North Shore Kid Comes Through Again- Beginning Winter Birding At Halibut Point State Park

You know there is one singular site that when I’m trying to figure out something to do with the kids other than sitting around the house playing board games- North Shore Kid

The way Bill and Kelly have the site laid out, easy to navigate, highly searchable and always with direct links to the Children activity host’s website.  It’s just such a treasure trove of information for busy parents looking for fun educational stuff to do with their family.

So the kids are on a three day weekend and The Mrs is great about making sure they get outside but had been scratching her head as to what to do.  I go to the handy NorthShoreKid link in the sidebar on GMG, and lo and behold North Shore Kid is featuring a story about Beginning Birding at Halibut State Park.

Perfect, dress warm, get outside, see some cool migratory birds that happen to be stopping off at Halibut Point State Park and then hit one of the local coffee shops for some hot chocolate.

#Boom!  Thank you North Shore Kid.

Click here to go to North Shore Kid and get all the details for yourself and while you’re there bookmark it.  It’s definitely bookmark worthy!

Beginning winter birding is held on the 3rd Sunday of each Winter month

When was the last time you had fun at your dentist office?

No MUZAK up in this mother.  They’re playing classic hits, the dentist chairs have use controlled heated and massage elements, you don’t have to put that nasty mold in your mouth with the gooey stuff making you want to gag when they take x-rays or making molds, they do their stuff with the latest digital imaging.

The staff is young, hip and friendly.  The décor is straight out of Restoration Hardware.  The place is straight buttah.  Check them out unless you prefer old school dentistry and directly correlate how much pain you have to endure with the level of dental care you receive.

New England Foundation for the Arts

Catherine Ryan writes-

Hi Joey,

The New England Foundation for the Arts monthly bulletin features “Public Art Calls”. Go to their fantastic website—it’s chock-full of cultivating creative arts throughout New England and beyond. Besides their major funding and linking, they also feature opportunities beyond their organization. The Committee for the Arts was thrilled to see that the Gloucester HarborWalk Public Art Challenge is listed in the January blog. Thank you NEFA. It’s great to see what’s out there and for Gloucester to be in the mix. Check out the range of art projects that municipalities seek. Sign up for their newsletter or whatever social media platform jazzes for you—they’re plugged in!

Brewing Up Some Glosta Joe’s Perfect Storm Using A Keurig Single Cup Reusable Coffee Filter

At the dock I have a $20 cheapo coffee maker for when I can’t get to The Lone Gull or Cape Ann Coffee or Pleasant St but at the house The Mrs had been hinting that she wanted a Keurig.

So being the romantic guy I am I bought her one for Christmas and also bought the Reusable K-Cup Coffee filter.  I hadn’t had much luck with coffee I like from those K-Cups and as you all know I’m a huge fan of Gloucester based coffee brewers Glosta Joe’s (no affiliation to me or our business at the dock BTW)  I just really like Misti and Larry’s Perfect Storm coffee.  I should mention you can buy it at Mamie’s Kitchen or The Cave Downtown or on their website www.glostajoes.com

Anyway let it be known that the reusable K-Cup filter worked flawlessly.  No mess, easy cleanup, much less cost per cup of coffee than buying those K-Cups from Keurig and I get to enjoy Glosta Joe’s Perfect Storm or my Starbucks Café Verona when I’m in the mood for something a little more chocolaty and strong.

If you haven’t tried Glosta Joe’s Perfect Storm and like a nice mellow breakfast blend that isn’t trying to kick you in the face, get down to the Cave or Mamie’s Kitchen or order up some online.

I figure after a couple of bags of buying your own coffee and brewing it in the Keurig using the reusable filter you will be saving money over the cost of buying those fairly expensive disposable one use K-Cups.

St Lucia vs Playa del Carmen vs Turks

A few words about these three warm January locations.

Once the grueling 7 day a week season is over we book a warm climate beach destination for our January vacation.  Over the past 4 years it was St Lucia twice, last year Playa del Carmen and this year Turks.

I trust the Mrs’ vacation planning skillz implicitly.  She uses Trip Advisor to drill down on the best intersection of price/value/nice accommodations.  It hasn’t failed us yet.  I assume most of you have heard of Trip Advisor but for those who haven’t, it’s user based ratings and recommendations on just about every vacation property under the sun.  From big mega-resorts to tiny boutique hotels.  The benefit of using Trip Advisor as a guide is that when you get hundreds or thousands of user-based reviews and ratings it helps you drill down quickly on the types of places that suit your taste and/or budget without the influence of huge marketing budgets from the mega-factory travel resorts.

Big huge resorts have big huge marketing budgets and are comping travel agents or building into their pricing structure all those marketing costs to try to lure you in to their joint but what we’ve found is that the smaller hotels offer good value and the Mrs can’t stand to travel with the masses in buffet lines or fight for spots around pools with hundreds of people at mega-resorts.

So using Trip Advisor is my number one piece of advice when doing your vacation planning.  If you have no confidence in your ability to read and process what other people have said or how 5 star ratings are better than 1 star ratings, use a Travel Agent instead.

Anyway.  For my money from March to May or September through December there’s no better beach destination to escape the Northeast than Naples Florida.  Warm, Clean, Safe, Awesome Beaches, Tons Of Restaurants, Tons of Shopping, Tons of Attractions.  It’s got it all, there are a ton of flights, it’s a quick flight.  I could go on and on about the virtues of Naples Florida.

But in January and February you aren’t guaranteed beach weather anywhere in the continental US.  You’re really not guaranteed beach weather in Playa Del Carmen either but your chances are greatly increased of being able to swim in the ocean there over any place in the US in January or February.

So now for the differences between the three winter destinations we’ve been in the past four years- St Lucia, Playa del Carmen and Turks.

The Grub:

All three have had fantastic dining options.  Wide ranges of different kinds of foods.  Of the three Playa had the most and by far the least expensive.  St Lucia in Rodney Bay where we stayed had plenty and the prices for dinner were surprisingly about the same as eating out in Gloucester be it Passports or Lat 43 or The Duck.  The food here in Turks has been outstanding but you have to close your eyes when the bill comes because it is very very expensive.  Example- the nice, recommended casual tiki-bar-esque Somewhere Café we got two pulled pork taco inners, two coors lights, and two orange stoli tonics with a slice of Key Lime pie and it came to $100.  Then add $10 cab ride back and forth for a $120 dinner.  That’s steep for comfort food in my book.  In Rodney Bay St Lucia and Playa you can walk to dozens of great restaurants.  There are dozens of great restaurants here but they’re not congregated.

The Beaches:

The water here in Turks is just like the water in Playa- that turquoise blue, warm, crystal clear water that you could float in all day long.  The sand like powder.  I’d rank them both 9s.  The beaches in Rodney Bay St Lucia were nice but there were lots more tourists on them.  they were a bit more scenic with the hills surrounding the bay with lush vegetation as well.  I’d rank the beach at Rodney Bay a solid 8.  Nothing to sneeze at but just a step behind.  It should be noted that St Lucia is really lush with flora being in a Rain Forest and Turks is flat with lots of scrub.   The most beautiful beach I’ve been was Horseshoe Beach in Bermuda.  Little lagoons, and rock formations and clear water, and powdery sand.  A nice spot but not swimming weather warm in January or February.  Highest concentrations of Europeans wearing banana hammocks- St Lucia by a mile.  This is a positive and a negative.  The positive is that you get to make fun of dudes wearing banana hammocks, the negative- you have to look at dudes wearing banana hammocks.

Turks:

Reduit Beach St Lucia:

Playa Del Carmen:

The Attractions:

There is probably the most number of quality outdoor attractions if you want to be active in St Lucia (this could be wrong but it was our experience) Between Rainforest Segway Tours, Zip-lining, Snorkeling, Catamaran, the Castries marketplaces, and more.

Playa had the usual boating, snorkeling, parasailing stuff but they don’t have the Rainforest stuff.  Still plenty of stuff to do there and by far the most nightlife and shopping, with the awesome Fifth Avenue providing great people watching and dining/shopping.

Turks is ALL about relaxation.  Mellow, mellow, mellow.  There is the boating stuff, parasailing, snorkeling and such but the place is more spread out than Rodney Bay in St Lucia or Playa Del Carmen’s hotel/shopping district.  This can be a really good thing if all you want to do is unwind.  Playa is much more active and Rodney Bay falls somewhere in between.

If you plopped me down on the beach in Turks and told me I was on the beach in SW Florida I wouldn’t argue the point.  Playa Del Carmen definitely has it’s Mexican stamp on it and St Lucia has more of an island feel to its layout.

Overall Here’s How My Recommendations Would Play Out Regarding The Three Different Places For Warm Beach Destinations In January or February.

If you totally want to unplug and relax and do NOTHING- go to Turks with a buttload of dough.

If you want more of an eco-rainforest beach vibe with stuff to do and great dining go to St Lucia and stay at the Coco Palm. Highly rated and excellent value in St Lucia.

If you want beautiful beaches, and a little more excitement and Mexican flavor and great value go to Playa Del Carmen.

Feel free to ask questions.

Joanie On The Pony from Bob Lindberg

Joey: it’s Mike Lindberg’s brother BOB (the dentist)writing. Recently we had family from Tampa in town and showing them around Gloucester and I wanted to show them the
very nice Joan D’Arc statue . When asked “why does Gloucester have this statue ?” I thought, you know I do not know but I will find out ; I did know the artist was from the area. Much to my surprise I learned many very interesting facts besides that the sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington came from causeway studio at “hole in the wall” at Goose Cove where we passed a million times as kids heading out to the Annisquam and the Bay.

I do know some refer to her as Joanie on the Pony affectionately and somewhat naively irreverently ( goodmorninggloucester) and always wondered why French statue and not Swedish,Portugese or Italian.

Among the surprising facts I have found thanks to internet:
1) horse was modelled from the biggest Gloucester firehorse at the time in pre WWI days
2) her studio was the house at the hole in the wall as we called it;family owned the house aka first marine biology field station there ;she designed plaque on the rock
3) figure model of Joan was her niece
4) in the art contest many liked her worked but she didn’t win because it was thought a man must have helped her -it was so good
5) Joan is holding up sword before battle asking for God to help her in leading the men in the quest to rid France of the English;later burned at the stake at 19,later sainted
and wore men’s clothing because as she said “no voice told her to not wear men’s clothing”
6) There are several copies of statue one other in NY and 3 in France -Gloucester’s is #2
7) It was given to Gloucester after WWI as a special thank you to all US forces who helped France kick Germany out of  France
particularly men from Gloucester in the Battle of Belleau Woods 1918 where the marines fought so bravely they earned the nickname said to have been given to them by
the Germans ” teufelshunden-hound devils or hellhounds ” for their tenacity and where a famous marine corps officer ‘s response to request from the French fighting alongside to retreat under the heavy fire from the Germans was  “Retreat? We just got here!”
8) at that Battle which was greatest battle since Appomattox where US soldiers fought includes men from Gloucester- local Gloucester man Lester Waas seehttp://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/30873-show-tell-wwi-5th-marine-co-cdrs-kia-group-dsc-navy-cross/who was last surviving officer none the less led a fatal charge of marines to capture a German machine gun and won several medals for bravery see following and the first Medal of Honor for WWI was given to a marine for bravery  surprisingly for helping wounded while under fire a dentist Alexander Gordon Lyle from Gloucester won the medal of honor for bravery http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Gordon_Lyle  also veteran A Piatt Andrew who name is on 128 bridge .

So after learning this I will look at Joanie on the Pony with well earned affection and appreciation and gratitude . Regards Bob Lindberg

The Library and Librarians Are Flat Out Some Of The Greatest Local Resources Going- Poll

image

As I was preparing my list of books to take on vacation there was one I had at the top of that list- Adam Carolla’s Not Taco Bell Material.  Last year in Playa del Carmen I read his first book In Fifty Years We’ll All Be Chicks and was laughing with every turn of the pages.

No luck on the shelves locally, I headed to Barnes and Noble where it was also out of stock and since I was leaving in two days time there was no chance of ordering it in time to take it on vacation.

So the Mrs suggests ordering it to read on my iPad.  While she has a tendency to not take care of her electronics I don’t like taking mine to the beach.  Sand and saltwater and suntan lotion- just way too much chance of messing stuff up.  However when looking online at the Library inventory of availability I see my book available in hardback edition.

I place the book on hold at 7:30AM. Show up at 10:00AM and ask for the book.  It hadn’t been pulled from the shelf yet but the librarian (total unsung hero) walks around from behind the desk, goes and finds it for me, hands it to me and I straight up walk out.  With a $25 book.  For free.  Just by showing up! I gots it for three weeks.

Customer service?  You betcha!  With a smile.

I thanked him and told him I appreciate his service to the community.

Twenty Five Dollars Savings In My Pocket.

This is not to mention to the free museum passes that are always available, the cds you can take out and burn to your iTunes collection listen to before returning, art exhibits, lecture series, free wifi, ect, ect, ect…

Point is, the library isn’t just a place for the homeless to hang out once the shelter boots them out for the day.  It’s probably one of the greatest resources in the community and it’s free.  If you end up on the positive end of savings and all these resources, please consider giving back and supporting the library. http://www.sawyerfreelibrary.org/

Are You Not Entertained?

Are you kidding me?  Would you just look at this one day’s worth of content provided to you here on GMG?

Listen, there are glossy magazines that only come out quarterly around here that don’t provide what we provide in a single day.  Glossy magazines that sell tens of thousands in ads, with paid staff, that take three months to put out a publication that I’d argue we could stack our content up against on a single day and we’re banging it out for you 365 days a year.

There are NO, ZERO, NADA media outlets providing what the team of Good Morning Gloucester contributors are putting out on a daily basis.

Harbor Cove Dental To Open January 7th On Main Street!

Hello Joey, I’m Leif Bakland and am new to reading and visiting GMG. I’ve lived in the Fort for almost 15 years and operate a Dental practice in Nbpt, where I’ve been for 32 years. I have been looking for an opportunity to open a practice in Gloucester for the last several years since this is where my wife and I call home. Several of my patients who make the drive to Nbpt to see me have asked me when I’ll be opening an office in Gloucester. I’ve signed a lease with the Cape Ann Savings  and after 5 months of construction, will open for business next Monday the 7th of January!

The address is, 123 Main St., Gloucester, 2nd floor right over ” Kid’s Unlimited “.  The E-mail address for now is: harborcovedental@gmail.com, a web site is being produced now. For almost two years now I’ve been working on this project, and I can’t say enough about the Quality of people I’ve been involved with. It’s exciting to finally be opening in Gloucester. The office phone # is : 978-865-3360
Thanks Joey for any help you can give me. Regards, Leif

P&V’s LOL #7: You’re freezing when it’s colder than your age

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit

Of course, this LOL is only true for those of us who use the temperature scale developed by the inventor of the mercury thermometer, Mr. Fahrenheit.

This Law of Life, was inspired by Kevin Ricci of The Village Restaurant in Essex, whose answer to my question about why he always vacations in warm climates was, “I just don’t like when it’s colder than my age.”

It didn’t take me long to realize that Kevin was on to something.  You can easily test this law by asking yourself at what temperature do you feel like you’re freezing.  As predicted, that temperature (for me) is right about my age, which is considerably warmer than either the air or water will be tomorrow, hence the reason I will NOT be taking the plunge.  (There’s part 1 of your answer to this post, Joey.)

Last year Vickie took the plunge, but she’s a year older now.  More importantly, she’s a lot wiser, so she will not be taking the plunge either (part 2 of the answer).  Now the Zip Line Kid, is certainly young enough not to feel freezing in 45 degree water, but his commentary in yesterday’s video was so good that he’ll be filming instead of plunging (part 3 of the answer).  So we’ll bring donations to the Open Door, a camera, a commentator and plenty of enthusiasm for those young enough and/or crazy enough to plunge tomorrow.

But before we even think about tomorrow, we just have to point out just how much music is available tonight MORE THAN 70 SHOWS TO CHOOSE FROM!   See the full NYE schedule here.

Here’s a wintry video from 25 years ago to get you into the NYE and plunge spirit:

These girls ROCK, but their version omits the 2nd half of the bridge from Simon & Garfunkel’s original.  Does anybody know what those lyrics are?  Here’s some help:

This is 40

If you want to see a film that will make you LOL, go see This is 40. I loved it, my husband not so much. He had trouble empathizing with the characters because they are fairly dishonest with each other. I on the other hand found a certain truthfulness in the characters imperfections and lack of honesty,

The film could really be titled This is the Apatows at 40 because Judd Apatow, the film’s creator, cast his real life wife, Leslie Mann, and their daughters, Iris and Maude Apatow, in the lead roles. I think it is very cool that the family works together on films and imagine the bonds created are rock solid; antithetical to the more typical Hollywood working family lifestyle, where all the family members are running in opposite directions. One of my best friends lives in Hollywood Hills and works in the film industry in Hollywood, and I know this to be true from speaking with her about the daily struggles of being a mom while working in the industry.

If you go, don’t miss Melissa McCarthy’s hysterical outtake after the credits have rolled.

This is 40 now playing at Loews

New Years Rockport Eve is right around the corner

New Years Rockport EveDon’t have buttons yet?  Here’s where to get them:

In Rockport:
John Tarr Store, Main St.
Smith hardware & Lumber at the Lumber Desk
Toad Hall Bookstore, Main St.

In Gloucester:
Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, Commercial St.
House of Raven, Main St.
Gloucester Music, Main St.

Here’s a list of the live music (dozens of choices).  The whole shebang goes from 6pm to midnight and is one of the best entertainment values of the year.  You can download a map and complete schedule (in table format) here.  Plus if the weather cooperates (which it just might) you can see the moon, Jupiter and its moons, and galaxies so far away they’ll convince you that you really are as insignificant as you thought — a great way to begin the new year.  The Zip Line Kid and I are still talking about how much fun we had looking through the telescopes set up by the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club at Dock Sq.

Last year we were too late to get in to see Cape Ann Big band at Shalin Liu.  We won’t make that mistake this year.  Here’s a sample of what we missed:

Plenty of opportunities to get into the party spirit tonight (see complete live music listings here).  Might be a good time to check out  Mike O’Connell and his excellent band at Minglewood starting at 9pm.
