I took the liberty of adding the fog to this scene in Rockport’s little inner harbor. It makes for a more atmospheric picture.

Plastic fish baskets submitted to The GMG Flickr Group by ciabat

These fish baskets are what are used by a majority of fishermen on deck as they sort all the different species and sizes of fish they catch.   They are much lighter and clean up alot nicer than the old galvanized wire baskets that they used up until about the mid eighties.

After a quick google search I found a company down in Memphis that still sells the 2 bushel wire baskets-
Amazingly they sell for $84 for the wire ones while the plastic ones were priced at $23.95

Colorful Industry pic submitted to The GMG Flickr Group Pool by ciabat

When HACCP regulations came into the seafood industry it made wood handled shovels not usable for food handling and the industry turned to plastic shovels rather than the old wood handled and aluminum shovels we used growing up.  These plastic shovels suck for chopping ice and you need to put at least two or three shovel fulls of ice in the smaller plastic shovels compared to the deep strong hard aluminum shovels we used to use that would hold much more ice.

Shelley writes-

A video slide show of a Gloucester fisherman, his crew, and his boat, FV Comet. The photos were taken by myself, Shelley Nugent, Skipper Darren Hart, and a crew member. I heard this song while on this trip fish’n with Darren, it inspired this video. The crew is gillnet fishing off the coast of Gloucester, Massachusetts. I never tire of watching this, it’s beautiful. I spent a week working on this, trying to figure out programs and software. I enjoyed every minute of it. Please watch and enjoy.

Seaman Scarves Fund-raiser on March 2 at Cape Ann Brewery

From Kat Valentine at Parlez-Moi Blog-

In a previous blog I talked about using the very old, traditional knitting pattern for Seaman’s Scarves as a possible fund-raiser here in Gloucester. The Seaman’s Scarves are used for endeavors such as  Christmas at Sea, a project The Seaman’s Church Institute. Ever since 1898, during the Spanish American War, The Seaman’s Church Institute has sent thousands of packages to mariners at Christmas time. Included in the packages are hand-knit items donated by knitters from around the country. These include watch caps, socks, vests, and, of course, scarves (photo above), in addition to lip balm, hand lotion and toothpaste and brushes. Last year over 10,000 garments were sent by knitters and thousands more were needed. (They also offer information on how citizens can help our mariners who are the victims of pirates at sea.) Their web site offers a list of free patterns in PDF format for both knit and crocheted patterns for the items they need.
Subsequently I designed 2 original Seaman’s Scarves. One is in Aran Style:
And the other is Guernsey Style:
I am writing the directions for these scarves and Tuesday night, March 2nd, at 6:30, I will be at Cape Ann Brewery with the patterns. Knitters are invited to come and “purchase” a pattern for whatever donation they would like to make. Cape Ann Brewery has graciously offered to match whatever is donated and the proceeds will be donated to the fund for the children of Matteo Russo, a Gloucester fisherman who was lost, along with his crew in January of 2009. I will be present to help knitters get started on the pattern, if they wish (bring worsted weight yarn and size 8 needles) and I’ll help anyone who is interested with either of the patterns.
This should be a great time — an opportunity to learn something new, do some good for our community and have an excuse to drink Cape Ann Brewery’s scrumptious product. I look forward to seeing you there….

International Lobstermen Travel to Maine through MLA Lobstermen’s Exchange

From The Island Institute via Monkeyfist at the Casco Bay Boaters Blog

Lobstermen from all over the world will travel to Maine March 4-14 through the Lobstermen’s Exchange organized by the Maine Lobstermen’s Association (MLA).

Seven lobstermen from Tasmania, West Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and the Caribbean will meet with Maine lobstermen.

It begins with a Mid-coast Regional Meeting March 4 from 3:00 to 5:00 at the Maine Fishermen’s Forum at the Samoset Resort in Rockport. Exchange participants will spend 3 days at the forum networking with Maine fishermen. Afterwards, the Lobstermen’s Exchange will hit the road-visiting wharves, local businesses, attending community dinners and hosting talks in Downeast, Midcoast and southern Maine locations. Maine families are graciously providing home-stays and organizing community events for their international lobstermen counterparts.

Maine lobstermen are encouraged to come “talk shop” with their peers from overseas and share ideas on gear, bait-usage and how to weather the recession.

A Downeast regional meeting will be held at the Ellsworth City Hall from 2:00 to 4:00 on March 9 and a Southern regional meeting will be held at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute from 2:00 to 4:00 on March 12. Lobstermen are encouraged to attend.

The Lobstermen’s Exchange will host events in Cutler on March 7-8, Jonesport on March 8, Mount Desert Island area on March 8-9, Stonington on March 9-10, Vinalhaven on March 10-11, Phippsburg on March 11-12, Long Island and Portland on March 12-14. International lobstermen will attend the Boston Seafood Show on March 14.

“During these challenging times, it’s important to share information and hear about what’s working for lobstermen in other regions,” said Patrice McCarron, Executive Director of the MLA.

Funding for this project is provided by the Maine Sea Grant, Maine Fishermen’s Forum, Island Institute, Maine Research, Education and Development Fund and in-kind support from Maine’s fishing communities and the MLA.

Fishing Film – “A Fish Story” (2/24/10)

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24TH @ 7:30PM

On this national day of protest and awareness, come share in the tale of two women who lead their communities in a battle for control of the ocean. Angela Sanfilippo of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Shareen Davis of Chatham, Massachusetts were born into fishing families and married men who continue to make a living from the sea. Fishing defines who they are and has sustained their communities for generations. But their way of life is threatened when a powerful coalition of national environmental groups file a lawsuit that could put hundreds of fishermen out of business. Three hundred years of fishing tradition and the health of the ocean hangs in the balance.

Courtney Hayes, one of the producer-directors of the film, will present the film and host a Q&A after.

Things To Do- Fish ‘n’ Fiction Event Feb 23

Fish ‘n’ Fiction
A new series hosted by the Phyllis A. Marine Association
Sawyer Free Library, Friend Room
Tuesday, February 23, 2010
6:00-8:00pm
Suggested Donation of $5.00 per person

Captain Richard Arnold will lead an informal conversation on his personal experiences fishing on board the Phyllis A., out of Gloucester harbor from 1984-2000. Please come and join us with your own stories.
This program benefits the Phyllis A. Marine Association who mission is, “to promote the history of gillnetting in Gloucester, Massachusetts through the display and preservation of the fishing vessel Phyllis A.” All conversations will be recorded for our oral history collection.
Additional conversations will occur on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
We offloaded the Phyllis A back when we handled fish at our dock.  The Arnold Brothers were about as classy as you get not only on the waterfront but in humanity in general.  These men are role models believe me and to have the opportunity to hear the stories as told by Richard, well let’s just say it’s something that no one who loves the fishing industry should miss.

Jimmy T Survivor Casting Call Video Has Been Accepted

Jimmy T applied to be a contestant on Survivor and his video application has been accepted.  Read here-

jimmyt0907,

Please check back on February 22 to see if your video was selected as part of the final 10.
Click this link to view your video:  http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor/casting_call/video_player.php?vid=4164&playvid=yes

Forward this email to your friends and ask them to vote for your video or to enter their own.

Good Luck from CBS!

Won’t you check out Jimmy’s video and cast your vote for him?

Let’s help our boy get on and represent Gloucester.

Cathy Tarr instructs how to vote-

I registered at the CBS site – I thought that maybe you had to register to access voting. Normally I wouldn’t register and give up my email to a commercial site like that, but – not only is it a home boy, but how perfect would Jimmy be on Survivor?!

Anyway – I went to the rules and read the fine print. (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor/casting_call/rules.php) A panel of judges picks the 10 finalists from this round, then the general public votes on the final 10, starting on February 22.

We have to wait until Monday to see if he made the Final 10. Good luck, Jimmy!
