Peaches Ripening in the Warm Sun ~ Do I Hear Bellinis, Anyone?

Belle of Georgia peach ©Kim Smith 2014 copy

Bellinis would make a festive addition to your Labor Day/Schooner Festival weekend brunch or dinner, especially at this time of year when the farmer’s markets and grocer’s shelves are brimming with tree-ripened fresh fruit.

Our ‘Belle of Georgia’ white-flesh peach tree never disappoints. Each and every year since first planting, this semi-dwarf peach tree gives us mouth-watering sweet peaches. Not all of the peaches are perfect and the ones that are not eaten out of hand are whipped into smoothies, cooked in confections, or macerated with Prosecco.

~ Bellini Recipe ~

Marinate peeled, pitted, and sliced (halved or quartered) peaches in Prosecco for several hours. Just before serving, puree the peach-Prosecco mixture. Spoon the puree into champagne glasses, about 1/3 to 1/2 filled, and to taste. Gently add more Prosecco to the puree. Add a drop of raspberry liquor, Chambord, or a few fresh raspberries to the puree, to give the drink that beautiful pinky-peach glow.

Bellinis are traditionally made with white-flesh peaches such as ‘Belle of Georgia,’ but any variety of sweet peach will do.

Homecoming

While touring the USCG Barque Eagle yesterday, I was honored to meet Daniel Carmody….an original crew member of the Eagle in 1946.

I was humbled to be there to witness his homecoming and to have met him and his son.

Hi Joey,

My name is Gordon and I’m a fine art photographer specializing in New England. I thought your readers might be interested in the images from my recent photo shoot around Cape Ann. I’ve created a collection of them with a vintage vibe that I used to try to capture the kind of romance and nostalgic atmosphere of Cape Ann’s fishing community.

I love your blog and follow your updates on Facebook, and I would be thrilled to have some of my photos of Cape Ann featured on it.

Here is the link to the Cape Ann photo set.

Hi Joey,

I was aboard the Adventure as she joined the Lannon, Ardelle, Coast Guard boats and others to welcome the Coast Guard Barque Eagle to Gloucester on Friday.

She is a beauty!    I hope everyone has an opportunity to see the Eagle while she is in port.  Captain Stephan Edick took the helm for our spectacular sail.  Here are

some photos of our day aboard the Adventure including the newly renovated fo’c’sle, We had some youngsters eagerly helping to hoist the sails and man the helm. 5

Enjoy the Schooner Festival!

“Beautiful” May Not Do The Eagle Justice

Thatcher, Finn, and I spent a glorious morning touring the United States Coast Barque Eagle.  Gloucester is obviously fortunate to be home to such amazing vessels as The Adventure, The Lannon, and the Ardelle, but…as I explained to my boys…this weekend is like a Red Sox home game in that those ships get to play host to some other fabulous “away team” vessels.

The Eagle being one of them.

I’m not quite sure that “Beautiful” does her justice.

What do you think?

The Eagle is conducting an Open House until 7:00 in the evening. I highly recommend a trip down behind Americold to see her!

Gloucester Welcomes Schooners with Loaves of Warm Virgilio’s Bread!

Joe Virgilio ©Kim Smith 2014 -2.This past spring while working on Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph film project, I filmed Joe Virgilio making Virgilio’s Saint Joseph rolls and wrote a post for GMG about Virgilios. At that time, Al Bezanson, owner of the Green Dragon Schooner, shared that during Schooner Festival, Joe Virgilio welcomes the schooners with warm loaves of freshly baked bread as they sail into Gloucester Harbor.

Al provides more details:

“Hi Kim

Virgilio’s started donating bread to the visiting schooners two years ago, and it now threatens to become a popular new tradition.  The first year Brett and Max Ramsey, in Brett’s high speed inflatable, met up with schooners as they entered the harbor and presented them with a loaf or two along with a pineapple.  In some cases the bread was still warm from the oven.  When that happened with Adventurer, out came the butter, and the bread was enjoyed in a flash. Last year Max and Dom Nesta made the deliveries, and more of the Sea Scouts may be handling it this year.”

Schooner welcome

In the photos Al provided, Green Dragon had just received a delivery in the outer harbor as she entered from Manchester.

Schooner welcome 1

I was so struck by the Virgilio’s generous, welcoming gesture and thought what better time to pass along Al’s story than the night before the Schooners begin to arrive. As Al points out, “When you get around schooner people you may hear them talking about the need to have extra butter aboard in Gloucester. This is a very big deal in fending off other ports that are vying for schooners that same weekend. Thanks Joe and the high speed Ramsey/Nesta delivery guys!”

Boston Globe lists Gloucester Schooner Festival in “10 Ways to Spend Labor Day Weekend in New England”

After this spectacular article in the New York Times a couple of weeks ago, it’s nice to see this piece in the Boston Globe’s travel section listing 10 Ways to Spend Labor Day Weekend in New England.

Weekend Starts Tonight with FREE Harbor Loop Concert feat. What Time Is It Mr. Fox?

So you think the Schooner Fest starts tomorrow?  Think again.  You’ve gotta consider a free concert at Harbor Loop right in the heart of Gloucester’s waterfront, as the beginning of Schooner Fest. (Complete Schooner Fest Schedule here.  Henri Smith Tickets here)

Last year I saw crew coming off visiting schooners who were charmed by the Harbor Loop concert and astounded when I told them we have these every week. Thank you Bradley Royds!

So come on down to Harbor Loop tonight and party with one of the most creative local bands, What Time Is It Mr. Fox?

Music begins at 6:30pm with Piano Forte opening.  Just in case you’ve never seen Mr. Fox, read this:

“Time has come for Mr. Fox”
Barry Thompson, Boston Herald

“Catch him as his star rises”
Adam Feldman, Time Out New York (Critic’s Pick)

“a triumph of mood and style, an unforgettable musical, theatrical and emotional experience.”
Edge

“can simmer in blues, tremble with high drama, and faint into a yawning croon”
– Michael Brodeur, Boston Phoenix

Don’t You Have Better Things To Do Than Get Eaten By a Shark In Cape Cod? It’s Schooner Festival weekend In Gloucester!!!!

You know you can avoid getting eaten by a shark in Cape Cod by attending Schooner Festival this weekend don’t you.  The way I see it, it’s your only option really (unless of course you’re one of those thrill seekers who like to jump in shark tanks and cages with lions in which case by all means head on down to the trafficky Cape Cod).

Beth Van Duzer sends a doozy of a thank you and JAWS THIS WEDNESDAY HARBORWALK CINEMA

Cat Ryan submits-

Hi Joey,

Over 1000 people attended the Lego Movie Wednesday night. Gloucester Stage sponsored a fun one. Markouk sold out. Jaws is presented by Cape Ann TV. Great job Matt Coogan, Community Development, Carol Thistle, Mack and Zak; North Shore 104.9 team; Wenham Museum; and Rob Newton Cape Ann Community Cinema for the community through art.

Joey, but wait; there’s more. You and several GMG contributors, and other Gloucester residents, generously contributed content for the HarborWalk. Enjoy the feedback by a grateful mom who took time to write a memorable note to Mayor Kirk and the City.

Plus, photos from David Cox and a super cool lego prize from Cat Barbagallo.

From Carol Thistle, Senior Project Manager for the City, sharing a note from the City Website:

“I thought GMG readers would be interested to see this great thank you note that Mayor Kirk received from Beth van Duzer; her children won a HarborWalk Certificate at Wednesday night’s Lego Movie as part of the HarborWalk Summer Cinema Series. Many children participated in the HarborWalk challenge, and fourteen youth completed all story posts making them official “HarborWalk Explorers”.  In addition to the certificate all the kids received a HarborWalk goodie bag filled with prizes, including a special “Ten Pound Island” Lighthouse Lego designed by Cat Barbagallo. Bring in your completed sheets next week! Here’s the note

Greetings Mayor Kirk.
I just wanted to tell you what a joy it was to complete the Gloucester Harbor Walk. My friend, Mary-Clare Dalzell, was born and raised in Gloucester. It was her idea to go to the outdoor movie where we heard about the Harbor Walk. My daughter, Lucy, has autism and Mary-Clare’s son, Lee, was born with some medical issues so we did drive the children around to the markers that were further off the beaten path. I just wanted to share with you some of our experiences.
We started off our search up at Stage Fort Park. We parked in the 20 minute parking area asked in the visitor center if they knew where the marker was. They either really didn’t know or did an amazing job at making us believe they didn’t know – either way they didn’t tell us where the marker was. We left the visitor center and roamed around a bit, looking near Tablet Rock and down by the water, but we were unsuccessful. As we returned to the visitor center Lee noticed the pillar, right at the end of the visitor center’s drive. Two of the children were instantly exuberant as they each made their rubbings and we happily returned to the car, followed by a police officer. Apparently, we were close to the 20 minute time limit and were really, really close to getting a ticket. The officer was very nice and probably got a chuckle out of our antics and, most importantly, we didn’t get a ticket.
We moved on to the markers down the road where, I must say, we found lots of parking. Some of it was only 15 minute parking but that was enough for our clown car adventure of having the children and parents jump out of a minivan, run down to a marker, make the rubbing – try to make the children read a bit about the marker – and jump back into the car for the next marker. Whilst on the walk Mary-Clare found a photo of her Grandfather and Lee took a selfie with the photo. Lucy found a boat named Lucy and took a photo with it. Lola took time to stop and smell the flowers at the memorial garden.
The best part for the children was when they found the markers all together along Rogers St. Each child (yes, even the two 12-year-olds) delighted in running to be the first to claim a rubbing. From this Harbor Walk my children and I saw parts of Gloucester we had never seen before and I found out where to park – which is almost everywhere. Lucy, Lola (my other daughter), and Lee had a grand time. Mary-Clare and I probably had more fun than the kids, by the end of the day they were a little cranky since our mission was to complete the Harbor Walk in one day, which we did. I homeschool my girls. We are studying Medieval History this year, and I already told them we will revisit Hammond Castle and the Joan of Arc statue when we reach that point in our curriculum.
As Mayor you probably receive a lot of complaints. I just wanted to make sure you knew how much fun we had. It was fabulous that our children were able to meet you last night and all the children were ecstatic with their prize bags. Lucy has already announced that she will be displaying the Ten Pound Island Lego lighthouse in her room. Lola can’t wait to show up for the Jaws movie in her Gloucester Harbor Walk t-shirt and hat. Thanks again to the City of Gloucester for creating an adventure that anybody can take part in. Thank your for posing with photos with the children and rewarding them for completing the walk. It was definitely one of the highlights of this summer.
Best regards,
Beth van Duzer”

WARM OCEAN WATER ALERT!

Good Harbor Beach Gloucester MA ©Kim Smith 2014Good Harbor Beach ~ Click to view width-wise

If you are anything like me, its difficult to enjoy swimming when the water is icy cold. For the past three days, its been delightfully warm, even late in the afternoon, which is the time of day when I usually take a break from work to go for a walk (or swim). I’m heading over to the beach again this afternoon and hoping for four swimming days in a row!
