Sunday Gloucester Waterfront Festival Drawing Winner Picked at The GMG Tent

If you entered the free contest watch the video to see if it was you who won!

Also bonus points for anyone who can pick out the snots that I wiped on my shirt prior to filming this piece.  Question- What’s worse watching a video with a guy with snots running down his face or watching a video with snots on his shirt that he wiped from his upper lip before filming said video?

The Contest was sponsored by www.gimmesound.com Sista felicia and The Mrs Mason Jar Co

Bolognese Sauce

By Times StaffGloucester Daily Times

There are many variations for what is known as Bolognese sauce, and every Italian American home usually has its own.

Felicia Ciaramitaro Mohan’s version is typical. In her home, as in most other Italian American homes that take their Italian food seriously, it is a staple sauce, especially for the traditional Sunday dinners.

Felicia says that the best way to think of this sauce is as “a meat sauce, it is thick and not juicy.” There are two types of meat — ground hamburger and ground veal — but relatively little tomato sauce.

“I use it as the stuffing along with some peas for my arancini,” she says. “It is almost always served on pasta for Sunday dinner as well.”

Art Now Rockport Comin’ At Ya August 18th The Deets From Sarah Kelly

We were going for a whole Joker from batman look with the shadows across her face (my fault not hers).

Seriously this is the coolest idea involving art I’ve ever heard of.  This could blow up and be absolutely HUGE and one day we will be looking back and say, yep it was that brilliant Sarah Kelly who kicked off this huge Art Revolution.

Musical chairs, open mics, special guests, family co-hosts, sing-a-long, smooth jazz scat … and more tonight

You’re gonna have to choose because they’re all going on at the same time.  See the detailed live music line up here.  If you go see Fly with his sister Linda & special guest Jack Senier on piano at the Rhumb Line tonight, you might want to see if Fly will play Mall Cop.  No reason.  Just cuz.

And don’t forget the premiere of Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tonight at 6:30pm, with guest John Rockwell and the TV premiere of Allen’s new song, which you can name if you like — see yesterday’s post about that here.

Name that tune – for our friend Allen Estes

Well, Allen’s done it yet again — another new song.  This one’s perfect for summer and could well be on its way to becoming a summer anthem for Gloucester and Cape Ann.

As Allen says in this clip, he doesn’t yet have a name of this song.  If you feel like suggesting one, just leave a comment and we may mention your name on a future Local Music Seen regardless of what Allen finally decides to call the song.

This was recorded yesterday for a brand-new Local Music Seen show that will premiere tomorrow (Wednesday, 8/15) on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 at 6:30pm.  John Rockwell is Allen’s guest. Two excellent voices singing wonderful harmonies and reveling in Cape Ann’s burgeoning music scene.  So watch the show and then run down to Alchemy to see John Rockwell live at 7.

And don’t forget about all the music available tonight.  See the full live music lineup here.

Baccala recipes from Sefatia Romeo and Mark McDonough at yesterday’s Harbor Walk Ribbon Cutting

Right after the ribbon cutting and before Mayor Kirk led us on the walk, I had a chance to try the salt cod, a.k.a. baccala, get a preview of the dish that is available at Latitude 43 (while supplies last) and a lesson on how to prepare baccala from Sefatia.  Enjoy!

If you listen carefully you can hear Bob Ryan (of CATA) in the background while Sefatia is talking — explaining the origin of the word “Stage” in “Stage Fort Park”.  Leave us a comment if you know why it’s called “Stage Fort Park”.

In the video, Sefatia references a cooking show she taped with Sista Felicia.  See that show in the three videos below

Bruce Tarr reveals the secret of successful ribbon cutting

I just got back from the Harbor Walk ribbon Cutting and inaugural walk led by Mayor Kirk with lots of great video.  Here’s a little gem in which Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr reveals the secret of successful ribbon cutting to the crowd on hand.  Lt. Gov. Tim Murray at center and Mayor Carolyn Kirk with the big scissors.

More Harbor Walk video in the days to come  . . .

What’s really going on with this Harbor Walk anyhow?

Honoring our past while embracing our future — through stories.  Most of us think we know the past.  Old stories.  History classes.  But if we really want to honor our past, we must feel it, not just memorize it.

The Harbor Walk helps us feel by getting us to participate in the experience of bringing the past to life using bleeding-edge technology.  Watch this “Walking Cinema” video (designed to be played on your smart-phone while you walk) for just one example of why today’s Times Editorial says, “Through the new HarborWalk, the city has taken story-telling to an entirely new level …”

Ann Marie, of the Bandit Kings  (certainly part of Gloucester’s promising future) literally walks us into the past through old postcards woven with imaginative narration over current video of Gloucester Harbor so we can feel Howard Blackburn’s journey.

Why should we honor the past?  There are more reasons than you’d want to read in this post, so I’ll keep it to one:  It’s us.  It’s where we’ve come from.  The past touches the core of our being.  Honoring the past honors ourselves, which is necessarily the first step in helping anyone else, or trying to make the world a better place.

Why should we embrace the future?  (You can see this coming, right?)  It’s where we’re going — whether we like it or not.  It’s our destiny.

The Harbor Walk doesn’t just embrace the future with new technologies and gadgets.  It also does it through native flower gardens that bloom spectacularly — right now, this fall, next year and every year; and through state-of-the-art recycled materials and lighting mixed with ancient granite posts.

Most of all, the Harbor Walk embraces our future by bringing people to the waterfront — Old, young and yet to be born.  People will feel our past through these stories that fill us with the essence of Gloucester so each one of us can embrace our future grounded in our Gloucesterness and prepared for what ever comes our way.

You can experience the Harbor Walk starting tomorrow at 1pm with the ribbon cutting.  And you can continue the experience all weekend long.  See tomorrow’s Harbor Walk schedule here — and you can download the  full weekend Harbor Walk schedule here.

These schedules highlight a few official Harbor Walk activities, plus dozens of others (under the heading Step Out into Gloucester) that were going on anyhow and are proof that  Gloucester’s rich cultural heritage is alive today and will be carried into the future.

You can  help that process along by participating.  See you there .  . .

http://www.capeanninfo.com/ Still hot? Take your dog and your chair down behind Gloucester High School for a "secret swim".

Joey may wanna kill me, but . . .

I have to say that, certainly from musical perspective, today’s Festival By The Sea in Manchester is the place to be.  [just a little back-peddling, here] Now that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go to the Sidewalk Bazaar in the morning.  And if you’ve taken my advice (given here) you went on Thursday too.  But I gotta hand it to Festival By The Sea Music Director Chris Langathianos.  He put together a DYNAMITE LINEUP headlined by one of my favorite artists: Chelsea Berry with her HOT new band!  Just in case you missed them at North Shore Music Theatre, watch the video below and then tell me you’d rather be anywhere other than Masconomo Park at 6 tonight — REALLY?

And for later tonight you’ve got another 15 artists and Cape Ann venues to choose from.  WOW! See the full live music lineup here.

Where will you be next Thursday (8/9) at 1pm?

St. Peter’s Square would be the right answer … so you can join Mayor Kirk, the Lt. Governor for the Harbor Walk Ribbon Cutting and a special walk led by the Mayor.

This isn’t your usual boring ribbon cutting event, folks.  It’s the kick off to an extraordinary weekend, culminating in Gloucester’s first Blues Festival and highlighting everything Gloucester has to offer from our proud fishing heritage and continuous working waterfront to art, music, food, literature, heroism and the spectacular natural beauty that inspires every one of us.

Much of this is embodied in the Story Moments on granite posts along the harbor walk, supported by an excellent website and phone apps built by Mike Ciolino (see notice of the website launch here).

And that website features a WALKING CINEMA starring one of Gloucester’s best singers: Ann Marie of the Bandit Kings, Safety (and who backed up Chelsea Berry at North Shore Music Theatre on June 28).

See Ann Marie in the Walking Cinema intro below:

I can’t even begin to list all the music THIS WEEKEND — it’s going on RIGHT NOW at the Sitewalk Bazaar.  Just check out the full live music schedule here.

BREAKING NEWS: Fly Amero’s touring band, Orleans, welcomes co-founder/songwriter/guitarist John Hall for a 40th Anniversary Concert in honor of Larry Hoppen at NORTH SHORE MUSIC THEATRE ON AUGUST 31

You saw it on GMG FIRST.  Just like you heard about the sudden, tragic death of Fly’s longtime friend and band-mate Larry Hoppen last week (see post here).

The next day, Fly demonstrated the healing power of music (see that story here) and on August 31, the healing continues as the show goes on (see details here).

All of us who know Fly are celebrating the band’s commitment to music in honor of their friend and brother by inviting John Hall, who wrote the multi-platinum #1 hits Dance With Me and Still the One to join them for this very special 40th anniversary concert (get tickets here).  Here’s a video of John making a special appearance with the band last year.

Now I hope you’re reading this on your phone because that means you’ve taken the day off and are out at the Sidewalk Bazaar and planning to visit the Farmers Market and take in some music this evening.  See today’s AMAZING live music lineup here.

(There may even be tickets left to see Fly and Allen Estes on The Lannon at 6:30 — and, finally, the weather looks good.  Call 978-281-6634 to find out).

Sneak Peak at Tonight’s Local Music Seen with Allen Estes

Tune into Cape Ann TV Channel 12 tonight at 6:30 to see three generations of Estes Boys. Here’s a short clip from the show that Lisa Smith just sent over.
