You Be the Judge!

Filmgoers in Rockport, Massachusetts, will unite with audiences in over 300 cities spanning six continents to view and judge the work of the next generation of filmmakers from around the world when the 15th Annual MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival screens at The Shalin Liu Performance Center Sun Sept 30 at 3:00pm & 7:00pm and the following Friday Oct 5th at 8:00pm. Out of 520 entries received from 49 countries around the world, MANHATTAN SHORT selected ten short films as finalists. Each film is 18 minutes or under in length. Countries represented this year include Norway, The Netherlands, Russia, England, Ireland, Peru, France, Romania, Spain and the USA, in what festival organizers describe as the “United Nations of Film Festivals.”

These short films will not only entertain a global audience, but will be judged by them as well. Filmgoers will be handed a voting card upon entry and asked to vote for the one film they feel should win. Votes are tallied at each participating cinema and submitted to festival headquarters where the winner will be announced in New York City, as well as posted on the net at http://www.ManhattanShort.com on Sunday, October 7th, at 10:00 PM.

With past finalists achieving the ultimate in recognition by being nominated and even winning the Oscar in the short film category, the Manhattan Short has become known as a breeding ground for the next big thing.

In one week, over 100,000 people from as far north as St. Petersburg, Russia, to as far south as Buenos Aires, Argentina, as far east as Kathmandu, Nepal, and as far west as Perth, Australia, to over 150 cinemas in 47 US States will come together to view and vote on these 10 films. “While the goal of any festival is to discover and promote new talent, the real aim of this festival is bringing communities together via stories from around the world,” says Nicholas Mason, MANHATTAN SHORT founder and director.

“Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that what started as a small, relatively simple event when I projected a handful of short films onto the side of a truck on a downtown Manhattan street 15 years ago, would grow into what it is today, with communities all over the world getting together to celebrate via ten short films…it’s become like Earth Day—but with film,” adds Mason.

Painter Viktor Valasek is a native of Czechoslovakia and has a Master’s Degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He studied at Cooper Union in NYC in 2009 and his work from that time was included in an Exchange Students Exhibition. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions including at Trafo Gallery and AVU gallery both in Prague. He is currently a resident artist at Meetfactory, a center of contemporary art in Prague.

Artist Statement: Even though I have been recently working on a body of work that is more abstract, most of my work is figurative. I am trying to comment and depict my own surrounding, including cultural stereotypes and memories from my own nation’s collective consciousness. It is a view which is only possible after a person leaves his own culture and looks back from the ‘other’ location. At once, one feels trapped within his or her own stereotype. This is who I am. This is who I am expected to be. We are expected to conform to the view imposed by ‘them’ on ‘us’. I am balancing on the edge between doing a good show – as ‘expected’ and self-reflection. The ‘folklore’ otherness of Central European post communist contemporary art is the product which is delivered to the spectator, yet it comes with a self-critical edge. Is it myself, or is it the image of myself, as defined by others? The most recent abstract paintings are different not only in the attitude but also in the whole visual impact on the viewer. By covering the space of the painting with a symbol of thinking, I am also stepping out of the previous stereotypes. viktorvalasek.com/

Note to artists from Viktor

For my project here, in Gloucester, I need old canvases, nothing very valuable, rather something damaged or something that noone needs or wants anymore. It is not important what is in the painting or how old it is, as long as it is about to be thrown away. Instead of creating brand new paintings I will try to investigate possibilities of the "recycling idea" in art, painting in particular. By removing and adding layers of paint, I will, in fact, make my own paintings but on top of someone else’s work.

Devils Island was filmed two years ago on Thacher Island by amateur filmmaker and Gloucester High School history teacher Shaun Goulart. He appears in the film, along with other Cape Ann people you might know, like Rick Doucette of the Gloucester YMCA and the late Mitch Cohen, a local therapist who died two months after his scenes were filmed. The film also features a cameo by Thacher keeper John Fulton and many scenes of the island itself.

Last week we told you about Marina Evans‘ new release (see post here).  Well she’s got another one this week, next week and the week after (check this link for new songs each week).  Plus she’s got a parallel project going on in Italy, which she plans to release in October.  And you can see her at the Block Party on Saturday  (full Block Party lineup coming soon).  Busy Woman!

I caught Marina last night just before her set at the Rhumb Line.  Here’s part 1 of that interview.  More fun video and a couple of surprises from Marina coming later this week.

But no need to wait for the Block Party.  There’s plenty going on all week.  Remember Rob Newton’s FALL INTO THE RHYTHM movie/music celebration at Cape Ann Community Cinema starts tomorrow with LA CENERENTOLA  and features The Cowsills on Thursday (more about that here).

Remember the Cowsills?  This is the tremendously talented family whose quick rise to stardom in the 1960s became the inspiration for the Partridge Family TV Show.  But there was a dark side — and they fell quickly into obscurity.

On Sunday you can hear Aurelia Nelson of North Shore 104.9 interview Bob Cowsill on her show Curtain Up at 9AM on 104.9FM.  Bob speaks candidly about their life in the early days of rock n’ roll.

Then on Thursday, you can experience it all at Cape Ann Community Cinema with a screening of the new film Family Band: The Cowsills Story, plus a LIVE SET by surviving members of the band and a Q&A.  Seating is very limited so get your tickets now.

Who’s the new face of Jazz, Pop, Folk & World concerts at Shalin Liu?  It used to be Livingston Taylor.  Now it’s “our girl” (as Joey would say) Chelsea Berry!  Check out the link and see what I mean.  CONGRATULATIONS CHELSEA!

Tough Coffeehouse Choice Tomorrow.  Do you go to see Allen Estes at One World Coffeehouse or Chelsea Berry at Old Sloop Coffeehouse.  Both will be great shows!

It gets worse:  Chelsea and Allen are competing with Judy Collins at Shalin Liu and the Noise 31st Anniversary Fete at the Dog Bar.  Judy Collins is playing on Sunday too, but you have to call for ticket availability for both shows.

We see a trend and we like it: competition & collaboration bolster performance

Talented local artists, who started out solo, are beginning to record with bands.  Here are two recent examples:

Marina Evans just released a new EP with her Glosta band featuring one of her best songs (buy it here).  Listen here:

You can see Marina tonight at the Dog Bar with the great Dave Brown.

And Chelsea Berry, who ROCKED North Shore Music Theatre on June 28  (see video below) is about to record with her new band.  She’s doing what all smart, talented independent artists do — raising money herself on KickStarter, where people donate to the project and get something when it’s done.  We donated because we can’t wait to hear her new album.  You can donate too by going here.  See Chelsea with Anna Dagmar at the Old Sloop Coffeehouse in Rockport on Saturday.

Why do we like this trend?  Because sparks of genius ignite fires of creative collaboration and competition.  Don’t you think the Beatles were better as a group than any one of them individually?  You can probably name several other examples like this.  These two elements — competition and collaboration —  inspire most performers to be, at the same time, more disciplined and more dramatic, thereby enhancing the quality and entertainment value of their performances.

Finally, there’s the fact that we love the SOUND of ensemble music, whether it’s a string quartet, rock band, big horn section or full symphony.

As Brad Byrd explains in the video below (after his solo performance), “most every song can use a little something .. to give the listener a little ear candy … to make the song fully realized …”  Hear the fully realized version Zero to the 101 here.

Remember, it’s still summer and Rocky Neck Art Colony presents their final Nights on the Neck tonight with live music at seven locations from 5-9:30pm.  Plus there are six indoor venues with live music tonight as well.  See the full live music lineup here.

Here’s the thing about the guys that did this video.  They obviously had an agenda that they wanted to associate anything they could with Global warming.

Maybe Geno really felt this way but I’m not sure how you can extrapolate one year where we have an abnormally mild  winter and spring with a trend.  Because how would you explain winter before last when there was so much cold and snow we were running out of places to put it.  We don’t talk about the extreme colds I guess because that wouldn’t fit in with their piece.

 

Who’s the Serious Security Guy in this Blues Fest Video of the great Shemekia Copeland?

Here’s another video of Shemekia Copeland (Queen of the Blues) at the Gloucester Blues Festival with yet another powerful song that shows off her band as well as her remarkable voice (see yesterday’s post if you missed the song that gave me the chills).

Who’s that security guy walking in front of the stage at at about :30 seconds into the video?  He looks so serious! You wouldn’t wanna mess with him would ya?

Just in case you missed getting Shemekia’s excellent CDs signed at the Blues Fest, you can order one here and ask her to sign it next time you see her (see tour schedule).

It’s a testament to Gloucester’s stature as a music destination that we can attract major international recording artists, the caliber of Shemekia’s Copeland, for our very first Blues Festival.  Perhaps it’s because of the tremendously talented musicians who live here.

Don’t take them for granted.  Check Cape Ann’s live music schedule and go see them now.  Some day you may  have to drive an hour and pay a hundred bucks to see artists you can see this weekend right here on Cape Ann for free.

Just a Ghetto Child in Gloucester

Shemekia Copeland’s astounding performance was the climax of Gloucester’s Blues Festival 2 weeks ago.  We blogged all day from the festival, but never showed you any of Shemekia’s set — so here you go:  In this video, she walks the crowd singing without a mic, while the band plays from the stage.  Perfect mix; powerful music; gave me the chills.

We’ve had a busy month of festivals, here in Gloucester.  This weekend we’ve got 28 artists in 16 venues — two of which are schooners. And that’s just Friday & Saturday (see the Friday & Saturday live music lineup here).  You’d think it was another festival.  Nope.  Just more evidence of Cape Ann’s thriving music scene.

Start the weekend a little early with the epic Seafood Throwdown rematch today at 4pm at the Farmer’s Market at Stage Fort Park.  Then the Harbor Loop Concert — 12 live music choices in all.  See tonight’s live music lineup here.

HUGE REMATCH RESCHEDULED – Sugar Mags vs. Classic Cooks Tomorrow (Thursday) at 4pm

OK, you’ve waited patiently now for 4 weeks to see this epic rematch and tomorrow is the day — 4pm Stage Fort Park — weather looks great — and we have a special twist:  Thursday’s throwdown will help answer the question How does local seafood affect the health and diet of young people?  In addition to the pro judges (Lara Lepionka of Backyard Growers and Beacon Street Farm and Hallie Baker of Turtle Alley Chocolates) we’ll have 3 youth judges who will make sure the chefs’ creations are compatible with young people’s palates — a very tall order, indeed.  So bring your kids and get them to try the dishes too.
