Jon was a former Vice President of Paramount Pictures and shared a special bond with Andy Warhol, becoming Andy’s closest friend and companion in the 1980’s.

Return of the Magnificent 7: Healy halts Sotheby’s from selling Berkshire Museum art
For now, PASS!
On Friday November 10, 2017, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy responded to Judge Agostini’s November 7th decision greenlighting Sotheby’s sale. The Massaschusetts AGO appeal reversed the decision, ultimately procuring an injunction from Judge Trainor, Massachusetts Appeals Court. This 11th hour move will not be the last word on the case, though it scuttles any scheduled sale prior to December 11 (with allowances for extensions to build the case.)
Meanwhile, on Monday, November 13, 2017, collectors can purchase Martin Johnson Heade’s Crimson Topaz Hummingbirds and 76 major American paintings at Sotheby’s. The Sotheby’s sale originally featured 84 lots. Norman Rockwell’s Shuffleton’s Barbershop, and 6 more of the Berkshire Museum 40, will not be sold, yet.

Who Brought the Magic for a great cause?
I don’t think that there are many individual YMCA or towns that could pull this fundraiser off so well. They don’t have Rick Doucette and the rest of the great staff in Gloucester or such a ridiculous abundance of local foodie establishments and culture. The Annisquam Sewing Circle was begun in 1837 as the Annisquam Female Benevolent Society. It is thought to be the oldest continuous independent society of women on Cape Ann.
The Society’s purpose as stated in its Preamble, was “for the performance of acts of benevolence.” Through the years, the Society, and now the Circle, has contributed generously to community programs and to individuals.

On November 2 2017 David Brooks and Jason Burroughs re-installed the Action Inc public art mural, Harbor and Home, which was newly repainted by Burroughs.
Cole Herbst was the original artist of the Home and Harbor mural, installed in 2010. Herbst used spray paint, acrylics and markers. Fellow artists Jake Stafford and Giacomo Vorhees helped Herbst with the project, and Jason Burroughs was involved a bit, too. Burroughs and Herbst were students together in the Compass youth program, Action Inc. Burroughs and Herbst have been in contact about the condition of Harbor and Home and settled on the current solution. Herbst is living overseas and is pleased Burroughs revived the mural and its new iteration.

Rare Edward Hopper print The Lonely House fetched record auction price @SwannGalleries
The Edward Hopper etching The Lonely House was the star lot going into the sale and in the live auction last night. The print sold for $310,000 vaulting past its pre auction estimate of $150,000-$200,000.
Hopper’s Les Poilus circa 1915 surpassed its $15000-$20,000 pre-sale estimate as well, selling for $42,500. I’ve sold an impression of the Lonely House before but I’ve only scene Les Poilus in the Whitney collection.
The sale featured Old Master through Modern prints by American and European artists.

Virginia Lee Burton, children’s book author/illustrator, Folly Cove textile designer and founder, resided and worked in Gloucester, MA, where she created some of America’s most popular and classic children’s picture books. Burton’s characters and stories have been enjoyed by children of all ages all over the world. She received the Caldecott medal in 1943 for The Little House. Other books include Katy and the Big Snow and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.

Emergency Motion! Berkshire Museum dramatic courtroom hearing
On Wednesday, November 1, 2017, there was a hearing in Berkshire Superior Court concerning efforts to block the upcoming Sotheby’s sale of Berkshire Museum art. Judge John Agostini presided over the hearing. Apparently the plaintiff cases were not enough; the Attorney General’s office filed an emergency motion DURING yesterday’s two hour hearing. There was a large audience. More than one observer felt that the courtroom scene looked like a Norman Rockwell painting. Judge Agostini said he will make his decision soon.
Here’s the conclusion from The Berkshire Eagle article by Larry Parnass (they’ll be getting awards for their coverage):
Trustees acted unreasonably, she said, by treating the art collection as “fungible.”
The term refers to a commodity that can be traded for something else, such as cash.
Instead, Aladro said, the board turned away from its “core legacy” as a museum and took steps that will sever its connection to cultural institutions it needs to hold future exhibitions. “You ask what the museum did wrong,” Keating said to the judge. “They violated their own written policies.” Briefs filed in the case show that trustees voted to sign a contract with Sotheby’s weeks before removing provisions from policies that prohibited selling art in the way it intends. Keating also accused trustees of secrecy. “They knew there would be pushback. They didn’t want to face this.” He pointed to an email sent last May by the trustees president, Elizabeth McGraw, that asked fellow trustees to keep quiet. The subject line of the email read, “Loose lips sink ships.” “They didn’t want this ship sunk,” Keating said.

Tab Hunter & Allan Glaser approachable and inspiring at Gloucester Cape Ann Cinema & Stage
Find a screening of the Jeffrey Schwarz documentary, “Tab Hunter Confidential”; it’s fantastic!
“How long did it take to make?” was the first question at Gloucester’s Cape Ann Cinema talk back, following the must-see, indeliable and candid documentary: Tab Hunter Confidential. Six years and a life well lived along with a kick in the pants. Word of an unauthorized biography was motivating enough to tell Tab Hunter’s story “straight from the horse’s mouth, rather than straight from a horse’s ***.”
Tab Hunter is an American movie star, singer and author. The documentary is a gift that leaves the viewer wishing both Hunter and Allan Glaser were your friends, and that Hunter had starred in even more movies. There’s something for everybody to relate or aspire to: success, disappointment, betrayal, love, gratitude, humor, hard work, spirit and character. Hunter and Glasser traveled from California to Gloucester for this special screening because of Cape Ann Cinema. They shared easily and kindly as if everyone there was at a private screening and already acquainted. They’re staying downtown. They visited the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum. (Do they know she came here? Did they go to Beauport Museum? Will they come back?) They were smart, charming and personable. Present. Real. Decidely NOT full of themselves. Hunter, along with Natalie Wood and James Dean, were the last three Hollywood stars to be signed under contract in the studio system. Beyond acting, Hunter was also a chart topping singer and competitive athelete in not one but 3 sports, a devoted son and awe struck brother. A new Hollywood biopic is in discussions. (I thought which Director might be inspired- lots of Todd Haynes moments.) The theater audience was comprised of Tab Hunter fans including super ones who drove in from Lowell. There were a couple who did not know about Tab Hunter or his other accomplishments. We’re all super fans now. The programming at this little art house cinema can break your heart.
