“Got Milk?” RNAC’s “Season’s Best Cookie Competition”

cookie scarf got milk

Saturday, December 21, 2:00PM

The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck

As part of the Holiday Art & Fine Crafts Festival, the Winter Solstice Party on Saturday, December 21 will feature a “Season’s Best Cookie Competition”. Any kind of home-baked cookie may be entered, except chocolate chip – everyone makes good chocolate chip cookies – as we are looking for competitors to come up different, unique and prize-winning entries.

The first prize winner of the cookie competition will become the proud owner of this hand-painted silk scarf by Adriana Mederos, titled “Got Milk?”  This beautiful scarf depicts Shortbread, Anise, Oatmeal-Raisin, Linzerkuchen, Chocolate-dipped Diamonds, Biscotti, Baklava, Sugar Cookies, Snowball, Mandelkuchen, Macaroons, Almond Mezzalune, Polvorones, Pizzelle and Crinkles. There is also a First Place Blue Ribbon painted on the scarf to memorialize the winner’s proud achievement.

There will also be 2nd and 3rd place prizes, as well as prizes for “best presentation” and “classic”.

First prize – “Got Milk?” hand-painted scarf

Second prize – limited edition trivet

Third prize – set of Ice Box Bling

“Best Presentation” and “Classic” prize winners will receive notecard sets

The cookie competition will be judged by the Honorable and Venerable Judges Ed Collard (renowned master of food competition judging), Mayor Carolyn Kirk (whose birthday is December 21, so come help celebrate her birthday by bringing your well wishes and most awesome cookies for her to judge), and Sister Felicia Ciaramitaro (the Cape Ann Queen of culinary delights, so bring on your absolute best).

We are hoping to have some unique and festive cookie entries, such as those depicted on this delectable scarf, but bakers are encouraged to enter what they know to be their best cookie (again, no chocolate chip). If you would like to enter the competition, please email gigimederos@gmail.com with “cookie competition entry” in the subject line and your name, type of cookie you plan to enter, and your phone number in the email body. Entries will be limited to the first twelve unique cookie entry submissions received (we want to have diversity and be considerate of the judges’ waistlines, and eating more than 12 cookies isn’t in anyone’s diet). Please be prepared to bake at least two-dozen cookies, for the judges and party attendees to taste and enjoy.

Also, RNAC is considering creating a Best Cookies calendar as a fundraiser for 2015 which would include the recipes, bakers’ credit and photos of the 12 cookie entries.  Please indicate in your email entry if you are willing to share your recipe and have it included in the calendar, if we go forward with producing it.

Hillary Clinton in Gloucester Today

hillary clinton in gloucester

Did you know that Hillary and Bill Clinton were in Gloucester today.  We didn’t see Bill, but Hillary came to the women’s breakfast in support of Carolyn Kirk at Castle Manor Inn this morning, along with her entourage of secret service gals.  It was very impressive.

Drive by Samaritans Strike Again!

The first part of this installment can be found here

This morning at 10 am the two Samaritans and their mothers came to my gallery to claim their rewards for finding $106 on Main Street and, with my assistance, it was returned to the owner. On the left are Paige and her mom Tracey Harmon, and on the right is Baylee with mom Mayor Carolyn Kirk. But the story of good deeds by these young ladies is not over – read on.

The envelopes are open, and the proud 13 year olds each display their $12.50 rewards.

Paige and Baylee with their small fortunes of reward money. What are they going to do with it? They told me they’re going straight to CVS, and spend it on toys to give to the Boston Children’s Hospital. Still making that good karma – that’s just who they are. You gotta love it!

A few Fred Bodin’s Photos of Harbortown Cultural District celebration

Catherine Ryan submits-

Hi Joey,

Here’s a few photos from Fred Bodin’s coverage of Tuesday’s May 28 kick off Celebration for the Harbortown Cultural District. The party was held in the Gorton’s gallery of Maritime Gloucester and it was packed! Check out the special cake –it very nearly covered a 4 x 6 table.

Gloucester from its water’s edge and beyond: the center for all! Like the “Harbortown” name, the cake was a mash up of two flavors, too. Lise Breen and Judith Hoglander worked with Jim’s Bagel and Bake Shoppe for this classic riff of Saul Steinberg’s famous 1976 New Yorker cover, a favorite motif for him.

Music filled the rooms and welcomed everyone. One of the Harbortown event’s surprises was the talent of musicians Zach Bridges & Steve Lacy from Henry Allen & The New Swingset. Here’s Henry Allen (on the steering committee for Harbortown) visiting with Mayor Carolyn Kirk and Karen Ristuben (Rocky Neck Cultural District) Gloucester ’s Rocky Neck Cultural District is a partner. Mayor Kirk spoke twice.

Leadership here and at the state level are advocating for the arts in a big way. The Harbortown Cultural District would not have happened without the support and commitment from Mayor Carolyn Kirk, Harbor Planning Director Sarah Garcia, Chief Administrative Officer James Duggan, all the Gloucester City Councilors, Senator Bruce Tarr, Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council representatives. The party filled up quickly. There was bountiful conversation and energy buoyed by appetizers and drinks thanks to so many wonderful partners and stakeholders. Here’s one of Fred’s crowd photos peeking through Maritime Gloucester’s display–what an apt framing for the themes of connection.

One of the first surprises on the evening’s program was a presentation from Harbortown partner, the Gloucester Public Schools. Teachers Kurt Lichtenwald’s  and John Barry’s S.T.E.A.M. (science technology engineering, Arts and mathematics) classes feature students’ and made, engineered musical instruments. David Puglisi came to the event and showcased his handmade plywood electric guitar see his youtube video!

Co-chair for Harbortown Cultural District, Judith Hoglander looks on.

Anita Walker, executive director for the Massachusetts Cultural Council gave a wonderful speech about Gloucester , this district, the arts and maritime connections. She spoke to the legacy of the continuous involvement of youth and fostering stewardship through generations. She took a moment to recognize a contribution completed for the application.

Fred captures the authentic spirit of Anita Walker in this one and sheer fun. The MCC is passionate about Gloucester and the arts across Massachusetts . Sarah Garcia surprised Walker with an iconic Gloucester southwester. They visited Nelsons on Main Street on the day of the site visit, and the classic yellow slicker hats and ancillary businesses of the fishing industry were obvious topics. To the left of Walker, Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Library Director, Carol Gray enjoys the moment.

More photos to come; David Cox, local media, and co-Chair Bob Whitmarsh were all snapping away at different points. By the way, one of the best Facebook pages in town, Fred Bodin may have some posted https://www.facebook.com/BodinHistoricPhoto

We’ll add some photos to our website http://www.gloucesterharbortown.org.

Thank you Joey and GMG for helping!

New Launch Service

DSCF2463 DSCF2464

Mayor Kirk pops her cork at the ceremony celebrating the start-up of the City’s new launch service.

Day boaters will now be able to come to Gloucester and have access to downtown using the launch. Boaters will be able to pick up available City guest moorings or drop anchor in the large Federal anchorage conveniently located in the center of the inner harbor, under the watchful eye of the Harbormaster’s staff. From these locations, boaters will be able to hail the launch on VHF channel 72 or call 978-942-0660 for a lift to one of Gloucester Harbor’s three public floats or the Historic Art Colony at Rocky Neck.

The launch is a first-class, 26-foot, 24-passenger, solid fiberglass “Duffy” built by Atlantic Boat Company. It was christened GLOUCESTERMAN by Mayor Kirk and Waterways Board Chair Anthony Gross.DSCF2442 DSCF2446 DSCF2448 DSCF2450 DSCF2452 DSCF2455 DSCF2460 DSCF2462 DSCF2469 DSCF2481

Evelyn’s Gloucester

evelyns gloucester

I went to Evelyn’s wake yesterday, accompanied by Jim Casey.  We arrived at Ross Funeral home early, before the family.  When I entered the first parlor, I immediately saw this beautiful arrangement of flowers and walked over to look at them, then at the card.  I was so proud and overwhelmed when I read the card, which said: “Deepest Sympathy on the loss of Evelyn who the City of Gloucester was blessed to know” from Mayor Carolyn Kirk, Police Chief Leonard Campanello, Fire Chief Eric Smith and USCG Station Gloucester.  The family was so moved by this gesture from the City of Gloucester, as was I, knowing that very special lady, Carolyn, was behind it.  This is such an amazing place in so many ways, the reason Evelyn so loved living here.

I put together a couple of photo collages to display at the wake and wanted to share them.  The first one was made so that her family and friends who had never been to Gloucester (many lived in the Wrentham/Norfolk area and RI) could see and understand Evelyn’s great love and passion for the place.  The second one is of some of the abundant life Evelyn experienced and shared here.  Special thanks to Kim Smith for the beautiful photo of Evelyn that I used for the central image on both collages.

In my 58 years, I have been very fortunate to have not lost any close friends or family members (except grandparents when I was young), until now.  This morning I went to put out recycling and trash.  When I pulled out the recycling bin, I saw the two empty champagne bottles Evelyn had brought to Sunday’s Mug Up along with pomegranate juice to make mimosas to go with her amazing lemon/lime cheesecake topped with homemade whipped cream.  I looked at the name of the champagne and totally lost it.  Its name was  “Barefoot Bubbly”.  That was Evelyn.  Barefoot as could be whenever she could be, and as bubbly as champagne.  Evelyn, you will be so sorely missed by many, but I know your beautiful spirit of light and love will shine on forever, and I am so happy to have known you.

During the past week I have spoken with many people who had only met Evelyn once or on a couple of occasions, but all were feeling the same sense of loss of a very special person.  That is because when you met Evelyn, her spirit went out before her, and that was what you encountered first – the “person” came next.  So whether you’d known her all your life, or for just a brief time, everyone had the same pure and beautiful experience of encountering her perfect self.  We should all live as Evelyn did.

I know Evelyn’s death will have a profound effect on many people, so great that no one will ever know the full extent of it.  For me, her passing has already given me a great gift.  My dear friend Wendie Demuth and I had a falling out at the end of last season and hadn’t spoken since.  Last week Evelyn and I were talking about Wendie, and Evelyn told me that one day we would reconnect, make up, hug and again be best friends.  That very thing happened last evening at Evelyn’s wake – and I know she was there, her big beautiful spirit cheering over what she had accomplished.

At the family’s request, Donations in Evelyn’s name can be made to The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester, MA, a place Evelyn loved and was very involved as a volunteer.
