GLOUCESTER HONORS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

The following is Mayor Sefatia’s message from this morning and tonight, the light at City Hall tower is shining red in honor of International Women’s Day.

“Today, March 8th, is International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for women to take action helping to show unity and strength, with many also participating in “A Day Without Woman” which asks women take the day off from their job.

Here in Gloucester, we ask people to wear red to show support and for those of us who cannot afford to take the day off, we will be sounding the bells at Gloucester City Hall at 12 Noon and lighting the tower red. At that time, we will be taking a moment of silence to honor all women. If you are with another woman at 12 Noon, please show appreciation directly. Though many are asked not to shop today, if you are, please shop locally today and support businesses owned by women. By recognizing the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system and taking actions in solidarity with other community, we are proud of all women and we remind all in our community to cherish one another today. Thank you!”

TODAY I RISE

Where are you, where are you?

The world is missing what I am willing to give

My sweetness

My love

And my hunger for peace

I rise and shine

and I’m ready to go on my quest

Today I rise without doubt or hesitation

UNITY, REFLECTION, ADVOCACY, AND ACTION ~ FIGLI DI TRAPPETO 11th INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION!

A wonderful time was had by all at the Festa della Donna celebration, hosted by Figli di Trappeto, and held Saturday evening at the Gloucester House Restaurant. The guests included a tremendous group of Cape Ann’s community-spirited women. international-womens-day-gloucester-2017-4

Each year a special guest is recognized for her commitment to the people of Gloucester and Cape Ann. Gloucester’s beloved Rosaria Giambanco-Floyd was honored for her generosity towards the ill, the elderly, the homeless, and especially for the care and love she provides to members of the community who are suffering from cancer.

Gloucester Celebrates International Women’s Day!

International Women's Day Festa della Donna Figli di Trappeto Gloucester MA. -10 JPGInternational’s Women’s Day, or Festa della Donna, held last night at the Gloucester House Restaurant and hosted by Figli di Trappeto was, simply put, a smashing fun time. In attendance were an amazing group of Gloucester community-minded women and it was an honor to be with such a group, and all gathered under one roof!

Crocetta Groppo gave a heart felt speech honoring Gloucester’s first Sicilian-American woman mayor, Mayor Sefatia Romeo Thekan. The guests included State Representative Ann Margaret Ferrante, Angela Sanfilippo, and Mayor Romeo Thekan’s sisters Rosaria Floyd and Marianne Pacquette. The Gloucester House was transformed into a charming country western club with cheery red and white checked tablecloths, golden yellow sunflowers, red bandanas, milk bottle vases, and rustic touches abounding. After a delicious dinner of fried chicken, ribs, succotash, and macaroni and cheese, dancing ensued well into the night.

Last night The Figli di Trappeto women hosted their annual International Women’s day celebration with a country western theme. Due to a conflict in schedule I was unable to attend this year but my girlfriends and family captured the event Beautifully! Enjoy!

Happy International Women’s Day!

I am looking forward to celebrating International Women’s Day, or Festa Della Donna, tonight with friends at the Gloucester House. We’ll be honoring Mayor Romeo-Thekan!

I was curious about the yellow flower that is traditionally given to women on International Women’s Day and it is the mimosa flower (Acacia dealbata), which has become a symbol of female solidarity. Immediately following World War II, it became popular in Italy to give the flower for La Festa Della Donna because of its cheery hue, sweet scent, and abundance in blossoms at that time of year.

International Women’s Day began as a day of memory and protest, following a tragic event that took place in 1908. One story of its origins purports that in early March of that year, the women textile workers (mostly Italian) at a New York City factory went on strike to protest the abhorrent working conditions. The owner blocked all of the exits to the factory and set the building on fire. The 129 workers trapped inside all died.
