic of live theater as they watch their favorite books come to life onstage. Following the performance audience members will be invited to join the Playtime Stories Company in fun and interactive workshops relating to the story. Each Saturday the Playtime Stories Company, consisting of members of Gloucester Stage’s apprentice company, veteran Youth Acting Workshop students and special guest narrators will perform a children’s story against the backdrop of the story’s illustrations as well as create a dynamic weekly series of interactive events related to the story. Each week Playtime Stories explores different stories ranging from classic fairy tales to new stories to works by local authors. The books for June 25 are The Three Little Pigs and The Little Red Hen. Upcoming weeks include the books: Curious Georgeand Little Bunny Foo Foo on July 9. Other Stories planned for July include Virginia Lee Burton’sMike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Rumpelstiltskin, and the Dr. Seuss classics, The Loraxand What Pet Should I Get? Maybe it will be increased by it’s 10th year anniversary summer 2017? Across the state over the past 9 years, “CFF has awarded grants of $91.9 million to nearly 700 projects across the Commonwealth. Demand for CFF grants continues to outpace supply…The new round includes 68 capital grants totaling $8.9 million and another 23 planning grants totaling just over $400,000. Grants range from $7,000 to $300,000, and must be matched one-to-one from private and/or other public sources.”

Gloucester Stage Company Receives Four Elliot Norton Award Nominations
The Boston Theater Critics Association (BTCA) recently announced The 34th Annual Elliot Norton Award nominations featuring over 25 nominations of outstanding actors, directors, designers and ensembles. Gloucester Stage Company received a total of 4 nominations for the non-profit theater’s 2015 season. Gloucester Stage Artistic Director Robert Walsh received both acting and directing nominations. Winners are to be revealed at the 34th Annual Elliot Norton Awards on Monday, May 23, 2016 at 7 PM, at Boston’s Citi Performing Arts Center Shubert Theatre.
The Gloucester Stage Company nominations include three for Enda Walsh’s The New Electric Ballroom: Outstanding Production by a Small Theater; Outstanding Director, Small or Fringe Theater: Robert Walsh and Outstanding Ensemble, Midsize, Small or Fringe Theater:Nancy E. Carroll, Marya Lowry, Adrianne Krstansky, and Derry Woodhouse; and one nomination for Israel Horovitz’s Gloucester Blue:Outstanding Actor, Small or Fringe Theater: Robert Walsh.
“I am hugely grateful to the Norton Award Committee for this honor,” says double nominee Gloucester Stage Artistic Director Robert Walsh, “I’m so delighted for the cast of The New Electric Ballroom – they were so amazing to collaborate with, and I am in Israel’s debt for such a great role in his play, Gloucester Blue.”
The Elliot Norton Awards are named for the eminent Boston theater critic Elliot Norton, who remained an active supporter of drama, both locally and nationally, until his death in 2003 at the age of 100. The Boston theater community carries on his legacy and can be proud of its remarkable growth at a time in our nation’s history when the arts are struggling to survive. The awards are presented annually by The Boston Theater Critics Association (BTCA) (Don Aucoin, Jared Bowen, Terry Byrne, Carolyn Clay, Nick Dussault, Iris Fanger, Joyce Kulhawik, Kilian Melloy, Bob Nesti, and Ed Siegel) to honor the outstanding productions, directors, designers, and performers that audiences have seen on Greater Boston area stages throughout the year.
The 34th Annual Elliot Norton Awards will be held at the Citi Performing Arts Center Shubert Theatre, 265 Tremont St., Boston, on Monday, May 23 at 7 PM. Gloucester Stage Wins 2 Top Boston Critics’ Awards
The Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Awards Ceremony was held Monday, April 11, 2016 at the 1200 Hotel Ballroom (Holiday Inn) in Brookline, MA where the awards for the 2015 Calendar Year were announced. The IRNE Awards honor the best of the previous year’s actors, directors, designers and companies across the full spectrum of large, midsize and fringe theater companies in the New England area. Gloucester Stage garnered two of the top acting awards in the Midsize Company Category: Best Actor Drama: Nael Nacer for The Flick and Best Supporting Actor Drama: Derry Woodhouse for The New Electric Ballroom. Nael Nacer was present at the ceremony to accept his award. Derry Woodhouse was unable to attend and Gloucester Managing Director Jeff Zinn accepted the acting award on his behalf.
Gloucester Stage Company received a total of nine nominations for the 2015 season. Gloucester Stage’s 2015 Playwriting Apprentice
Gloucester Stage proudly presents the world premiere of Lucas Baisch’s A Measure of Normalcy from October 22 through November 1 at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. Developed as part of the Gloucester Stage 2015 Apprentice Playwriting Program, A Measure of Normalcyfollows an array of lost souls as they straggle inside a quickly emptying Midwestern mini-mall. In the bleak late summer nineteen-year-old Casey Calloway works the food court tending to her burrito stand while Ari, Casey’s cousin, runs a shifty business out of their grandmother’s basement. The arrival of Gus, the new-hire, incites an unveiling of secrets within this stagnant community. Filled with balloon animals, cartoon flashbacks, cheap raps, and hallucinogenic gecko feces, this dark comedy questions what it means to be “normal” in a place of overwhelming simplicity.

Keep Warm, stay inside this MLK weekend and watch “Holiday Delights” on Cape Ann TV Channel 12. This latest version of the Gloucester Stage perennial favorite Christmas play was filmed with three cameras last month. It features over 30 young actors from the Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop and tells the story of a Gloucester girl who finds the true meaning of Christmas on Christmas Eve. The program airs Saturday, January 17 at 9 am and 5 pm; Sunday, January 18 at 8 am; and Monday, January 19 at 9 am and 6 pm. See complete Cape Ann TV Schedule here.

Students will learn to communicate through yoga, movement and sign language as well as learn the basics of acting, scene study and stage technique. Israel Horowitz’s Pulitzer-nominated “North Shore Fish” premiered at Gloucester Stage in 1986, has since been produced off Broadway in New York City, then all over the world, adapted into a TV movie in 1997 and is back at Gloucester Stage again with an excellent cast, whose performances will have you riveted from the very first scene.
Yes, it’s fun to hear the names of familiar Gloucester places batted about by actors on a stage. And the fish processing set, replete with real lockers, production line, shrink wrapper and plenty of doors to slam will take anyone who’s ever labored in food service or production right back to work. Plus, I have to admit I was eager to see Tip O’Neill’s grandson, Thomas Phillip O’Neill in one of the lead roles as Porker.
While any of these, along with the fact that many consider North Shore Fish to be one of Israel Horowitz’s best plays, would be reason enough go see it, the REAL reason is that Gloucester Stage’s production of North Shore Fish will make you think and feel in ways you’ve never experienced before. That’s what good theatre does — and this is theatre at its best.
According to Horovitz, “North Shore Fish, to my thinking, is a play about love and dignity in the workplace.” You might ask yourself, well what else is there? What else do we really want besides love and dignity and work that matters? North Shore Fish will help you appreciate what you have and question your priorities. And you’ll realize that this drama doesn’t happen only in Gloucester. That’s why North Shore Fish has universal appeal.
If you’re a Cape Ann Resident, you can see this play for a mere twenty bucks this Wednesday or Thursday at 8pm. North Shore Fish only runs through this Sunday, August 4. It would be a shame if you missed it. Call box office at 978-281-4433 for tickets.

Iconic Play with Local Connection
This play reading celebrates the 100th anniversary of distinguished American writer N. Richard Nash’s birth. The iconic play, The Rainmaker was written about the drought leading into the dust bowl. The evening includes a casual reception and conversation with Gloucester resident Amanda Nash, daughter of the playwright, following the reading.
The Rainmaker cast includes many Gloucester Stage favorites:
The reading is directed by Barlow Adamson who shared the GSC stage with Richard Snee and Steven Barkhimer in the Alan Ayckbourn’s Norman Conquests Trilogy from 2010 through 2012. Johnny Lee Davenport starred in 2012’s Master Harold… and the Boys and returns later in the GSC’s 2013 season to star in Driving Miss Daisy with Lindsay Crouse. The Rainmaker takes place during the time of a paralyzing drought in the West. A plain girl whose father and two brothers are worried as much about her potential future as an old maid as they are about the drought and their dying cattle. The brothers try every possible scheme to marry her off, but without success and there any sign of relief from the dry heat. Suddenly from out of nowhere appears a picaresque, sweet-talking man with quite the sales pitch. Claiming to be a “rainmaker,” the man promises to bring rain, for $100. It’s a silly idea, but the rainmaker is so refreshing and persistent that the family finally consents, banging on big brass drums to rattle the sky. Meanwhile the rainmaker also turns his magic on the girl, and persuades her that she has a very real beauty of her own. She believes it, just as her father believes the fellow can actually bring rain. Rain does come, and so does love.

Gloucester Stage offers discount tickets to Cape Ann residents to Israel Horovitz’s Gloucester play, North Shore Fish running at Gloucester Stage through Sunday, August 4. A limited amount of discount tickets are available to Cape Ann residents for all Wednesday and Thursday 8 pm performances. For these performances only, Cape Ann residents can purchase discounted tickets for $20. Advance reservations are strongly suggested to ensure tickets at the discounted price. Year round Cape Ann residents must identify themselves as Cape Ann residents when making a reservation and proof of residency must be presented at the box office the night of the performance.
The North Shore Fish performance schedule is Thursday, July 18 through Saturday, July 20 at 8 pm; Wednesday, July 24 through Saturday, July 27 at 8 pm; Wednesday, July 31 through Saturday, August 3 at 8 pm, Saturday matinees on July 20, July 27 and August 3 at 3 pm & Sunday performances on July 21, July 28 and August 4 at 4 pm.
