“Become a Wine Expert” Series Taught by Kathleen Morgan

Through arrangements made by Toby Pett and Joey I was invited to take Kathleen (Erickson) Morgan’s wine class at Savour Wine and Cheese in exchange for writing about my experience. Toby had recently taken the class and absolutely raved about it and wanted to bring it to GMG readers. I have mentioned previously that I typically purchase wine based on the attractiveness of the label and I have to tell you that after just this first class I will no longer have to rely on this wholly unreliable method! Tuesday night I tasted the most wonderful and intensely flavorful wines imaginable, paired with some dreamily delicious cheeses, and can’t wait to take the next class (plus all my fellow students are super fun!)

Kathy is a fantastic instructor and she has designed the course into five easily comprehensible evenings covering: 1) Taste, 2) White Wine, 3) Red Wine, 4) Practical Knowledge (including vintage, proper temperature, stemware, etc.), and 5) Special Deluxe Wine Pairing Dinner.

The “Become a Wine Expert” series of classes are held on five consecutive evenings, from 7:00 to 9:00, at Savour Wine and Cheese, located at 76 Prospect Street. Kathleen provides each student with a terrific notebook full of maps from every wine producing country and region, articles, recommended books and links, descriptions of wine varietals, an interesting wine aroma wheel for describing wines, and more.

Savour Wine and Cheese carries wines in a range of prices from $10.00 a bottle up to hundreds. According to Kathleen, there is a “sweet spot,” in prices, where from about $14.00 to about $24.00 a bottle you can get much higher quality and taste for the money than in the $10.00 to $12.00 dollar range. Beyond $24.00, the quality is less incrementally exceptional in relation to the cost of the wine. The wines we tasted ranged in price from $13.99 to $27.99.

The first wine we tried was a classic Sauvignon Blanc by Fernlands of New Zealand ($13.99). Kathleen explains that there are four noble grapes (six if you wish to include Sirah and Sauvignon Blanc), and they are Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet, and Pinot Noir. Noble grapes is a wine term used to describe the grape varieties commonly associated with the highest quality wines. The name Sauvignon Blanc means “Wild White,” which describes its green, herbaceous flavors. The Sauvignon Blanc was the lightest of the wines we sampled and I think would be delicious with pesto, green salads, and chicken. Kathleen paired it with the most wonderful runny stinky cheese, Bonne Bouche goat cheese, which I am going to run over and pick up some this afternoon because I just can’t get that delicious flavor off my mind!

Savour Wine & Cheese -6 ©Kim Smith 2013Our second wine of the evening was Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer from Alsace, France ($27.99). I do not typically enjoy Gewurztraminers and generally find them too sweet. Wrong! This wine was one of my favorites of the evening, simply “Top of the World.” The Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer would pair perfectly with Thai food, spicy Asian food, and had floral notes of orange blossom and jasmine (although that sounds very sweet, I repeat, was not too sweet). Kathleen recommends serving the Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer with Thanksgiving dinner and I am most definitely taking her advice!

Savour Wine & Cheese -5 ©Kim Smith 2013The third wine of the evening, Meomi Pinot Noir from the Central Coast of California ($24.99), was my very favorite. Wonderfully rich and smooth, and tasting of chocolate velvet cake, cherry-berry, and everything yummy, the Meomi Pinot Noir seemed to be the favorite of the group as well. Kathleen explains that Pinot Noirs are the most expensive wines to produce because the grape (Vitis vinifera) has the thinnest skin, which makes it susceptible to rot, sunburn, and pests. The name is derived from the French words for “pine” and “black” alluding to the grape variety’s tightly clustered dark purple pine-cone shaped bunches of fruit. An inexpensive Pinot Noir is probably not made from Pinot Noir grapes; most likely it is made from Gamay grapes.

The fourth wine of the evening was the Five Vitners Zinfandel from Dry Creek California ($23.99) and here is where I learned not to drink several samples of each wine during the course of the evening.  I recall it being delicious, but I was having too much fun and had stopped taking notes at this point…next week we are sampling eight wines and I will be sure to only take a tiny sip of each so I can give a description of all and hold up my end of reporting about this wonderfully enjoyable and enriching experience!

Visiting Liv in Brooklyn: Roberta’s and the Doughnut Plant

Here we are at Roberta’s in Brooklyn. The exterior looks very nondescript but what welcomes upon entering is a warm, vibrant interior.

Roberta’s is a high energy establishment with fabulous food and fabulous service. The lively, yet cozy, restaurant is always packed to the brim with an eclectic crowd–young people on dates, groups of  friends, families–with a line down the street, even in the dead of winter, and on week nights!

The key to Roberta’s success is not only their out-of-this-world delicious pizza, appetizers, seafood, salads, and veggies, but equally as important to their success is their ultra efficient and friendly wait staff, and super accommodating house policies towards the customer. Unlike one of the newer restaurants on Cape Ann, which absolutely will not allow any add-ons to their limited pizza menu (they want only to serve it as only they deem acceptable, and I say, come on–it’s pizza), Roberta’s has a complete menu of pizza toppings! Roberta’s menu is not terribly extensive (nor pricey), but because their’s is a select range of entrees, pizzas, and first courses, you don’t feel the menu is limiting. The produce is farm fresh (much is grown in Roberta’s garden), and the seafood sweet, melting in your mouth as only super fresh seafood does.

As you can see from Roberta’s menu posted above, it is not vast, but neither is the menu restricted to 5 or 6 pizzas. 

Next stop is Liv’s favorite doughnut shop, The Doughnut Plant, which is well worth getting off the subway on the way to your destination, walking many blocks, stopping at the Plant for amazing doughnuts, and then walking back the same many blocks to hop back on the subway and resume your day.

George Krewson III Remembers The Patio

The Patio holds a long lasting memory for me.  My Dad purchased the Oceanside Hotel in 1931 and we spent the summers there for the next 14 years.  Although the hotel had a fine dining room with great menus. it was not uncommon for guests and Dad, Mom, and I to visit the Patio.  The shops around it were popular and shoppers would take time out from those visits to dine there.

In 2002 I traveled to Magnolia from my home here in Florida to make a long-sought tour of the many attractions.  The most memorable moments were enjoying lunch with a boyhood friend, Billy Melanson, at the Patio.  Billy has since passed on, but that visit with him at the Patio will emain in my memory.  We grew up in our early years totally enjoying Magnolia and its many attractions, including the Patio.

Patio Farewell Week From Terry Weber

For the last two weeks, the owners of the Patio Restaurant–John and Irene Burke, have bid farewell to their restaurant and to their many friends, family members, and ‘regulars’ at the Patio. The Burkes recently sold the Patio after over 30 years in business on Lexington Avenue in Magnolia. Click on this link for just a few snapshots of one of their farewell parties.

The Patio has been described by many as a “home away from home, an extension of one’s own living room, a clubhouse” and more. This is due to the warm hearts and hospitality of John and Irene, their family members: Margo and Chris Rezza, Melissa and James Rezza, and long time friends and co-workers: Kathy Mackin, Lori Somers, Dave Morley, Charlene Young, and Lopes. 

Thank you to John and Irene Burke, and their family, who have made the Patio a second home to many Magnolia & Gloucester residents. Even though “we’ll see you around the neighborhood”, we’ll miss seeing you on a regular basis as you enjoy some long overdue relaxation. The neighborhood won’t be the same without the Patio.

Backyard Growers Update: School Harvest Days — Pics & Stats

Students at West Parish, Beeman, and East Gloucester Schools had an awesome time harvesting veggies and doing other harvest activities with the Backyard Growers Program last week. The children harvested a combined total of 272 lbs. of produce!
Veterans School Harvest Day is coming up this Wednesday, and Plum Cove School did their harvest over a series of days. We’ll update you on these schools soon!
Three of the schools–West Parish, East Gloucester, and Plum Cove–incorporated the fresh fall veggies, including carrots, beets, potatoes, and squash, into the school lunch program. Yum!

Thanks to all of the children, parents, teachers, and school staff who made Harvest Days a success!

Part II Topside Grill Picture of the Week

Went to powder my nose at Topside Grill and what was hanging on the wall but a Rubber Duck Photo. see my post yesterday for some comments on the good grub at Topside.

I wanted to make sure I could catch the Red Sox clinch the playoffs so off to Topside Grill with the bar upstairs in case dinner runs too long. Dining downstairs I forgot about the game once the mussels arrived but I only missed the first inning. (Lester was awesome, Sox win the division just like 2007!)

I’ve got weird rules for eating out. I hate it when two people order the same thing, what if it is subpar now you’re stuck with two! Never get the shark, it can be weird, stay away from pasta, shoot, pasta is always better at home.

Broke all my rules, glad we did. The Mako Shark Bites were perfect. I almost ordered them again for dessert. The mussels app was also excellent. I’ll stop saying excellent now because everything was. Two entrees of sautĂ©ed shrimp over linguini. So why was everything so good? Everything was fresh down to the tomatoes in the sautĂ©ed shrimp. The shrimp and linguini made the best breakfast cold this morning.

I should really work on getting a photo before we destroy the beautiful looking dishes.

Tomorrow I will post “The Picture of the Week” that was framed in the bathroom at Topside. Rubber Duck thought it was pretty funny. She screamed “Cuz, you don’t look so good!”

Good evening, Joey!–Linda Rae Castagna Writes In

We have just enjoyed 8 great days in Rockport/Gloucester and loved every moment.  We just completed our last evening by dining for the first time at DUCKWORTH’S BISTROT on East Main Street, and thoroughly enjoyed every moment, especially trying 1/2 dinner’s x 4.  Your lobster, from CAPTAIN JOE and SONS, was featured in the risotto, tender and juicy.  The staff couldn’t have been kinder or more eager to help us.  And because we were 1st timers in the restaurant, we ended up with a seat right in front of the window.  Going to tell her we’re new next time too!
On the way to our car we found Beth underneath piles of recycled sails in AGAIN and AGAIN, happily sewing the latest tote bag.  That’s a fun store!
As always it is worth it to make the long drive from Milford, New Jersey to Gloucester.  We simply never tire of your homeport.  Linda and Rob Castagna

Lanesville Music Fest Next Saturday 9/28 – Perfect for the whole FAMILY!

The Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street in Gloucester, presents our 4th Annual Lanesville Music Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 1:00 to 11:30 pm.  (see music lineup here)

Poster - LCC Music FestivalThe Festival features ten hours of great live music starting outdoors on the grounds from 1-7pm with some of the North Shore’s best musicians covering:  bluegrass, traditional and contemporary folk, Celtic, country and blues, jump, jive and boogie. Great food and beverages will be sold by Smokin’ Jim’s BBQ with beer and wine on sale, as well as local crafts and children’s activities.  Admission for the daytime music is by donation.   

 It all continues indoors on our dance floor from 7:30-11:30pm, featuring the great, KBMG band (King, Brown, Mattacks and Ginandes).  Advance tickets for the evening dance party are available at Gloucester Music on Main Street and the Plum Cove Grind in Lanesville for $12 until the day of the event.  Tickets will be $15 at the door and you can purchase during the daytime music event.

Last night guests enjoyed a beautiful dinner prepared by Ken Duckworth, followed by a lively book discussion led by Steve Almond.

The The Writer’s Book Club event was hosted by Duckworth’s and Eastern Point Lit House. The book of the evening was Stoner, written by John Williams, and it is Steve’s all time favorite. He had with him his own worn copy, from which he read several passages and quoted often. For the most part, the group adored the book and, after listening to the discussion while photographing, I am putting it at the top of my list of books to read this winter when design work and filming slows down.

Last night Allen Estes performed his hit, “Not With Ya Hands” about Gloucester’s hero Howard Blackburn at the Alchemy Bistro Wicked Tuna Challenge, which was filmed for next season’s Wicked Tuna by the Nat Geo crew.  And our own intrepid Lisa Smith caught all the action for Cape Ann TV.  We can’t show you everything we shot until early next year when Wicked Tuna Season 3 premieres, but we can show you Allen’s performance right now and you can catch a glimpse of the film crew at the end.

Best of all, you can see Allen Estes live with a new six-piece, all-star band on October 5th at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly.  You’ll hear old favorites along with new music he hasn’t yet recorded.  Allen — with his new band featuring multi-platinum guitarist David Brown with Fairport Convention founder Dave Mattacks on drums, Matt Leavenworth on fiddle, Steve Burke on keyboards and Wolf Ginandes on Bass — will have you on your feet!

This will be a night you won’t soon forget.  Good seats are still available.  Get them here.

Alchemy Chef Scott Jensen wins Wicked Tuna Challenge at Alchemy last night

Last night Alchemy’s chef Scott Jensen narrowly defeated chef Steve Morlino of Boston’s Union Bar and Grille (where Chef Scott got his start) at the Alchemy Bistro Wicked Tuna Challenge, which was judged by the audience, who got to taste both dishes.

Before dinner, Alchemy’s mixologist Felicia Grossi, who won the Block Party’s first Ryan & Wood Cocktail Contest mixed up her Ryan & Wood signature cocktail for fishermen and guests aboard one of the Tuna boats.

And our son, John, got to pilot the boat.  “That boat’s got a lot of tech!” says John.

The entire event was filmed for Wicked Tuna Season 3 and Lisa Smith caught all the action for Cape Ann TV.  You’ll be able to see some of the event on Cape Ann TV before Wicked Tuna Season 3 premieres, and we’ll let you know when to catch it.
