Duckworth Beach Gourmet Reopens Jan 25th With Some Changes

Greetings!

While we’re in the middle of our January "vacation", we want to let you know that for us this is a working vacation. During the time between now and our re-opening on January

25th, we’re going to be making a few changes in the store. We can see from our sales receipts that wine sales are up, so we are going to increase the inventory of wines, starting with wines that pair well with hearty winter foods.

And speaking of "hearty winter foods", we are rethinking our approach to prepared foods in order to make the offerings more appealing and accessible. Every day we will have a specially priced dinner combination that includes an entrée and two side dishes. We’ll even suggest a wine that we think will complement the meal. Of course, we will continue to be your "Invisible Caterer". We’re happy to provide some or all of the dishes for your dinner parties. Give us a little lead time, and we can work out a menu together.

Now that cardboard boxes and Christmas trees are stashed at the curbs, we’re eager to get back to our tasting events. They are so much fun, and we love the convivial atmosphere they create, so keep an eye out for dates and times.

Even though we listen to your feedback and track our sales, we want to be sure that we’re providing the items you want us to, so in the next week or so we’re going to send you a survey to see what other goods and services you’d like us to provide.

Our planned winter hours are going to be Tuesday through Saturday from

10:00 AM  – 6:00 PM. We look forward to see you.

Cheers!

Good Morning Gloucester

Facebook

Duckworth Bistrot

Isn’t March supposed to be the month that "comes in like a lion"?

In Gloucester, however, and especially here at the store, October has fit that definition.

There was no better indication that our town, with all of its tourist attractions, is back in the hands of the locals than the happy throng that gathered here last Wednesday evening for our first Wine Tasting of the fall.  We lost count, but we think we greeted about 60 old and new friends during the course of the two hour reception and tasting. Someone from Annisquam said the ebullient atmosphere reminded her of Chowder Day.

We’ll be continuing that tradition, but on Wednesdays, so check the Web site and our e-mails for invitations to upcoming Wednesday evening wines and times.

Autumn is the season of bounty and abundance, and you’ll find it’s in full swing here. The shelves are brimming with new merchandise that we’ve sourced from artisinal purveyors both in New England and across the country.  We’re stocking up on all the goods that people tell us they want both for gift giving and for their own pantries as the days get shorter and colder.

Cheese of the Month

Cabot Clothbound Cheddar Cheese

Voted "Best Cheese In North America" and

continuing a long line of fruitful culinary collaborations is this clothbound cheddar from a collective of Vermont’s finest cheesemakers. Cabot makes these 35 pound wheels from the pasteurized milk of Holstein cows and delivers them to the neighboring Cellars at Jasper Hill for aging and maturation. The end result of this promising partnership: a nutty, complex, and perfectly sharp cheddar that proves American cheesemaking has trully come of age. Pair it with a fruity Cabernet or a big Brown Ale.

Wine of the Month

Cono Sur – Colchagua Valley, Chile

It is appealing in its rich and deep bright red colour, and has a complex and developed nose that is governed by sweet wild fruit aromas, were notes of cherries and berries are enhanced by slight toasty hints. This Pinot definitely has a personality of its own. It’s tasteful, with soft tannins and an excellent structure. Cono Sur is a great option for stuffed pastries (with chicken or vegetables for example), and all sorts of quiches. Pinot Noir is one of the most versatile varieties there is. It can go well with fish, or with poultry, pork and lamb. Creamy sauces and spicy seasonings are also an excellent choice.

Thanksgiving Day Menu

We don’t want to say the word "Holiday" but Thanksgiving will be here before you know it. Thanksgiving is the time to gather with your friends and family, turn on some football, and enjoy your Thanksgiving meal. duckworth beach gourmet has a time savings menu so you can do just that – relax and enjoy. Honor your family traditions with some traditional foods or add a new dish that you would like to introduce. Either way, we do all the prep work, you just reheat it.

Duckworth Beach Gourmet Newsletter

Dear Joey,

It’s official! Today is the first day of summer for the Northern Hemisphere. Gloucester’s official summer begins mid-week with Fiesta. In a way, summer in Gloucester both speeds up and slows down. The energy and activities increase, but driving around town on sunny weekend days can be frustrating. We all tend to plan our trips around peak beach times.

Duckworth’s Beach Gourmet is expanding our hours. Look below for the new times, and remember that the store remains open on Thursday evenings until 8:00 p.m. for our community wine tastings.

Everybody in Gloucester seems to have a favorite sausage sub, and we’ve met most of the folks who believe, as we do, that Trupianos is the best. Stop by and check it out. Mike

Ciaramitaro makes the sausage right in our kitchen and it’s the real deal. We’ll make you a sandwich or you can buy the sausage fresh and create your own masterpiece at home.

Ken Duckworth’s prepared foods continue to astonish. It seems every day there’s a new seasonal offering. He’s featuring more summer foods – like chicken salads and salmon.

St. Peter’s Fiesta

Cheese and Wine

The 2010 annual St Peter’s Fiesta is now upon us. Stop by and feed your appetite with a Trupianos sausage sub with peppers and onions, grilled outside the store on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We think that our store may be a quiet and cool oasis during Fiesta, and like all good oases. We’ll have plenty of cold beverages ready to go too.

New Store Hours

Summer is here and beach season has arrived. Going boating or heading to the beach? Come by and pick up sandwiches, salads or beer and wine to make your day complete. Call in your order and we’ll have it ready for you to pick up.

Tuesday – Thursday

11:00 am – 6:00 pm

Friday and Saturday

9:00 am – 6:00 pm

Sunday

9:00 am – 3;00 pm

Wine of the Month

CristalinoCristalino Brut Sparkling Wine

Cristalino Cava Brut has a bright green-gold color and shows fine bubbles. It has a pleasant nose of green apples, peaches, toast, flowers, cinnamon and herbs. Crisp and bright, dry with medium-full body, this sparkler offers rich flavors of apples, figs, lemon, roasted almonds and pie crust. It is fruit-forward and balanced, with a clean, lemony finish.
Enjoy Cristalino Cava Brut as an apéritif and with chicken salad, shellfish, paella, filet of sole and fruit desserts.

Cheese of the Month

Cheese and WineDelice de Bourgogne – Triple Cream

Delice de Bourgogne from France is a tall triple cream cow’s milk cheese that is enriched with cream. The remarkably pungent (somewhat moldy) aroma of Delice de Bourgogne belies the velvet-smooth texture and subtle taste of this cheese. Similar to the classic Brie both in appearance and texture, this sumptuous cheese delivers an extra triple-cream punch to the palate. Its outside is yellowish-white in color, with a soft, chalk-like dusty rind. The smell can be overpowering at first, but adds a playful contrast to the sweet and creamy interior. For a most memorable Delice experience, procure the freshest French baguette, slice and toast. Spread some Delice and feast on this fantastically simple treat before another hectic day commences.

Drink Suggestions: Serve with Champagne, a slightly acidic Riesling, or fruity Sauternes.

Wine Tasting

Champagne and CheeseChampagne and Chocolate!

This month we will be tasting some Champagne and Prosecco along with some fresh strawberries and chocolates.

Thursday, June 26th from 6:00 pm to 8 pm

Our wine tastings on Thursday evenings at 6:00 p.m. continue to increase in popularity. The store remains open during those hours as well.

Keep an eye out for our catering truck. We’re just putting the finishing touches on it, and any day now, you’ll start seeing it parked at key locations around Cape Ann. We’ll stock it with box lunches, prepared food and soft drinks.  If you have suggestions about where we should be, let us know.

Before we go, we can’t resist a little bragging. Duckworth’s Bistrot, the restaurant that Ken and Nicole Duckworth have at 197 East Main Street, once again has received the Zagat Guide’s highest rating for food in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Yes, it beats out all those fancy places in Boston. It’s a treasure, and we’re lucky to have it here in our town. This time of year it’s best to plan ahead and make reservations.

We’re looking forward to serving you.

Sincerely,

John Lamirande

Duckworth Beach Gourmet Roasted Pork Sandwich

You know how somethings look good but they just taste alright?  The Roast Pork Sandwich at Duckworth Beach Gourmet looks fantastic and tastes out of this world!  This may be my favorite sandwich in Gloucester.

Ken Duckworth Prepares Line Caught Gloucester Cod on Taste of the Times

Click the picture to watch Ken Duckworth of Duckworth's Bistrot and Duckworth Beach Gourmet prepare a remarkably easy gourmet dish.

Ken explains that he does not just cook, he composes a meal based on contrasting flavors in order to fully engage your taste buds. Whenever possible he also uses ingredients that are from local waters and farms. In this recipe he utilizes a line caught cod from a Gloucester fisherman and makes a celery root puree similar to mashed potatoes.”]<a href=”http://food.gloucestertimes.com/?

Cheese of the Month

Gruyere

Gruyère is sweet but slightly salty, with a flavor that varies widely with age. It is often described as creamy and nutty when young, becoming with age more assertive, earthy, and complex. When fully aged (five months to a year) it tends to have small holes and cracks which impart a slightly grainy mouthfeel. Gruyère is generally known as one of the finest cheeses for baking, having a distinctive but not overpowering taste. In quiche, gruyère adds savoriness without overshadowing the other ingredients. It is a good melting cheese, particularly suited for fondues, along with Vacherin and emmental. White wines, such as riesling, pair well with gruyère. This pairs well with the Featured Wine Nero D’Avola

What’s New At Duckworth Beach Gourmet From John Lamirande

Thanks to you the first few weeks of Duckworth Beach Gourmet have been terrific. Thank you for coming by and giving us your e-mail address. We promise we won’t deluge you with mail, but we wanted you let you know what’s new and give you a head’s up on what may surprise you the next time you visit.  We had thought we’d have a “soft opening” and kind of sneak onto the scene while we worked out the kinks, but it was a lot “louder” than we expected, and we thank you for that.  Here’s what’s new:

BEER & WINE
Cross your fingers! We are expecting to have our license to sell beer and wine by the middle of November. We have been doing our research (it’s a tough job), and as soon as we can we’ll be offering a careful selection of American craft and imported beers as well as a varied inventory of wine from many countries. Those of you who frequent Duckworth’s Bistrot will recognize some of our favorite wines from the restaurant as well as many new choices.

“TURKEYS ON THE FLY” FOR THANKSGIVING
Last Thanksgiving, Duckworth Beach Gourmet cooked Thanksgiving for almost 200 people on Cape Ann. We offered “Turkeys on the Fly”. This year, we’ll once again provide this service to our customers, roasting locally sourced birds which are brined first to guarantee tasty, moist meat. In addition, you’ll be able to choose from a list of classic Thanksgiving side dishes as well as pies for dessert. Happy customers last year told us that having Duckworth beach Gourmet do the classic dishes allows them to focus on special family recipes. We’ll have the menu available at the store. Place your orders early!

MADAME CATHERINE’S MAGIC SANDWICHES
Word is out that our sandwiches are amazing, and we’re already seen lines at lunchtime. If you’re in a hurry, you can call us with your order in advance and your delicious sandwich will be ready. As soon as we can, we’ll put the sandwich on our Web site . . . which means we need to find the time to create a Web site. So far, our best selling sandwiches are the Pork sandwich, Lamb sandwich and the Tomato/Mozzarella Panini.

EXPANDED OFFERINGS OF PREPARED FOODS
If you’ve stopped by the store in the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed that we’re constantly introducing new items in our cases of prepared foods. We’re eager for your feedback, so the next time you’re in, please tell us what you like and what you’d like us to offer.

If you’re planning a party and would like something special, let us know. With just a little notice, we’re happy to create a custom menu for you.

. . . AND SPEAKING OF SPECIAL REQUESTS, WE HAVE GLUTEN FREE CRACKERS
Several customers asked if we could find gluten-free products, and we’re happy to tell you that the first to arrive are some yummy crackers made entirely of cheese. You won’t feel as if you’re compromising at all with these.

HOURS OF OPERATION
We are open from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. from Tuesday through Saturday. Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

GIFT CERTIFICATES
Folks have already started thinking about the holidays and have asked us if we’ll be offering gift certificates. Yes, we will! They’re in the works and should be available at the store in the next week or two.

We hope you’ll stop by the market often. Let us know what works for you and what doesn’t. We’re here to serve you and to make your life on Cape Ann easier and tastier.

Bon Appétit!
