Two Cable shows feature new music tomorrow (Wednesday)

Two excellent shows premiere tomorrow (Wednesday) on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  At 6:30pm, Allen Estes welcomes his family for a special, very lively Local Music Seen that’s sort of like a peek into the family living room.

Then at 7:30pm Blues Festival producers Bob Hastings and Paul Benjamin are Rick Sagall’s guest on Cape Ann Report — complete with footage of some of the stars of the festival.  See a preview of that very special show below.

Tonight you can see some of Cape Ann’s finest musicians for free and if you have tickets to  the sold out Ladysmith Black Mambazo concert at Shalin Liu, you’re in for a treat!  See the full live music lineup here.

Deb NY submits-

Wow. Some of the conversations on the blog have been a little testy of late. Strong opinions regarding coyotes and cats, the freedom of speech, ect. Nothing wrong with people sharing opinions but I thought you might post this just to simmer things down a bit. At the heart of it all, we all love nature and animals and being alive.

So, thanks Joe, for the blog and the great job you do connecting all of us in so many different ways.

The Hive Grand Opening July 28th Preview From Kenny MacCarthy

Kenny MacCarthy writes-

http://www.capeanninfo.com/ Want to take a pottery class? learn how to use PowerPoint? take a film class? That’s what Gloucester’s latest community space is all about.

How does Carlos do it all?

At 7pm Carlos Menezes (2nd from right on sax in the video below) leads Cape Ann Big Band at Shalin Liu (Call the box office 978-546-7391 to see if there are any tickets left).

Then at 9pm he’s at Cape Ann Brewery with The Runaround.  You’d think that he’d be exhausted after all that, but Carlos …?…  probably not.  He’ll have enough energy for a third gig starting at midnight, if you want to book him … 🙂

And he’s not the only performer doing two shows today.  Allen Estes will be in the courtyard at the Cape Ann Museum at 4pm and then at Heath’s Tea Room with Mike O’Connell at 7pm.

Because this is Gloucester, there are another dozen shows to choose from tonight.  See the full live music lineup here.

Beauty in Gloucester

I loved this Macy Gray song from the moment I first heard it. The lyrics are full of hope. I found the song  to be perfect for creating a montage of my favorite clips, filmed in and around Gloucester over the course of the past month. The footage is from works-in-progress butterfly films, 2012 Greasy Pole shorts, and random footage from a family picnic. Is it too kooky–butterflies and Greasy Pole Walkers–you tell me because I see beauty in everyone and everything.

Filmed at Niles Beach, Pavilion Beach, Good Harbor Beach, Eastern Point, Brace Cove, Gloucester Harbor Walk, and Plum Street. Created for Good Morning Gloucester. Dedicated to Joey and his beautiful family and to our beloved Gloucester community.

Thank you Ciaramitaros for your help with my Monarch film!

Thank you to my darling daughter Liv; as Craig said, “a trifecta–beautiful, smart, and funny!”

2012 Sunday Greasy Pole Walkers

“Beauty in the World” is by American singer Macy Gray from her album The Sellout, which is Gray’s fifth album and first since her under-performing 2007 album Big. The Selllout is her return to musical form after almost conforming when her last album didn’t take off. “I thought after Big flopped maybe I should do what everyone else was doing,” she said. “Go out and hire the hottest producers, the best writers, get real skinny. But none of those people called me back.”

The song was inspired by hearing her daughter’s laughter on a down day. “I didn’t even know what she was laughing at. I thought ‘at least she’s happy.’ And I felt at least I hadn’t failed there, because my daughter’s happy.” -wiki

Sugar Mags vs Classic Cooks HUGE REMATCH for the First Seafood Throwdown this Thursday ~ 4pm at the Farmers Market ~ Stage Fort Park

Last year Julie Geary claimed the title from four-time winner, previously undefeated Missy Hart of Sugar Magnolias in an extraordinarily close contest, full of mouthwatering anticipation and suspense.  See the video that Joey made of that throwdown here:

Below is a quick press release from Throwdown master organizer, Sandy Farrell.

Our “Hotter Than July!” rematch pits Missy Hart’s Team Sugar Magnolia with Lydia Sands and Santos Carvalho against Julie Geary’s Team from Classic Cooks. Watch closely as both of these teams bring years of experience to the table. Grant writer, organic farmer at Beacon Street Farm, and head of the Backyard Growers Program, Lara Lepionka will be judging the event with her critical eye. Steve Parkes, the “Fillet King” will lead a demonstration showing how to fillet a whole fish and break down the process so that you can feel confident in the kitchen. Join emcee Peter Van Ness of gimmesound.com this Thursday, July 26 at the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market. This is our second year at Stage Fort Park where the parking is always free on Market afternoons from 3pm on. The SeaFood Throwdown starts at 4pm.

Another judge or two will be announced soon.  Hope to see you there!

Video- West End Sweets From Kenny MacCarthy

http://www.capeanninfo.com/ Ice cream is one of my staples. I just had a NorEaster at West End Sweets, 37 Main St. Downtown Gloucester. I’m going back tonight for another one. http://www.westendsweets.com/

A dozen venues with Live Music Tonight ~ and 2 of them are floating!

Being a waterfront community, you’d expect Cape Ann to have plenty of restaurants, pubs & live music venues on the water — and we do.  Tonight we also have two that are IN the water — literally.  The Schooner Thomas E. Lannon is hosting a bluegrass sunset sail at 6pm featuring local legend Allen Estes with Gloucester’s best bluegrass musicians and Gloucester’s newest schooner, Ardelle, built by Howard Burnham (who build the Lannon) is hosting a sail at the same time with doo-wop/oldies girl group Honky Tonk Women of Glocuester.

Now, there are plenty of choices for those of you who wish to remain on land, from jazz standards, reggae, rock, funk, soul, motown — you name it.  See the full live music lineup here.

Video- Secret Swimming From Kenny MacCarthy

My podcasting buddy Kenny MacCarthy who runs his blog www.capeanninfo.com shares a secret spot for your dog to take a cool dip.

http://www.capeanninfo.com/ Dogtown has lots of trails, carved rocks, ghosts and history. It’s also "dog heaven" on a hot day.

Allen Estes will open for Orleans at North Shore Music Theatre on August 31

You know that being an FOB means you’re the very first to get the scoop on what’s up in Gloucester.  Well, Allen Estes just agreed to open for Orleans and we’re telling you BEFORE we even update the website.  We’ll do that later tonight.  In the meantime, you can get tickets here.

Here’s a video of Allen singing one of his new songs The Trouble with Me — destined to be a hit.  If you like the song, you can catch Allen with his son Dylan at the Block Party on Saturday and ask him to include it in his set at North Shore Music Theatre.

Decompression Unplugged ~ hot sound, tight harmony

A good way to judge the quality of an electric band is to hear them unplugged.  This video proves that The Bandit Kings are one of Gloucester’s best.  Here they are unplugged on a tiny TV set delivering all the power and energy of their fully electric shows.  Plus Renee and Ann Marie’s harmonies are perfect!

The video above features one of three of their songs from their excellent show (Decompression off their excellent Precious Stones CD — get it here).

You can see the entire show this week on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 beginning Wednesday at 6:3opm.  It also features one of Allen Estes‘ very popular (relatively new) songs, Peace and Harmony, which is not available anywhere for download or on CD.  This is part of our summer reprise of the most requested shows from Local Music Seen with Allen Estes.

If you don’t have cable or you don’t live in Gloucester you can watch the entire show on-line here.

Best of all, you don’t have to wait until Wednesday to see the Bandit Kings.  Go to the Rhumb Line tonight where they host the open jam to get your fix of one of Gloucester’s most distinctive sounds.  And check out the enterprising way they are raising money to make a new record — a very good cause, indeed.  I just donated and can’t wait to hear the new album.

“He who does not eat cheese, will go mad.”

This French proverb is printed on T Shirts and hangs over the door at The Cave — 44 Main St.  For some reason, it took Vickie and me 3 weeks to get there, but we finally made it yesterday and boy are we glad we did.  Then we took our bounty to a friend’s house.  The best way to  enjoy good food is with good friends, each being enhanced by the other.  Check out the video to see what we got and how it tasted.

Laura, who owns The Cave, tells me she’s got a 3 year lease and they will be open year round.  Sounds like a plan to me.  Vickie and I will be in again soon.

Just as The Cave has something for every palate, tonight there’s music for every possible taste on Cape Ann from string quartet to bluegrass to rock, soul, reggae, pop, New Orleans jazz, blues, metal, singer/songwriters — you name it.  Don’t stay home.  Check the live music lineup and get out on the town!

WCVB Channel 5 Chronicle Gloucester Episode

As many are aware, tonight at 7:30, WCVB Channel 5 Chronicle is airing an episode featuring Gloucester. This is in and of itself is fantastic; they also borrowed a bit my footage from my Greasy Pole Sunday film that I created for Good Morning Gloucester.

http://vimeo.com/45105201

Special thanks are owed Joey for making Good Morning Gloucester the ‘go to place’ for people like Maggie Harper, the producer of Chronicle, to discover more about what makes the heart of our community beat. During the entire week of Fiesta, then followed by Independence Day events, GMG covered all, posting countless feature stories, schedule of events, photos, and videos.

Thank you Joey C for all you do for our fair city!

As Gloucester’s Powerhouse of Positivity would say ~ YEAH BABY! Chronicle Tonight! Boom! We Got That!
