Video Interview With June 2013 Goetemann Artist in Residence : Allison Hornak
Allison Hornak speaks about her Goeteman Residency On Rocky Neck. Check out her website to learn more about her work and her vision
Painting and building are my practice. I have devotion toward material, and I am as devoted to aerosol paints as I am to mud. All material is flesh and connotes promiscuously within society and nature. Then there is the problem of the impulse to order. As an artist I need to still stuff. Each piece acts as a halt—a submission, as a person, to the need to resist chaos. What chaos? Every artwork, every mark: a deceleration. Every one a breaking. Since, still, at the end of the day, at a turn, rupture is in the lull. This is my protest. I (am) matter too.

About The Goetemann Artists in Residency Program from The Rocky Neck Art Colony website:
This is the 8th year of the Goetemann Residency Program. The quality of the applications submitted continues to rise and there has been an increase in our geographical range. Applicants have come not only from the Boston area, state of MA and New England, but now there are many more national and international candidates. Choosing only 3 from this list caused us to examine more carefully candidates who best serve the colony’s interest in diversity of stylistic orientation, career level, and understanding of the mission and objectives of our community of Rocky Neck.
The art of Leon Doucette
This distinguished, brooding portrait almost seems to depict some Spanish caballero of the type painted by Velázquez or El Greco. However, I met a cheerier version of this same face on Wednesday at the Cape Ann Museum. It belongs to Leon Doucette, who was our docent for the regular 11AM guided tour. He grew up in Gloucester, moved away for a few years (including college), and then moved back recently and started working at the Cape Ann Museum. His local knowledge and love of art was evident in the tour he gave us.
Besides being a really nice person, he is a very talented painter. When he said he is an artist, I looked him up right away on my iPhone and found his blog. My first thought when I saw his painting was, “why is this guy not 24/7 behind an easel?” I guess it’s hard for an artist – especially a young man who is relatively new on the scene – to get enough work painting to do that full-time. At least he has a job in an art museum! But honestly, his work is really good, worth checking out. Here’s another image from his website:

Great, isn’t it? There is a lot more on his blog.
Sadly, he doesn’t have any work on display right now in Gloucester. I am going to follow his blog in the hopes he announces a local show sometime soon.
I wonder how many other talented young artists like Leon are hidden in our midst… They are the future of the art community here on Cape Ann. I hope they get the support and recognition they deserve.
Fortunately, we have initiatives like the The Cape Ann Painter and Photographer Group, which meets the second Monday of each month from 9:00 to 10:30 at the Annie. In general, from what I’ve seen, the Cape Ann art community is very welcoming and encouraging for artists who are new to the area.

Hey Joey: Great to see you and Frank yesterday and thanks for some great lobsters which we at last night. Joanne wanted me to forward you the website address of our good friend and excellent artist Rob Dieboll. Rob and his wife Kim actually turned us onto Captain Joe’s in 2007 when we bought our place in Rockport. We have several of Rob’s prints and a couple of his originals on our walls here. He is noted for his paintings of Good Harbor beach people and they all evoke a story in the beholder’s imagination. Check the site out at www.diebboll.com.
Joanne’s gonna make me winner winner chicken dinner next week (hopefully). Sometime I want you and the Mrs. to come over for my favorite soup in the world that Joanne makes in the winter time: Portugese bean soup with oxtails. It’s an old family recipe that emanated in Honolulu and will knock your socks off.
Thanks again Joey for being your personable self!
Best regards, Ben
