Dave Marciano Has Balls

Not too many people other than my favorite blogger Doug Maxfield that have the balls to write articles like the one Dave Marciano wrote in today’s GDT-

Letter: Coalition sector support now haunting fishermen

Click the link above to read what Dave has to say.  If what he says is true (and believe me I can’t even begin to understand how complex it all is) the way of life of the independent fishermen in Gloucester Ma will be lost forever within a generation.

i’m not sure how many people understand how sweeping the changes will be to our port but if it all is privatized the way it sounds like it’s going, go grab all the copies you can of John N Morris’ book Alone At Sea about the Schooners and Ron Gilson’s book about the waterfront An Island No More because the way of life as independent fishermen in Gloucester will be history and those two guys captured it in a real (non-romanticized way) better than anyone.

Melissa Smith Abbott Interview Part II

As promised here is part II of my conversation with Melissa Smith Abbott

I’m pretty sure we could have easily done parts III IV and V as Melissa has so much to say.

You can visit her website here-http://www.anadamabreadbook.com/

The Mrs read through it on the beach yesterday and said it was very cool and noted that for someone who grew up around here it would be extremely interesting.

Read Doug Maxfield

That is all.

To make it easier for you I’ll provide this handy link-

http://northshorewaterman.com/

I may just refer every newspaper reporter to him from now on because he can say all the things that should be said but most are afraid to for fear of retribution.

As a matter of fact here is a suggestion to all newspaper folk-  You wanna know the straight dope on what’s really going on in the commercial groundfish industry- email Doug.

Chickity Check It! Doug Maxfield Speaks The Truth About Fishing

Unfortunately for the industry guys like Doug Maxfield don’t get book deals.  His truths and clear cutting of the bullshit that gets reported about commercial fishing for one reason or another gets ignored by major media and instead bananheads with very little real commercial fishing experience get anointed experts in the field.

In the current day and age when it is so fashionable to hop on the green train the general public and even worse- food writers buy into whatever crap the environmentalists label green or not green or safe or not safe and more often than not once one of these people say it’s so the rest of the  minions of loyal environmentalists fall right in behind them without ever doing real investigative work for themselves.

They ought to talk to guys like Doug or better yet read his blog- North Shore Waterman for the real deal.

Like the header for his blog?

image

It’s from a picture I took.

Here is your warning-Doug is RAW.  If you are offended by sexual innuendo or harsh truths with extremely salty language about all things commercial fishing don’t bother going there.

But if you want to read about what is really going on in the fishing industry from a back man’s perspective check out Doug’s blog and make it part of your daily reading.

Here’s the first post that I’d suggest you read to further illustrate why I think Doug Maxfield should be the guy that gets the book deal-

get your soap box

So I’m on the crapper the other day, and with no other options within a step the width of my under-pants, I found myself flipping through the New Yorker.  Wouldn’t you know it I found an article about the tragic state of the worlds fisheries         (http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/books/2010/08/02/100802crbo_books_kolbert?currentPage=1).  Always interested in people’s take, I read it.  HOLY-SHIT.  Do people outside of the industry and the towns of New Bedford and Gloucester actually believe any of the tripe?

Blog Notes- A Few Explanations

gmglogohires

Here are some random notes about how some things work on the blog.

Some of you probably know this but I get enough recurring questions about how some things work so it bears repeating to get the newbies up to speed.

Subscribers and The Nightly Feed-

There are people that subscribe to the blog and get an aggregation of the day’s posts sent to their email box at night.  You too can subscribe by clicking this link-

Subscribe To Good Morning Gloucester

The point of this post isn’t to get you to subscribe, but to explain what it is that you are getting when you subscribe.  Throughout the day and night the GMG contributors and me create posts.  I assign time slots to our contributors and they schedule their posts for their time slot.  Paul Frontiero has the 10AM,Joanne Silva has the noon, Beth Swan has the 2PM, Manny usually posts early in the morning and the rest of the contributors sporadically post when they can. I usually create around 8 posts and edit and move stuff around so it works as I see fit.

My goal is to fill every hour at the top of the hour with a fresh post from 6AM-7PM.  Often times I’ll schedule a 1AM post as well for the late night crowd that has GMG bookmarked and view the blog directly at the site through the URL- https://goodmorninggloucester.com/

The thinking behind this is that I want people to know that every time they check back they will get to see something fresh.  I could easily load up everything at 6AM and that would be it for the day but I like that folks come back and check in and comment on each story and often times the regular folks that comment are having conversations in the comment section. Bloggers live for your comments.  It lets them know you are listening and have opinions about what they are saying or are doing a good job.  The pay may be nil but the comments go a long way to making it worthwhile.

Anyway, back on track.  What you get when you subscribe as I said before is an aggregation of the daily posts which is done by a service called feedburner.  Feedburner collects the information that all our contributors post up til about 8PM and then creates a sort of newsletter email which the subscribers usually receive around 8:30PM from what I can tell.  It is a very condensed version containing the pictures and text.  It does not have any of the features that the blog has in the sidebar like the running comments, the blogroll, the search box,the Gloucester Music Schedule, The Flickr Picture Feed, the calendar or the live count of how many people are on the site at any given time.  The subscription feed also does not contain any of the contact buttons or tabs along the header of the blog.  I think that for many folks getting the nightly feed is just fine and I’m very happy that folks get GMG in what ever way they can.  I just want to make sure that people know that the blog is constantly changing throughout the day and checking in by bookmarking the link gives you a bunch of extra options for ways to explore and enjoy the blog.  Ideally everyone would subscribe and also check back in throughout the day and comment on stories they like.  that IMO is best case scenario for someone who really wants to get the most out of GMG.

Ill post a picture of what the feed looks like as opposed to what the live blog looks like-

This is what a post looks like in the subscription feed-

image

This is what that page looks like when you access the blog directly through a bookmark on your browser-

image

The Sidebar-

Here are pictures of some of the options in the sidebar on the blog when you access it directly by bookmarking this link-

https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/

The Search Box located just below the Subscribing Section in the right hand column(sidebar)-

image

If you go to the site or if you are on the site instead of looking at the feed, first find the search box in the right hand column.  Then go ahead and type a subject in the box that interests you.  an example might be Fiesta, or Jimmy T, or Survivor, or Lanesville, Block Party, Chamber of Commerce, Gloucester At Dawn, Homie or a restaurant around Gloucester that you might be interested in.  Type in anything that search box and you are bound to find dozens of posts on those subject matters and more.  if it has happened in Gloucester, chances are we’ve covered it and the search box is the place to find it.

Just below the search box is the Recent Comments section in the right hand sidebar on the blog-

image

The recent comments section collects all the recently posted comments on each different post in chronological order.  You can click on each comment to read it and/or reply yourself.  This is a big part of what the regular GMG readers do and I like how it builds community within the site.  I have the setting set to 15 comments so the last 15 approved comments get listed here.

Just below the recent comment section is the link to The GMG Theme Song from Earl and Arch- Gloucester Til The End which you can download for free or listen to on Gimme Sound

Then You have below that The GMG Local Music Schedule Which is an Aggregation of the Gloucester Music Posts

image

Below that Is Instructions on how to get a free GMG Sticka-

image

Next down the list in the Good Morning Gloucester Right Hand Column is The Blogroll (a list of links to sites of note)

image

To save space the rest of the right hand column (sidebar) in order from top to bottom starting under the blogroll goes like this-

Flickr Photos,City of Gloucester Announcements,GMG Podcast Subscription,Calendar, Archives, Top Posts,Who’s On Map, GMG Listener Line Number,GMG Tree Project Thank Yous, Blog Stats, Topic Cloud,Category Lists, GMG Authors,RSS Links, and The Gimme Sound Music Schedule.

Please feel free to leave comments and let us know what you would like to see more of and we will try to accomodate

Chickity Check It! Annisquam Herb Farm Blog

image

Annisquam Herb Farm has been faithfully blogging since August 1, 2005!  Holy smokes!

Here is the first post way back on 8/01/05-

In February 2005 I bought what use to be an Herb Farm. The property borders a drainage brook which in turn flows into a saltwater cove. The Conservation Commission gave its approval of a small addition to the existing one bedroom structure which now joins the old house to the greenhouse.
There is a certificate here awarding the owners for growing and protecting the native plants. It is my intent to continue that legacy.
The grounds of the Herb Farm have not been tended for many years. There are many trees so sunny locations are few. There are 3 terraced gardens that were over run with plants, one is complete shade and covered with ivy and euonymus. I have tried to be very careful to not disturb the local flowers and herbs. I am finding wild things popping up in several places: digitalis, lunaria, strawberries and trillium for example. In addition to the desired plantings the knotweed had over run the the yard on the West side. It was so dense the well was hidden in a jungle of stalks. By late spring the jewelweed was 3 feet tall covering much of ground not inhabited by the knotweed.

Chickity Check It!- Ysolt Usigan’s Gloucester article has hit the Huffington Post

Ysolt Usigan’s Gloucester article has hit the Huffington Post:

I’ve always wanted an Eat Pray Love adventure of my own. Author Elizabeth Gilbert once told Oprah that your journey can happen right in your own backyard — you don’t have to go far. Although there’s much to be desired about traveling to Italy, India and Indonesia for a year — that’s a dream come true really — let’s get real here… Some of us have jobs, obligations and financial constraints.

But the reality is, I’ve been in a funk and desperately needed a change of scenery. I didn’t care where I went, I just wanted to go somewhere and all I had was a long weekend. So for my personal journey, I traveled to an unlikely place: Gloucester, MA, a quaint fishing town on Cape Ann in Essex Count, MA where films like The Perfect Storm, Mermaids and Grown Ups were once shot. I’ve never been there. I had no expectations. It was the perfect place to regroup, revive and rediscover (myself). Although I didn’t pray (that’s never been my style), I ate, I loved and I found my spirit in four days.

Click the picture below for the entire story on the hugely popular Huffington Post

image

Arian Doud  from Matter Communications the PR firm that was hired by The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce reached out to Ysolt and invited her to visit Gloucester. Then, Tracey at the Bass Rocks hosted Ysolt and her traveling companion for the weekend and Matter provided Ysolt with a pre-set itinerary that included all the local businesses that wound up in her article. It’s a good example of why Matter was hired and the positive attention they’ve brought the city through it’s PR marketing.

Local Ad Company Makes National Music Video For Guster

My childhood buddy Jonathan Cahill- AKA Abby Joy Cahill’s older brother writes-

Hey Joey,

Some breaking news for you:

Universal Republic Records has chosen Chad Carlberg, owner of Bait & Tackle Ad Company in Gloucester, MA,  and director with Production Blue, to create the new music video for Guster’s new single “Do You Love Me?” Chad Carlberg and Gloucester-based visual artist Jon Sarkin have begun collaboration on the project. Chad and Jon have been friends and have worked on a number of projects together for ten years. Chad and Guster drummer Brian Rosenworcel have been longtime friends as well.
Two months ago, Brian was talking to Chad about needing artwork for a new album (in two weeks!) and still had no artist. Chad suggested Jon Sarkin. Sarkin has work in the private collections of Meryl Streep, Robert DeNiro and Diane Von Furstenberg. He has shown at Diane von Furstenberg, The DeCordova and others (see www.jsarkin.com for more), has been featured in three BBC documnetary films, an ABC Medical Mysteries, articles in GQ, Vanity Fair, Readers Digest, etc. Brian loved the idea, and a few days later the band was on-board and Sarkin was off and running on the album cover and all art for album.
Shortly thereafter, Brian asked Chad to direct one of the 12 songs off the new album for a web video. Chad chose the single “Do You Love Me?” But Brian called back later and recommended picking another song because the single was getting a real budget and would be done only by a director with Universal’s approval. But Chad was up to the challenge and said, “Let me try.” He wrote five treatments, and created a video page for his pitch of demo work. Even though he had Brian in his corner, Brian had no influence over Universal, who held the purse strings.
As it turned out, Universal and the band members loved the idea that Chad pitched using Sarkin as part of the video. This pitch video was based on a test Chad previously made with Sarkin and noted musician, Sten Bowen who also co-directed with Chad on this project.
Under Chad Carlberg’s direction, this is the first major Production Blue project, (Bait & Tackle Ad Company’s new, high-end production partner). Chad is assisted by Emile Doucette, Bait & Tackle’s Technical Director and Tom Papows, Camera Operator.
See video here about the idea for the music video and the Carlberg/Sarkin/Guster relationship:

Beaux Arts Auction Preview Art Show

Rocky Neck Gallery, Ann Fisk Room, August 6 – 11

THURSDAY, August 5: Nights on the Neck, 5:30 to 9pm

Catherine Strisik

Performers and entertainers include:

  • Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of local musicians and Schooner Adventure crew members, are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.
  • Carol St. John will explain how graphology (the study of handwriting) works, talk about appropriate uses, and call for participants to contribute handwritings to demonstrate its validity for a fun, friendly, positive event.
  • Rick Drost began singing with a Kingston Trio-style group in high school, continued in a small folk group in college, then a glee club, and an opera chorus. He started writing and singing around coffeehouses in DC and New England in the ‘70s, finally settling in Cambridge, MA, where he was a member of the folk-rock group Parts and Labor. He performs at least once a week, wherever he goes.
  • Catherine Strisik, daughter of well-known Rockport artist Paul Stisik, has been active in the writing community of Taos, New Mexico, for over 26 years. Her poems have appeared in numerous publications including The Cafe Review, The Comstock Review, Peregrine, Northwest Review, War, Literature and the Arts, and others. Her new book, Thousand-Cricket Song, from which she will be reading, is receiving much acclaim. This book of poetry gives a glimpse, through Strisik’s eyes, into Cambodian life 25 years after the Khmer Rouge slaughter of 1.7 million Cambodians through execution, disease and starvation. "Here is a perfect, clean and delicate (powerful and often terrifying) work of art," said John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War.
  • Laura Dow / Zumba. Working out can be healthy, rewarding, and beneficial; it can be lots of things, but it’s never been known to be an exhilarating experience… until Zumba! The Zumba program fuses Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a fitness program that will blow you away. Laura will present three Zumba rhythms ~ Salsa, Tango, and Flamenco~ to give you a taste of the program that’s taking the world by storm.
