T Max has a new CD, new live shows and a new Noise magazine this week

T Max, founder/editor of The Noise, New England’s longest running music magazine, is all over Gloucester this month.  You can see him on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, which airs on Cape Ann TV tomorrow (WED) at 6:30pm, Friday at 1:30pm and Sunday at 6pm.  For all you Noise readers who don’t live on Cape Ann, catch the show on-line here.

Then on Thursday, you can see him live at Giuseppe’s in Gloucester with the Singer Songwriter Shuffle.  On April 17 he’s Fly Amero’s guest at The Rhumb Line.  Speaking of Fly, he’s on the cover of The Noise this month and guess who wrote the cover story?  (Read it here).  Tomorrow, Fly welcomes his family as special guests at The Rhumb Line for a very special surprise birthday party for his sister Joyce.

And to top it off, T Max has a new CD, Thinking Up A Dream (get it here) featuring eight brand-new original songs, one of which is based on a spontaneous burst of creativity he had while we were shooting a video series about music in Gloucester.  More on that in this post.

Just to get you in the mood, we’ll leave you with Allen Estes’ only protest song (with a reggae beat) that T Max inspired him to sing when he was Allen’s guest on Local Music Seen.  You can see Allen tonight with Dave Brown, Dave Mattacks, Wolf Ginandes and J.B. Follow John Rockwell around town tonight

This could be a record: you can see a the same local artist in 3 different venues in one night.  So John Rockwell fans are in for a treat.  And if you’re not already a fan, you don’t know what you’re missing.  It’ll be a nice night, so take this perfect opportunity and go see him.

If you bought an Irish Sweepstakes ticket, you’ll see John singing Irish songs at Gloucester House tonight starting at 5pm.

Then you can bop on over to Alchemy and catch his set with Robert Erinn Brown at 7.

And off you go to Rhumb Line to see him (and Robert) as Fly Amero’s special guest just after 9pm.  If you’re not familiar with John’s full, smooth, robust voice (Vickie says it has sex appeal), check out the video of John with another of our favorite voices, Sarah Slifer, nicely shot by FOB Joanne Silva.

Going out tonight is a perfect way to gear up for a great weekend of music starting tomorrow and to prepare for Friday, when you’re just gonna have to choose from among Cape Ann’s best musicians all playing on the same night.  Check the Friday schedule here and start planning now.

Temple Ahavat Achim (86 Middle St. in Gloucester, MA) continues to bring back its popular coffeehouse to sell out audiences, Café Shalom, on Saturday, March 2nd, from 7:00 to 10:00 PM, with an evening of contemporary acoustic music.

Café Shalom will serve hot beverages and snacks. All are welcome; there is no dress or age requirement and families are welcome.  Refreshments will be available. Admission is $10 at the door, doors open at 6:30 PM.

The featured performer will be recording artist Fly Amero. Left-handed, upside-down guitarist/singer/journeyman Dennis “Fly” Amero finds his musical roots deep within the vast genres of the ’60’s pop revolution.  Fly moved to New York City, joining in on musical projects with members of the pop/rock bands, Foreigner and Meatloaf. In the early 1980’s, Fly struck upon the start of what would become a lifelong friendship with the classic pop singer, Larry Hoppen of “Orleans”. He joined, toured and recorded with the famed group for the better part of 3 years before returning Gloucester to focus on his own writing.  His remarkable versatility led to the writing and co-producing of Atlantic’s holiday comedy album classic, Twisted Christmas, which quickly became certified gold in 1995.  Fly is currently touring as a member of “Orleans” and fronts the thrilling rock/blues act known as “The Big Strum”.

The opening performer will be Bob Kramer with Al Foucault on bass.
The duo plays a blend of acoustic rock/blues/jazz creating ‘rootsy, rockin’ & blue’ sound that echoes from the Delta to the urban landscape with its unique arrangement of cover songs and original songs.  Bob and Al have opened for The Pete Best Band (original Beatles drummer), recording blues artists Paul Rishell and Annie Raines and host the open mic at the Grog in Newburyport.  Bob has produced two CDs, a solo CD, Honorable mention in the Billboard Songwriting Contest and has performed at the Terra Blues Club in the Village in New York City.

I wish I could fly.  That’s the title of a gorgeous Christmas song by Fly Amero & Allen Estes (Fly gets top billing — it’s not called I wish I could Allen).

You can hear this song on Aurelia Nelson’s show Curtain Up on North Shore 104.9 FM Tomorrow (Sunday, Dec 23) at 9am.  You’ll also hear a beauty by Aaron Neville.  If you were lucky, you saw Aaron Neville at North Shore Music Theatre in August with Henri Smith opening.

And tonight you’ve got excellent live music choices in all four Cape Ann towns.  See the live music lineup here.

Love Christmas music or not, lots of great live music choices in Gloucester tonight

Those of you who like Christmas music are in luck tonight.  Fly Amero is signing Christmas songs with his brother J.B. and Allen Estes at the Rhumbline tonight starting at 8pm.

Then catch the Local Music Seen with Allen Estes 2011 Christmas Special at 11pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 (originally aired last year) featuring Dan King, Daisy Nell & Capt. Stan, Ann Marie, Bradley Royds, Inge Berge, Chelsea Berry, Dave Sag, Courtney Reid and Allen’s son Dylan Estes.  Here’s a video of many of the performers singing Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Of course, there’s lots of other excellent music in town (not necessarily Christmas — see full schedule here), including Dennis Monagle with Marina Evans, Joe Cardoza and Dave Brown at Minglewood Tavern starting at 9pm.

Don’t panic, we’ve figured tonight out for you

Raffle Prizes for the GCA FundraiserYou’re overwhelmed.  So are we.  That’s why we’ve got an itinerary that you can follow to make sure you get everything you really want to do into tonight.  It’s good practice for tomorrow (Men’s night in case you haven’t been paying attention).

For those of you who like to start early, it’s dinner at Jalapenos GCA fundraiser at 5pm.  While you’re there, enter to win some great prizes pictured to the right.  You don’t have to be present when the prizes are drawn in order to win.  Just be sure your name is on the raffle ticket.

At 6:30 catch the PART 1 premiere of Dan King on his Local Music Seen with Allen Estes farewell tribute with special guest J.B. Amero that we previewed in this post.  You can run home to catch the show, or, better yet, ask the bar manager where ever you are to turn the TV to Channel 12.

Then at 7, head over to Alchemy to see Chelsea Berry and drop off a toy for the Pathways Toy Drive.

Finish up the night at with Fly Amero and his 80s rock star guest Jon Butcher at the Rhumb Line.  Whew!

Then be sure to get plenty of rest so you can start all over tomorrow at Men’s Night.

Gloucester legend Fly Amero has been hosting Wednesday’s at the Rhumb Line for some time now — and his guests range from more Gloucester legends to people you can’t see every day.  But tomorrow, he’s outdone himself by bringing Grammy-nominated 80s rock star, Jon Butcher as his guest.  Remember this MTV video from 1984?

New Local Music Seen show premieres tonight

Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, kicks off a new fall season tonight featuring the man who taught Fly Amero to finger pick, Chick Marston, with his partner Ellen Ford. Chick & Ellen’s chemistry is infectious; their harmonies gorgeous. Songs transcend genre with powerful storytelling and melodies that stay in your head all day long. And if that’s not enough, they’re joined by Laurie & Jay Keefe. What a show!  Catch it on Cape Ann TV Cable Channel 12 tonight at  6:30pm, Friday at 1:30pm or Sunday at 6pm.

Speaking of Fly Amero, after you’ve seen Allen’s show tonight, get on down to the Rhumb Line at 8pm to see Fly with his special guest Elaine O’Rourke and see if she can get Fly into a yoga position like this one.

Double dose of Orville this week

Orville Giddings – always smiling Who’s in the background? You’ve seen him on Treme & with others on Cape Ann

Our favorite smilin’ blues man Orville Giddings is a favorite guest at the Rhumb Line this week.  Tomorrow (Thursday) he’s Dave Sag’s guest and Sunday he’s with Allen Estes.  Orville is great solo, with others and with his full band, who you can see the day before Thanksgiving at the Stone Soup in Ipswich.

Back in April we featured Orville on gimmesound.com, with videos of him performing solo, with Allen Estes and with his band.  See those featured videos here.

But don’t wait for tomorrow.  Tonight is the night of great Gloucester guest musicians.  Brian King, Fly Amero, Steve Caraway and Dennis Monagle are all hosting excellent guests.  See the full lineup here.

Rhumb Line guest host, new blood & lots of new videos

Allen Estes will be sitting in for Fly Amero tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Rhumb Line where he’ll introduce Maine singer/songwriter Barry Michaud to Gloucester.

We’re beginning to get caught up publishing new videos on gimmesound (we’ve still got a lot to go) and today we added several new Allen Estes videos (click here).  Below is one of his new songs about Good Harbor Beach that was recorded on Local Music Seen:

Music connections revolving around Gloucester

Allen Estes‘ Cable TV show Local Music Seen features Brian King tonight at 6:30pm.  On the show, Brian sings his hit Cold Rain, which was recorded by Irma Thomas, the “Soul Queen of New Orleans” (listen here).   You can see Brian at Giuseppe’s tonight.

Irma Thomas appears in the HBO TV hit Treme (season 3 premieres this Sunday night).  And in the Treme video below, you can see Irma Thomas with Amadee Castenell in the blue suit on sax right next to her (that’s Dave Bartholomew, who lived down the street from Henri Smith, on trumpet next to Amadee)

Amadee performs with Henri Smith here in Gloucester and was in Henri’s band when he opened for Aaron Neville on June 30 at North Shore Music Theatre (see him in the photo below, on the right next to Danny Heath on Trombone)

Before he went on stage that night, Aaron Neville had been reviewing mixes from his upcoming album, My True Story with his wife, Sarah, who directed the video, below, that was released exactly 1 week ago today:

Veteran blues man, Bill Gleason is Fly’s guest tonight at the Rhumb Line.  He’s also one of the featured performers at the Lanesville Music Festival on Saturday followed by KBMG with Fly’s brother J.B. as a special guest.

And Pete Lindberg, who plays drums on Marina Evans‘ new EP (listen here) is performing his own songs at the Lanesville Music Festival at 5:30 (see festival schedule here)

Taking some of Gloucester’s best music to Iowa on a cloud ~ and a prediction for 2020

We may be somewhat old-fashioned, but we still listen to CDs for 3 major reasons:

  1. We prefer the superior sound quality
  2. We have a lot of them that we bought before MP3s were available
  3. The only iPod in our house belongs to John (I can’t stand putting anything in my ear!)

But when Vickie had to jump on a plane to Iowa suddenly last Saturday to deal with a family emergency, she felt the need to bring a taste of Gloucester with her.  So she ripped our copy of Chelsea Berry‘s CD Live in the Moment (one of Vickie’s favorites) and put it in our cloud (the Amazon cloud, that is) so she could listen to it on the plane and while in Iowa — along with lots of other music from Gloucester (see list below) and elsewhere that is already stored there.

Although we’re fans of the Joey Approved Product series, those of you who read our posts regularly know that we’ve never even mentioned a product or service that we use — until now.  This is different.  Why?  Because the cloud is changing the way we buy, store and listen to our music more than any other technology since Edison invented the phonograph.

Here’s why we like the Amazon Cloud Service:

  1. We can access our music using devices we already own, including our desktop PCs, laptop, droid phones and John’s Kindle Fire.
  2. It’s free.  Amazon has a free cloud player for the phone and a free interface for the PC.  There is a a limit to the amount of music you can store for free, but we haven’t hit that limit (remember, we still listen to CDs a lot) and music we buy from Amazon (mostly for John) doesn’t count toward that limit.
  3. All music we buy from Amazon automatically shows up in the cloud and is IMMEDIATELY accessible on all of our devices.  Here’s an example.  John and I are big Bruce Springsteen fans — and Vickie knows that.  On the day Wrecking Ball came out, she was sitting on the couch with John’s Kindle fire and said, “I just got it.” (Wrecking Ball, that is) at which point, I plugged my phone into the stereo (because I don’t put anything in my ear) and began playing it!
  4. All of us in the family can play all of the music at any time without restriction.  For example, while Vickie’s in Iowa, she can play Chelsea’s I Wonder on her phone or her mother’s computer while John plays the same song on his Kindle Fire and I play that same song on my phone hooked up to the stereo (because I don’t put anything in my ear) — all at the same time.
  5. It’s easy to rip our CDs and add them to the cloud (it took Vickie only a couple of minutes to add Chelsea’s CD to our cloud before we took her to the airport).

Some of you may know that I’ve made a number of predictions that have come to pass relative to the Internet, music, etc.  (for example, in 1998 I predicted that by 2003 every business will either have a website or wish they did).  Here’s another one: By 2020, the most common way to listen to recorded music will be to access it from a cloud server.

Weekend starts now ~ Don’t be fooled

And what a weekend it is!  First, there’s the Harbor Loop Concert Series Finale TONIGHT.  You simply cannot miss this extraordinary gathering of some of Gloucester’s best talent.

Tomorrow “our boy” (as Joey would say) Allen Estes interrupts his vacation to open for “our boy” Fly Amero and his touring band ORLEANS at North Shore Music Theatre.   Now, don’t be fooled.  Just because you can’t get a VIP seat (they’re sold out) doesn’t mean you can’t get a great seat! Here’s a trick to using their ticketing website:
1) Choose “Best Available” where it says “Select Price Level”
2) Put the number of seats you want in the line that says Regular under Ticket Type (see example, below).

Remember, all seats at North Shore Music Theatre are good seats — even the BACK ROW! This picture of Chris Isaak on June 28th was taken on Vickie’s phone from BEHIND the last row! Get your tickets now and LET THERE BE MUSIC!

Then on Saturday, it’s a FREE concert at the Boulevard featuring FULL CIRCLE from 7-11pm with breaks for the Boat Parade of Lights and Fireworks.

And Sunday Morning, you’ll want to sleep late in order to recover from all this fun, but you’ll be happier if you get yourself out of bed for the Parade of Sail led by the Lannon.
