One Year Anniversary of the Launch of the Schooner Ardelle From Len Burgess

Great weather Monday night for a special sail to celebrate the launch of the schooner Ardelle. It was one year ago last July 9, 2011 that the schooner splashed down into the Essex river in front of about 2500 people. It was a textbook Essex side launch that occurred at high tide about 6 p.m in the evening. What a sight is was. And, a year later here’s Capt. Harold Burnham’s doing what he loves! It would not have been possible without the amazing help of all of the shipwrights, friends and family who helped build and launch the Ardelle!

Harold lights a candle for the cake that celebrates the one year anniversary of the launch of the schooner Ardelle.

Aaron Neville says he’ll play songs from his new album (produced by Keith Richards) on Saturday

Aaron Neville – Don Was – Keith Richards

Check out this Aaron Neville interview with Aurelia Nelson on Northshore 104.9.  Aaron says he will perform many of his Grammy nominated hits in multiple genres, including standards, pop, soul, R&B, jazz and even some doo-wop from his new album (due out this fall) produced by Keith Richards (who also plays guitar on the album) and legendary producer Don Was, president of Blue Note Records, on which the album will be released.

Aaron also talks about his love of music, 50 years of writing and performing and how technology is changing the process of mixing and producing his new album.

When asked how he decides what songs to perform he says, “The voice is a connection between hearts … I just want to connect with the people there listening … ”  VIP tickets for Saturday’s concert are sold out, but good seats are still available.  Get tickets here.

Fiesta and Rockport Chamber Music Festival ought to be enough excitement for one week, but in addition to that, we’ve got 42 more artists in 18 venues, including a schooner!  See the full live music lineup here.

The Schooner Thomas E. Lannon’s 15th Birthday Sail

If you come to Gloucester or if you’ve lived in Gloucester and you haven’t experienced a sail on the most beautiful ship in Gloucester harbor, The Thomas E. Lannon then I really feel sorry for you.

It’s beyond just bouncing along on a pretty boat, it’s the warmth and friendly hospitality of the Ellis family, Kay, Tom and Heath.  It’s experiencing Gloucester harbor without the blaring of a diesel engine or the exhaust fumes.   It’s the peace, it’s the sunset, it is the friendships forged.

I’m telling you right now you just gotta go.  You have friends coming in from out of town?  Take them on the Lannon, you’ll love it,and they will thank you.

Help looking for ship to shore phone and Loran for Adventure

Hi Joey,

We need Gloucester’s help (especially those who know about old fishing boat parts) with one of the next restoration projects for Schooner Adventure.

We want to put an original ship to shore phone back in Schooner Adventure. I don’t know what kind it was. I’m hoping someone out there recognizes this and could possibly help us to find one.

While I’m at it, we’re looking for an old Loran depth finder as well.

Attached are pictures of Captain Leo Hynes using them on board Adventure in the 1940’s.

Photos and a quick note from Laurie Fullerton and Harold Burnham

Hi Joey,

Thanks for posting those amazing photos of the Ardelle at dawn and others…I have been putting them on our Facebook page but they are really terrific.

Harold’s daughter Perry Ardelle Burnham (boat was named after her and Harold’s grandmother) took this photo yesterday of the Lannon sailing closely past the Ardelle. We are hoping to have some evening schooner racing this summer…and I do like this pic. Not sure if you can use it but thought I would send it along.

Thanks again for all your support and encouragement!

Happy Memorial Day.

Adventure Spars From Mike Dyer

Mike Dyer writes-

A small crew has been working on making replacement spars for the Schooner Adventure, at Harold Burnham’s yard in Essex.  Right now we’re working on the main boom.  These pics show a series of steps for putting together laminations of 12” X 2” Douglas Fir planks.  Note: we’re not done yet!
