Allen Estes Band Larcom Theater, Beverly MA Saturday, October 5, 2013

This is not a review.  I would never presume to critique any single one of the great musicians we have here on the North Shore.  Let’s think of it more as a message to those out there who figure they’ve seen Allen Estes perform a number of times, and thus may have passed on tickets for this wonderful Beverly show.  In a nutshell… too bad for you!  Forget that the historic Larcom Theater is a fully restored, gorgeous facility with hand-painted tin, beautifully designed curtains, world-class stage lighting and, well… the list could go on and on.  Forget that the place is virtually next-door.  Forget it all.  This was about a truly incredible songwriter, centerstage at a venue which absolutely captures the nuance of his lilting voice and intelligent, heartfelt lyric.  The sound (under the direction of Will Hunt) was nothing shy of spectacular, with its focus exactly where it should be – the lead voice.  Allen’s words were clear as a waterfall.  His songs could be heard as they’ve never been heard before, and appreciated for the finely crafted works of art that they are.  But there was an unexpected knockout punch that came on with subtlety… and that was Allen’s masterful orchestration of the entire set.  Starting the show solo, he gradually, one by one, eased players onto the stage until ultimately finding himself backed by five of the finest musicians New England has to offer.  I cannot for the life of me think of any place in the world I’d rather have been on Saturday night than right down the street from us all (not “up the line”, which makes everyone think it’s far, far away when it’s really not) at the Larcom Theater, 13 Wallis Street, Beverly, MA.

Huge Update On the Adventures of Bubba the Missing Tortoise!!!!!!

IMG_2296 - Copy

Dear Joey,

As you know, a few weeks ago our dear family pet of 24 years decided to wander off into the South Woods of Rockport while staying with a friend of ours. We were having renovations done on our Pigeon Cove home and Bill Crosby of Thatcher Road, generously offered to take in our 64 year old pet tortoise until the work was completed. September 20th was an exceptionally warm day and Bubba decided to break out of his pen to take a look around. Tortoises can move pretty quickly when they want to. He had at least a two to three hour head start before he was missed. For the next eleven days Bill, myself and my husband Geoff, family, friends, neighbors and people we do not even know searched the woods daily. Bubba is a South American Red Footed Tortoise. After living with us for nearly two and half decades, he is quite domesticated. He comes to us when he is called, follows us around the house like a puppy, eats out of our hands and is truly a member of our family.

Typically Bubba lives outside in a secure pen during the summer and moves into the family house when the days and nights get chilly. Needless to say we were very anxious to find him as the fall weather grew seasonally cooler. A multitude of compassionate people from all over Cape Ann volunteered their time searching for our well camouflaged, vagabond creature. Countless acres were covered countless times. Tiny pre-schoolers from Rainbow Day School, located down the street from where Bubba was last seen, joined in searching the school yard under the supervision of the school’s owner Wendy Hyatt and her staff. Some of the September evenings dipped near to freezing with very cool day time temperaures. Bill and Geoff hired professional dog trackers up from Connecticut to find him, but  the results fell short of a happy ending.

Then on October 1st as I was leaving work, I received a call from my husband. “Guess who has come home?” I was ecstatic! It seems Geoff had gone into the woods once again calling Bubba’s name. This time however he decided to activate the door-lock alarm  of his car over and over. Bubba’s home pen is near where the family cars are parked. Geoff wondered if Bubba would recognize the sound he had heard daily for nearly eight years. What happened next fell into a miraculous timing of events. Geoff left after about an hour with no sign of Bubba. A little more than an hour later Bill heard his dog Buddy barking. The handsome, black German Shepherd usually only barks when cars are coming up the dirt road to their secluded woodland home. There were no cars approaching. when Bill went outside to investigate, he saw Buddy barking at something on the hill about twenty yards from his porch. He could not believe his eyes! There was Bubba sitting on a rock in the sunlight looking down at them! He snapped a picture with his i phone, sent it to Geoff and the rest was nothing but a blissful, happy reunion!

We deeply wish to thank everyone who helped us in any way to rescue our Bubba!  During the weeks he was gone we were sad and fearful for our pet. We were also hopeful that HE MIGHT FIND US!  And so he did!

With appreciation and grateful hearts,

Bubba the tortoise, Barbara and the Goddard family

Hello Joey,

The sand has been so low at Good Harbor Beach lately! Today I noticed that the remnants of a rock wall and pilings are now exposed. (They’re across the creek from the grassy area of the Bass Rock Beach Club.) I’ve never seen these before, and wondered if they’re part of the old second footbridge. Perhaps Fred Bodin has an archival image of this to share. The rocks are mortared, and there are two more pilings sticking up between the wall and the creek (by the people’s feet in the photo).

Send Us Your Pet’s Selfie!

Rosie Selfie.-Recently Paul Frontier put out a call for selfies, which got me thinking about selfies in general. I love seeing people’s selfies, and as an artist (the original self-portrait-makers!) I would love to see even more selfies.

Rosie SelfieI asked my sweet terrier Rosalicious if she’d consider making a selfie and promised for her efforts that we’d post hers on Good Morning Gloucester. She jumped at the opportunity for the extra attention and gave it a whirl with my cell phone (she’s not that good at it but I don’t have the heart to tell her so, and besides, a promise is a promise).

Rosie Selfie.-3jpg

The above selfie is her ‘best of the bunch’ I think. It reminds me of Mariah Carey’s #Beautiful video, featuring Miquel, where Mariah is bathed in ethereal late day light.

Send to kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com your pet’s selfie between now and Tueday and I will post them this week.

Mover and Shaker Gayle Piraino Meets Another Gloucesterite In Vegas

Good Afternoon Joey,

Wow, it’s a small world indeed! I just got in from Las at 7 Vegas this morning. Our company GAP Promotions exhibited at the National Beer Wholesalers Association’s Annual Conference at Caesar’s Palace on Monday/Tuesday. We left Saturday and never stopped until we left for the airport at 8PM last night. It’s a “work hard/play hard” event but so rewarding when you get to meet your customers face to face to thank them for their support. Plus where we work with Food and Beverage Clients on a National basis, not much beats this event!

I try to say thank you to as many clients as possible and yesterday it was like Thanksgiving reunion when John Saputo, Owner and President of Gold Coast Eagle Distributing, Inc. in Pensacola, FL entered our booth! We were conversing about some new products and he quickly noticed Gloucester on our badges and immediately mentioned you, Felicia and so many others! It was fantastic as I had no idea of the relationship of him, his fine distributorship to Gloucester. Was wonderful to listen to and so nice knowing the many ties he has to Gloucester!

This is always a good time — great food, wine, beer, spirits and people — and all for an excellent cause: supporting your local YMCA.  There’s even music.  This is the place to be tonight!

Great line up. I have seen so many musicians that I have never heard of at these events and some that I have heard often, as well.  It has certainly been a most enjoyable time. Not to mention  the delicious food and deserts. Looking forward to many more.

Tonight at the The Rhumb Line ~ Thursday Night Blues Party with Dave Sag’s to host Steve Sadler and so much more. Put on your dancing shoes!

dave bw

It’s shootout at the Ofay Corral this week as we pit the commodious Mr. Steve Sadler against the lowball slider, Mr. Jim Scoppa. Both massive guitarists who’ve paid their dues with the likes of guys like Tom Hambridge and and Michael Coombs, we’re sure to see phlogiston exuding from every pore. Steve, with his artery-clogging style is a local favorite and everybody’s first call for fiddle, mandolin and lapp steel, but  tonite it’s full bore with the electrical glitar. Jim, the gas giant,is big on the Eric Clapton school of channeling dead blues echoes. Our tail gunner is none other than that happy-go-lucky steam engine: Mr. Forrest “Frosty” Padgett, one of my favorite defibrillators. National Grid  will be standing by with  bucket trucks and spare 6L6GC tubes, ready for the blown fuse. I’ve actually been forced to learn some new songs.
And, don’t forget: we’re nothing without you, the viewer. Live music is best! Hours still 8:30 to 11:30.

Panda Cams are dark, NOAA’s site is down, but Cape Ann TV is up, Gloucester Sings & Lights are on at Larcom Theatre

I sympathize.  Life is tough when you can’t get your panda fix from the National Zoo because the Panda Cams are dark.  Or perhaps you’re wondering what to do after seeing that scary message “NOAA.gov and most associated web sites are unavailable” at  www.noaa.gov.

But don’t be depressed.  When the Allen Estes Band takes the stage on Saturday, the lights will be on at the Larcom Theatre in Beverly (which opened in 1912 — same year as Fenway Park — under the slogan “Lit Completely by Electricity” and it still is!)

Cape Ann TV is still on.  And tonight they premiere a new Local Music Seen show featuring Marina Evans as Allen Estes’ guest on Channel 12 at 6:30pm.

Marina sings new songs off her brand-new CD, Unbound, which she’ll release next Sunday, Oct 13 at concert at Cape Ann Community Cinema.  This will be an excellent night of music, so mark your calendars.

Don’t worry, Marina will be there even if the Government is still shut down.

And, of course, there’s live music all week here in Gloucester.  See the live music lineup here.

Just in case any of you in Washington who voted to shut down the government are reading this post about all that’s going on here despite your antics, we’ve got five words for you: THE SHOW MUST GO ON!
