Local Blogger You Should Know- Abigail Cahill O’Brien- The 5th joy

Abby Cahill or how she now goes by Abigail Cahill O’Brien grew up in a bedroom less than 100 yards from mine. We all played tennis on her parent’s courts deep in God’s Country (East Gloucester if you didn’t already know). Her parents threw a fantastic tennis tournament in the summer in which the winners in each division would take home mini sterling silver salt and pepper shakers. I have a pair tucked away in a drawer somewhere from a mixed doubles win.

What is crazy is that I had not seen or been in contact with her or any of her brothers or sisters in about 30 years and just within the past year or so I’ve met up with Jason, Josh, Jonathan, and now through the magic of the intrawebs- Abby.

Apparently Abby is all grown up now and has matured into a lovely woman who has developed an exquisite sense of style. Her beautiful blog should be made into a magazine. It is filled with visual treats and recipes and all sorts of other goodness but the content and layout really is of professional caliber and her writing flows.

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vanger’s are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Giuseppe’s Ristorante & Piano Bar Going Into The Space Formerly Occupied By Elliott’s At The Blackburn

Memory Layne (not her porn star name I’m told) and her man Joe are taking over the space formerly occupied by Elliott’s in the Historic Blackburn Building.

Check out the website for now and look for updates as to the renovations taking place in these pages.

Here’s the website for Giusppe’s Ristorante and Piano Bar

From the website-

It seemed like a simple request…

From the back of a restaurant, I called out, requesting one of my favorite songs.

Joe looked up at me from the piano and asked, “Can you sing it?” After we met that summer evening, Joe and I did what everybody does on Cape Ann…..walking beaches, breathing salt air, taking in the great food and entertainment.

Neither of us enjoyed being separated once the off-season rolled around and he traveled abroad for work.  It didn’t take us long to figure out it was time to create a special place for people to enjoy great music, food and company.

We’ve been working and dreaming, in the hope that you will enjoy a unique and wonderful experience here at Giuseppe’s Ristorante and Piano Bar.

Friendship Carriage Tour In Rockport With Ruth and Curley

Ruth and Curley can be found in either Rockport or Salem and can cater to someone’s wishes for a carriage ride before and after weddings or for special events.  Imagine this- you take your girlfriend or wife out for a nice dinner and then have Ruth pick you up after dinner for a nice carriage ride where you pop the question or just rekindle a little romance.

I first met Ruth when she became the sole female contestant in the Passports Rogue Burger Challenge where she put in a very respectable showing even beating many men twice her size.  Unbeknown to me Ruth had just gotten out of a yoga class and wandered into Passports off the street all disheveled so when it came time to handing out nicknames for the Rogue Burger Challenge the nickname “Homeless Ruth” was born.

Here is some video from that day-

Here the burgers were presented-

Kim Smith Writes In About Baltimore Orioles

Dear Gardening Friends,

With orchard fruit trees coming into bloom, we should be seeing the Baltimore (Northern) Orioles any day now. In mid-March we filled our hummingbird feeders and placed them in the garden, in anticipation of the earliest hummingbird scouts, and last year the orioles drank freely the sugar-water provided for the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Sugar-water recipe for orioles and hummingbirds: 1/4 cup granulated sugar to 1 Cup warm water. Stir to dissolve the sugar.  Wash feeders in hot soapy water, with white vinegar added, and replace sugar-water on a twice weekly schedule, to prevent mold.

Oh Joyous Spring!

Warmest wishes,

Kim

“…discloses strange new vistas that nonetheless seem to have existed since ancient times.” -A.O. Scott, New York Times

“Rapturous! Stunning! A riot of color!” -Ella Taylor, Village Voice

“A visual feast…Unlike anything I have ever seen before!” -Lou Lumenick, New York Post

Do not miss the highly anticipated new animated masterpiece from the producers of “Kirikou and the Sorceress” and “The Triplets of Belleville.” Magic, fantasy and Celtic mythology come together in a riot of color and detail that dazzle the eyes in this sweeping story about the power of imagination and faith to carry humanity through dark times. Features the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Mick Lally, Evan McGuire and Christen Mooney.

Young Brendan lives in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids. But a new life of adventure beckons when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying an ancient but unfinished book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the fairy Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan’s determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil?

Nominated for a 2009 Best Animated Feature Oscar.

It’s Been far Too Long-Chickity Check Bowsprite- A New York Harbor Sketchbook

It’s been far too long since I’ve visited buddy Christina’s Bowsprite- A New York Harbor Sketchbook

I love her illustrations and stories and I suspect if you dig GMG you will love her blog too.

I’ve been encouraging Christina to apply for a stint at the Rocky Neck gallery because I just know the work she would do with our industrial ships would be such a treasure.  I’m not sure if she followed through with her application but it would be a real treat for all of us.
