Thank you a million times for meeting us at the foot bridge, you really went the extra mile for us. Joe was especially grateful to you for the dining recommendation for Azorean – fantastic, superb, delisiozo! We went to Cranes Beach to walk off the meal so I could get my fried clam fix, later, at the Clam Box. I hadn’t been to Cranes Beach in many decades. What a surprise! Biggest, most vivid rainbow I have ever seen, right there at Cranes Beach. We felt super natural vibes ! What a great day!
When my niece Vicki gets over her shock of seeing the magnificent photo you took, she will email or probably call me and I will share, you know she will be a very happy gal.

Who Brought the Magic for a great cause?
I don’t think that there are many individual YMCA or towns that could pull this fundraiser off so well. They don’t have Rick Doucette and the rest of the great staff in Gloucester or such a ridiculous abundance of local foodie establishments and culture. Here’s a list of Gloucester, Cape Ann and North Shore great eats and drinks establishments that participated this year:
Dazzling fine food, desserts and drinks were at every turn. Feather & Wedge, 1606 Restaurant, Mile Marker One, Classic Cooks, Azorean, Sea Glass Restaurant, and Sugar Mags served winning main dishes. To die for desserts and specialty drinks were abundant. Virgilios cannolis were gone fast!

The Bragas’s highly anticipated second stand alone restaurant, the new Italiano Restaurant and Bar, will be opening at 64 Main Street well before people flock to our coast this summer. The former space of La Trattoria is being transformed by RS Construction which also built the Dunkin Donuts in Magnolia and the Azorean’s gorgeous bar expansion and function addition. The new restaurant has been under major construction for months because the build out is much more than a revamp. The small kitchen is GONE. The entire former function space in the back is a brand spanking new kitchen.
In a city of incredibly good eats how do you make yours stand out?
An excellent reputation helps: the Bragas opened Azorean in 2007 which quickly established a legion of loyal customers with its unique and exceptional cuisine. Anita’s son David served in the Marine Corps and was killed in action on August 1, 2005. She and her husband, Greg, help returning veterans. They spoke about her son and some of the projects they’ve supported. Good Morning Gloucester readers may remember Anita’s joy in finding a Paul Frontiero “Art, Rocks!”, and donating a flag to the Boulevard. Anita’s mom was born in Gloucester in 1917; her Uncle was dear friends with Pauline Bresnahan’s father.
Adam Curcuru and the veterans office volunteers discussed projects that the Cape Ann Veterans Services is involved with. Stories were shared and a few tears. It was all very inspiring. We passed around a copy of the children’s book that is going to all the elementary school classes for Veterans Day. We spent time admiring the Welcome Home to Cape Ann Veterans Gift Packages, a program “designed to show Cape Ann’s appreciation for our returning veterans and let them know that Cape Ann supports them in this process of transitioning out of the military and back into our community.”
With or without the Gloucester family connections, I believe that Anita and Greg are so impressed by the Cape Ann Veterans Services that they would be delighted to work together anyhow. How nice that Cape Ann Veterans Services is included.
I learned that the 2016 Welcome Home to Cape Ann Veterans we left the light on for you Gift Packages were made possible by the Cape Ann Veterans Services, Gloucester MA Elks Lodge #892, and the Manchester Athletic Club, and that they are made extra homey special because they are stuffed with support information and gift certificates from so many local donors, businesses and organizations:
Manuel and Maria DaSilva, made a promise “uma promessa” for the innocence of children. They passed out sweet bread to all the parents with children under a certain age, after mass at Our Lady of Good Voyage.
The Portuguese Promise “Promessa”, is a tradition, I recall my mother making many, sometimes without any explanation, it was usually an act of charity.

The History of the Holy Ghost Feast The original Holy Ghost Feast was held during the reign of Elizabeth (Isabel) of Portugal, who lived from 1271 to 1336. She was known as a peacemaker and as “The Holy Queen” who was devoted to the Holy Spirit. She built a church dedicated to the name of the Holy Spirit in Lisbon and often demonstrated her devotion to her people and their well-being. There are many stories of the Queen’s piety and service, but the dearest to the Portuguese people of the Azores is the one explaining their devotion to Queen Elizabeth and the Holy Ghost. In the 13th century, the Azores Islands suffered from many violent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The most seriously hit was the Island of Pico. The people of these Azores Islands could not survive the drought, crop failures, and famine that now plagued them. They gathered together in prayer to the Holy Ghost for help. On the morning of Pentecost Sunday, there was a great rising sun, and the people of these islands saw in the sunrise a ship coming into the Port of Fayal. This ship was laden with necessities of life. The food was distributed among the people of the various islands, and they were very grateful that their prayers had been answered. When their Queen heard of this providence, she organized a solemn procession in honor of the Holy Ghost. Accompanied by her maids she carried her Crown through the streets of Lisbon to the cathedral, where she left it on the altar as an offering of thanksgiving for the favors the Holy Ghost had given her people. In addition, she began a tradition of feeding the poor at Pentecost. Each year she chose twelve people to whom she gave a new suit of clothing and personally served them a meal at her table. The people of the Azores vowed that they and their children and their children’s children would commemorate the day by giving thanks to their Queen for the sacrifice she made. Since then, many Portuguese churches have displayed replicas of her eight-sided crown in remembrance of her goodness and God’s grace. Later, in the 16th century, the church canonized this holy queen in recognition of the miracles that were attributed to her pious life
