Sheree Zizik and Cruiseport Gloucester personally deliver breaking news to Sista Felicia that they will be rolling out the Red Carpet to make The Cookbook Launch Party a night Gloucester will remember!
Sista Felicia writes-
In early June, I reached out to Sheree Zizik about having the Gifts of Gold: In a Sicilian Kitchen with Sista Felicia Cookbook Launch Gala at Cruiseport Gloucester’s exquisite ballroom. I knew her venue overlooking Gloucester’s beautiful working harbor would be the perfect place for this celebration. Sheree is a community-oriented businesswoman who, time and time again, generously gives of herself and her business establishment, taking excellent care of her customers with the utmost attention and respect. She welcomed me with open arms and embraced hosting the cookbook event as if it were her own. She immediately reassured me that she personally would see that every detail planned would be delivered Sista Felicia style.
It was Sheree who guaranteed recipes from my cookbook would be prepared and served by her caterer, Vinwood Catering. It was Sheree’s idea to literally roll out the red carpet upon which guests would walk. It was Sheree’s idea to give GoodmorningGloucester’s paparazzi a designated spot to photograph guests as they arrived at Cruiseport for the Gala. It was Sheree who insisted all would be taken care of, thus allowing me to be able to relax and to enjoy the festivities with my guests.
Merely thanking Sheree is not enough. I am so grateful to know her and to call her my friend. Gloucester is so lucky to have such a community-spirited and dedicated business owner in its midst. Please help me thank Sheree Zizik for her part in creating such an extraordinary celebratory evening by supporting her and Cruiseport Gloucester in the future.

A Few Pics From the Book Club @ Duckworth’s
Hey Joey,
I thought you might like to check out a few pics from this month’s book club event at Duckworth’s Bistrot. We had a great time with Gloucester born and raised author Anna Solomon as she discussed Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels with a fantastic group of folks. Next up is the always thoughtful (and hilarious) Steve Almond discussing Stoner by John Williams on September 15. Tickets available here: http://www.easternpointlithouse.com/#!product/prd1/708038181/the-writer’s-book-club-%40-duckworth’s–sept.-15

Midori, my favorite oriental restaurant
A few months ago, Midori Chinse and Japanese bistro (32 Washington Street) started hosting an “Artist’s Cocktail”, 8-11PM on Wednesday nights (live music by Henry Allen and the New Swingset, as well as by guest artists; plus other things like poetry and dance by guests, etc.). That event was the occasion for me to eat at Midori for the first time in a few years.  The time I had been there in the past I had not been overly enthused by the food, but now that has totally changed!  I now go almost every Wednesday night and sometimes once or twice more during the week. It helps that I now live very nearby, but I would probably go even if I didn’t.  The prices are reasonable, and I love their food! They offer a wide range of Chines and Japanese cuisine. (Their Japanese dumpling soup is one of my personal favorites.)
Besides that, the owner and staff are friendly and take care of their regular customers. Â A few times the manager has sent to our tables complimentary portions of something special from the kitchen or a scoop of ice cream. Just yesterday he sent my friend and me small, well-presented plates of fantastic, spicy macaroni and cheese.
A sampling from their $8 lunch buffet:
Here are some more photos I’ve taken there:
A few people have mentioned that when that restaurant first opened several years ago they had a bad experience of one kind or another. Â If that was the case, as far as I can tell things have really changed! Although sometimes the wait staff seems stretched a little thin, I (and friends of mine) have been going regularly for months with no problems. On the contrary, it’s now my favorite oriental restaurant in town!
Seafood Throwdown, Farmers Market, Live Music on Schooners and in the Streets. It’s still Summer folks!

Can you feel it? Â People trying to pack a whole summer into the last week before school starts, which seems to get earlier every year. Â It feels like there’s so much going on that every choice we make effectively says “No” to a dozen other things we’d like to do. Â Take today for instance. Â Live music starts at 11:30am at Stage Fort Park and continues into the night at restaurants, clubs, @ Shalin Liu, on schooners and in the streets. Â See the full live music schedule here.
Just in case that’s not enough for you, there’s also the Farmer’s Market at Stage Fort Park from 3-6:30 and today you can catch NAMA’s only Gloucester-based Seafood Throwdown of the year at 4:30 featuring a showdown between 2012 HarvestFest champs Gloucester’s Willow Rest and 2008 Genoa World Pesto champs Beverly’s Prides Osteria. Â Spectators get to taste the food so you really don’t want to miss this one!
See how much fun these Seafood Throwdowns are in this video by Joey from the 2010 epic rematch between Passports & Dog Bar.
Joe Thomas & Memory Layne on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tonight

Giuseppe’s gets it. Â They know how to blend food and music into an entertaining evening out for all ages.
Earlier this year they partnered with T Max, editor of The Noise Magazine to feature local singers and songwriters in what became a very popular Singer – Songwriter Shuffle.
Beginning tonight at 6:30pm, Giuseppe’s owners, Joe Thomas and Memory Layne are Allen’s guests on his Cape Ann TV show Local Music Seen with Allen Estes on cable channel 12.  The show airs again on Friday at 1pm, and Sunday at 6pm.  For all of you FOBs, who don’t live in Gloucester, you can now watch Local Music Seen and other shows on Cape Ann TV’s wicked cool on-line streaming service here.
If you do live here, bop on down to Giuseppe’s after the show and see rising stars Renee & Joe perform live at 7pm. Â Then you can head over to the Rhumb Line and catch Allen with special guests, The Backwoods Ramblers later in the evening.
And tomorrow, live music in Gloucester starts at 1pm. Â See the complete live music schedule here.
All of us are looking forward to a few weeks from now when Giuseppe’s fires up their Singer/Songwriter Shuffle for an exciting new season.  Stay tuned  . . .
In case you forgot (or didn’t know) about Tacos Lupita…
Truly authentic Mexican tacos, $2 each. Â (They also have lots other meat options and Latin American dishes, of course.)Â I got two tacos the other day, one with chicken and one with cow tongue.
Yes, cow tongue! Try it – it’s really good! I know that the thought of one’s own tongue and teeth chewing up the tongue of a dead cow grosses a lot of people out. But the meat is tender and very flavorful!
Tacos Lupita is at 63 Washington St. in Gloucester. Â Open Monday through Saturday 11AM-9PM.

Kickstarter Projects We’re Loving Right Now
Posted by Lucinda Scala Quinn
Hi Everyone,
I love hearing people’s stories of why food and cooking is important to them- whether it’s how they’re putting it on their own table, getting out there with a message to make the food system better, or teaching someone else your best recipes and tips.
When I began my publishing career, there wasn’t any crowd-sourcing help or a way to get the message out to tons of people to fund books. Truth be told, I self-published my first book before it was picked up and published years later! Luckily, there are a ton of different ways to get the message out today, and I’ve found these two Kickstarter campaigns that I wanted to spread to all of you Mad Hungry-ers.
Sista Felicia’s Sicilian Cookbook
As a fellow Italian and for those of you that have watched my show, some of my best food memories are of cooking from my family’s Italian heritage. Those recipes are filled with warmth, comfort, history and flavor. Felicia is on an ambitious mission to share her family’s recipes and traditions through a series of 4 cookbooks that will embody her “commitment to ensure the past is not lost but is forever saved for future generations”. Felicia has just a little more to go on her goal and has 10 days left.
Take a minute to watch their videos, read their blogs and Facebook pages, and if you feel empowered by Felicia, please donate!
Best,
LSQ

Blue Moon
For several reasons, Blue Moon is my favorite beer to order out on a hot summer night (warning to readers, I know even less about specialty and craft beers than I do about wines). The first reason being is that it always makes me think of the sweet song “Blue Moon,” written by Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart, and covered by many artists; the second reason is the attractive label, and lastly, because it tastes pretty good!
Family friendly tree-top dining on the 7th Wave’s upper deck
This was intended to be a post about the 7th Wave Restaurant in Rockport. We sat down and ordered drinks, which I managed to photograph. I was just so hungry and dove right in as soon as our dinners were served. We were halfway through dinner, enjoying some very fabulous fried clams, before remembering that I had wanted to take photos–anyway, next time! I will say, they were the best friend clams of the entire summer. Craig Kimberley, are you reading this recommendation?
My favorite rendition of “Blue Moon” is Ella Fitgerald’s, but Billie Holiday’s is nearly just as wonderful and the following video has some lovely stills of Lady Day and of fashions from the 50s and 60s.
Toby Pett adds Elvis Presley’s tenderest of renditions. This video too has many beautiful photos, of The King.
Ann Straccia from Gloucester Ingredient List Makes Mario Batali’s First Video In His Batali Cooks 4 Series
Hi Joey
I hope you’re well and enjoying your summer. I wanted to reach out to you regarding a new video series we just launch entitled Batali Cooks 4, where we asked fans to send us their top 4 favorite ingredients using the hash #batalicooks4. Mario picked a list and created a custom recipe and video based on those picks.
In this inaugural video, mario chose a list from Ann Straccia of Gloucester which includes monkfish, artichokes, lemon and kale. Mario then created a custom recipe and video – where he walked viewers through all the steps of the recipe in his signature style – teaching us along the way.

‘Sista Felicia’s’ Sicilian cooking
Gloucester-rooted book is now a series
By Gail McCarthyStaff Writer
Felicia (Ciaramitaro) Mohan grew up in a family surrounded by simmering pots of pasta and bubbling brews of tomato sauce, all created by mothers and grandmothers who never used a recipe.
Their style of cooking, straight from their memory, included a pinch of that ingredient, or a handful of another, and so on.
But two generations later, out of fear of losing these heirloom recipes forever, Mohan — at the urging of her husband Barry — set out to make a cookbook of sorts for her twins, Amanda and BJ. From that seed sprouted her effort to make such a book. But she never imagined that the original scope of the work would grow exponentially.
