Mary Kate Canavan’s 9th Grade Honors Class Poem Series- Kenneth Wheeler

Art isn’t just painting.  There are many ways people create and here I’d like to share some of the poems that Mary Kate Canavan sent in from her GHS 9th Grade Honors Class.

Kenneth Wheeler

Gloucester glooms
Peninsula like a cocoon
Fish drying, the smell of business
Seagulls squawk, church bells you can’t possibly miss
Hardworking citizens, but not all quite exactly equal at heart
Born elsewhere, but brought back soon right after, not to again depart
Watched as he left out the door, assured he would return again
Swiftly taken away against my will by dreadful, unfaithful men
Standing tall, with stance shaped like a C
Laid back’s the way to be
Fluctuating weather is unpredictable
Gloucester’s like copper; it’s easily conductible

seARTS Wearable Arts Show Enters 4th Year & Expands

seARTS Wearable Arts Show Enters 4th Year & Expands
Adds new fiber artists and national outwear designer

GLOUCESTER, Mass. – The seARTS Wearable Arts group presents its fourth annual show to coincide with Gloucester’s historic Middle Street Walk. The Show and Sale begins with a Friday night reception and continues throughout the day December 11th. The Wearable Arts Show provides a unique opportunity to showcase local jewelers, fiber artists, and designers – while at the same time benefits the Sawyer Free Library and the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (seARTS). The show is unique as it is run by the artists who each contribute to making it a warm and welcoming event. The venue itself, the historic wing of the library, provides an intimate setting for art lovers and holiday shoppers to mingle with the artists, try on “wearable art” and enjoy music, food, and community spirit. The seARTS show continues to grow as the only event on the North Shore dedicated to wearable art.

Returning jewelry artists include Meredith Anderson, Lee Cunningham, Jacqueline-Ganim-DeFalco, Susan Kenna, Candy Marshall, Rebecca Williams, Beth Williams, Jan Weinshanker & Judy Wright. Returning fiber artists are Margaret Derby, Camilla MacFadyen and Nina Lapchyk who works out of Winchester. They will be joined by three new textile artists, Beverly Gillett and Jenny Beauchamp, who have been working in different surface design techniques and Marlene Cann who works in a wide variety of fabrics.

For the first time, the seARTS group welcomes the designer Maralyce Ferree represented by Mike Cianci. Maralyce Ferree recently moved its shop to Amesbury and was invited to join the show to add its colorful outwear to complement the collections of jewelry, scarves, and shawls. Maralyce Ferree has provided innovative design since 1984. Starting with one fleece jacket for a friend, to a collection of fashionable outerwear sold throughout the United States and parts of Canada. To add to the overall spirit of the event, Maralyce Ferree will offer special pricing for the show. Collectively, the group will offer something for every taste and price point – from lush velvet scarves, to intricately beaded jewelry made from hand-made glass beads, precious gems, felt, exotic beads, and semi-precious stones. And more fabulous gift items include – sachets, table “wear,” sea glass hair accessories; elegant purses and belts, charming children’s clothes; and seaweed block prints on scarves and T-shirts. The show is a feast for the eyes for the range of creativity and colors on display. The Friday evening reception will engage all the senses as each artist brings a favorite appetizer and Carol McIntyre graces the show with harp music.

The 14 artists along with local businesses have also donated a piece of their work or a gift certificate to a corollary raffle fundraiser to benefit the Library. Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco, one of the organizers comments, “The Library has been a tremendous partner, each year working more closely with us to expand the show and share the treasures of the Saunder’s House with the community. All the artists are enthusiastic about returning to this wonderful place.”

All donations will be displayed in the glass case across from the front desk of the library beginning mid-November. Tickets $2 or 3 for $5 are available from any participating artist or at the Library desk during the weeks leading up to the show. The Wearable Arts show is organized and supported by the artist members of seARTS. 15% of all sales will be donated to seARTS

The Hive and Cross Fit Cape Ann Wish You A Happy Black Friday

Good Black Friday to You!

I’m sure most of you are just returning from the 4am sales and are navigating through mailboxes full of junk mail of coupons for round 2. We here at the Hive thought it would be a good time to jump in on the action and send you a newsletter that may give you a break from the onslaught of deals and steals.

We know we have been slacking off on keeping you in touch with what is going on at the Hive the past 6 months and for good reason. Jon & Karen have been really busy with their new venture of creating CrossFit Cape Ann. Kind of a funny pairing of passions between Art & Athletics… we agree…but you gotta follow your passions and the process of starting the Hive has been a great reference point in our quest to start the most unique, community driven gym on Cape Ann. That being said check us out online at www.crossfitcapeann.com or check the interview Jon did with Capt. Joe for Good Morning Gloucester here and come in for a class to check it out!

Because we have the space with the new gym…Surf Movie night is back!!!!! We are really excited as this was the best community aspect of our old studio space inRockport. We are planning to have surf movie night Friday December 10th at 8pm at CrossFit Cape Ann 7 Parker St. Gloucester. You know the routine as in BYOB and bring a beach chair and friends. We haven’t decided what we are showing yet so stay tuned via the Hive or CrossFit websites.. We may also have a slideshow from our recent trip to the Sierra Nevada’s as well. So come on down.

And if you haven’t finished off your holiday shopping, remember that The Hive is your source for local non-traditional art and craft. We have new work from California Artist John Culqui, new prints form Coco Berkman, new t-shirts from both Birdswell and The Salty Garage, new hand painted driftwood signs by Karen Conant and a bunch more from all your favorite Hive Artists. Come check us out and keep in mind that 15% of all sales go the Art Haven’s programming.

Gloucester fishing
Waves crashing waves thrashing
Fishy fresh salty and crisp
Gusts of wind blowing right in
Strange woman who takes her dog to look for rocks
Catching a blue fish wanting an hour on the clock
Waiting for that fish to come in, starting to grin
Giving up is never a win
Lightning, thunder, windy rain
Come to Gloucester and feel the pain

Mary Kate Canavan’s 9th Grade Honors Class Poem Series-Kacie Quinn

Art isn’t just painting.  There are many ways people create and here I’d like to share some of the poems that Mary Kate Canavan sent in from her GHS 9th Grade Honors Class.

Kacie Quinn

Gloucester crashes
Horizon a glass bottle
Sour scent of fish and pizza
Seagulls cawing; familiar greetings; the sea breeze whistles
Eccentric sorts with carrying personalities; not one just like another
Little sister comes home. I am diagnosed with middle child syndrome
Dog comes into house. She pees on the floor
Trapped in school overnight. No way out. Plus monster.
Huge glasses; tight Just Keep Dancing sweatshirt; carries pencil
If you don’t imagine, nothing happens
Breeze changes with the seasons.
Ocean splashes, crashing violently against rocks.

Samatha Russell

Gloucester breeze
Island, surrounded by sea
smell of fish, taste of salt.
Waves crashing along the beach, oblivious seagulls screech.
On a summers day, all the kids come out to play.
“Almost there”! We both say, paddling to the greasy pole, each day.
Tired and breathless, we climb the ladder, we made it, laughter.
Friends and family aboard the ship, sailing away, I’m left.
Strong and happy, full of life and love.
Dream hard, work hard, live easy.
Smiles from the sun.
Gloucester Breeze

The Gloucester Sketchbook Project Update from eb

Gloucester Sketchbook Project Update from eb

BECAUSE of other various projects, I haven’t been able to work on my sketchbook for the past few weeks and thus there’s been a lack of updates. Sorry! So here’s a snippet of what I’ve started up with:

The hand written typography is something that I’m really excited about! I haven’t been terribly active with type in a long time, and it felt incredibly satisfying to do some hand lettering. Some are visuals that I copied by eye, just to get my craft back, but none are traced from the source. The ‘u’ in the pencil draft needs to be corrected though….its opposite slant is driving me crazy, sketch or no sketch.

Mary Kate Canavan’s 9th Grade Honors Class Poem Series- Autumn Zubricki

Art isn’t just painting.  There are many ways people create and here I’d like to share some of the poems that Mary Kate Canavan sent in from her GHS 9th Grade Honors Class.

Autumn Zubricki

Gloucester fishes
Scenery like a postcard
Fresh lobster with salty air
Old timers with tales of their childhood and the olden days
Searching for sea shells; Building pretty sand castles; Swimming in the waves
Moving on to high school; hoping I can find my way around
Running, searching, standing alone, no one can be found anywhere
Weathered skin from the sun; cooking something perfect
Check your heart, then go decide
Giant waves crashing down
Gloucester tells of a place far better than on a postcard

~Autumn Zubricki

Mary Kate Canavan’s 9th Grade Honors Class Poem Series- Anna Gray

Art isn’t just painting.  There are many ways people create and here I’d like to share some of the poems that Mary Kate Canavan sent in from her GHS 9th Grade Honors Class.

Mary Kate writes-

I found it!!! Hey Paul & Joey – sorry for the late response…I actually found the art rock last Saturday evening and have been busy trying to deliver a proper ‘Thank you’ to you both. I have been watching all summer and coveting each and every rock that has been found…and now I am the proud owner of one!!!!
I am a teacher at Gloucester High and we were just talking about oral history and how important it is in our culture. My 9th grade Honors class worked on poems and I wanted to share some with you. Joey – please know how much your efforts inspire and motivate those in our fair city. Paul – my student’s were teasing me, they could not believe how excited I was for finding this beautiful piece of art work! I am so blessed to look at the Paint Factory every day and now this rock will travel with me and the story with it. Thank you!
Okay, so here are some of the poems – I am not sure how much room you have to share but they were all inspired by both of you!

Anna Gray-

Gloucester sails
The shoreline like memories
Salty breezes float through lace stars
White waves collapse against the seaweed-sheltered rocks
Shadows of innocent children and their ignorant, naïve minds amble
Tragedies new and aged, reminiscing of the past, tears fall glaringly, leisurely
Generation of the young commence to lose their once high, amorous faith
Walk on a vacant path with no end, ceaselessly falling
White and sapphire draped over her judicious head
Loneliness is the most terrible poverty
Snow melting into sun
Cherished and forever known.

I’ll be featuring poems by Autumn Zubricki, Samatha Russell, Kacie Quinn, Matt Lane and Kenneth Wheeler each day this week at 3PM
