Many familiar faces and organizations came together in support of Senior Care’s Meals On Wheels, and showed up early to help host a festive and delicious event. We enjoyed sharing a table with staff from Cape Ann Savings Bank, GoldenLiving Center, and Betty and John Erikkala from Lanesville. The Valentine’s Day fundraiser buffet breakfast was pushed back to March 10 due to the winter storm. March being March it was lightly snowing when we left.
I missed John and Betty Erkkala’s Souvenirs of Lanesville talk at Cape Ann Museum about their new book, but noticed the pocket ornament. The book is available at the museum shop. Our marvelous city archives were mentioned once or twice!
Custom place mats gave thanks for the wonderful sponsors. You’ll recognize people in the photographs affiliated with these organizations and businesses.

Anita’s son David served in the Marine Corps and was killed in action on August 1, 2005. She and her husband, Greg, help returning veterans. They spoke about her son and some of the projects they’ve supported. Good Morning Gloucester readers may remember Anita’s joy in finding a Paul Frontiero “Art, Rocks!”, and donating a flag to the Boulevard. Anita’s mom was born in Gloucester in 1917; her Uncle was dear friends with Pauline Bresnahan’s father.
Adam Curcuru and the veterans office volunteers discussed projects that the Cape Ann Veterans Services is involved with. Stories were shared and a few tears. It was all very inspiring. We passed around a copy of the children’s book that is going to all the elementary school classes for Veterans Day. We spent time admiring the Welcome Home to Cape Ann Veterans Gift Packages, a program “designed to show Cape Ann’s appreciation for our returning veterans and let them know that Cape Ann supports them in this process of transitioning out of the military and back into our community.”
With or without the Gloucester family connections, I believe that Anita and Greg are so impressed by the Cape Ann Veterans Services that they would be delighted to work together anyhow. What seat should you pick at the HarborWalk Summer Cinema? Don’t worry–you’ll find a spot even though people stream into I4 C2 as early as 5:30PM to square away their seating, often novel. A family with an inflatable pool is a regular sight. Blankets are thrown down pell-mell. Kids zig zag a sea of boundaries as they might a sandy beach, which means your stuff is stepped on. It’s all good! There’s a happy community picnic vibe. Soon after 6PM Aurelia Nelson from North Shore Radio 104.9 hosts pre-screening festivities. Rob Newton, Cape Ann Community Cinema, presides; the movie line ups he’s selected have been big hits.
Gloucester = food.
Our family takes a break from cooking and buys dinner from the vendors and/or take out from a downtown business. Once house guests treated us to a lobster dinner AND movie al fresco at Blue Collar Lobster, Gloucester House. It can be done. Has anyone tried it with Topside Grill?

Come on down to the Gloucester House on Saturday evening, March 19th at 6pm, for the annual Docksiders’ Wine Tasting event!
Here’s a great opportunity to support this terrific band in their continuing effort to positively represent not only Gloucester High School, but the City of Gloucester!
These kids work their rear ends off and are a worthy source of pride, but like everything, it takes a continual flow of resources to keep them going. The wine tasting, concert, and gift basket auction are a terrific opportunity to stop by and show these talented young musicians how much they are appreciated. Spread the word and bring your friends.

I am looking forward to celebrating International Women’s Day, or Festa Della Donna, tonight with friends at the Gloucester House. We’ll be honoring Mayor Romeo-Thekan!
I was curious about the yellow flower that is traditionally given to women on International Women’s Day and it is the mimosa flower (Acacia dealbata), which has become a symbol of female solidarity. Immediately following World War II, it became popular in Italy to give the flower for La Festa Della Donna because of its cheery hue, sweet scent, and abundance in blossoms at that time of year.
International Women’s Day began as a day of memory and protest, following a tragic event that took place in 1908. One story of its origins purports that in early March of that year, the women textile workers (mostly Italian) at a New York City factory went on strike to protest the abhorrent working conditions. The owner blocked all of the exits to the factory and set the building on fire. The 129 workers trapped inside all died.
