Well Lookey Here- Our EJ Is seARTS Artist of The Week!

seARTS Bass Rocks Art Loan Program

An interview with our Artist of the Week, E.J. Lefavour

How do you feel about being chosen for the Bass Rocks Art Loan Program?
Very excited.  This opportunity is allowing me to exhibit my work in a venue and to a segment of our population that I may not have been able to reach otherwise (unless they are regulars to Rocky Neck).  It is an honor to be in such great creative company, and I am grateful for the opportunity.

Pebble Beach through the Rearview Mirror, Mixed Media Photo Collage,
16" x 20". Click to enlarge.

What is your medium or area of creativity?  I am a painter, photographer, writer, illustrator.  Most recently I have been working with the over abundance of wonderful photos I have taken over the past few years and incorporating them into unique, three dimentional photo montages, which people are really enjoying.  I created about 50 of them over the winter, and the series is called "Gloucester: The Grit and the Glory", since most encompass images of rope, chains, rusted hulls of boats, nets and other images from the working seaport aspect of Gloucester, combined with the glory of that industry and of the natural beauty that surrounds us here, as well as the history.
How long have you been an artist?  I have been a working artist since 1991 after leaving the corporate world and making the decision to pursue my art full time.
Where do you get your inspiration?  Anywhere and everywhere around me.
Other than the  Bass Rocks Golf Club, where can we find your works? At my galler(ies) on Rocky Neck. Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery at 77 Rocky Neck Ave., Gallery 3 from May 15 to October 15, and at my winter gallery, up the stairs at 1 Wonson Street (behind Sailor Stan’s) from October to April.
What else would you like us to know?  I passionately love Cape Ann, Rocky Neck where I now reside year round, Annisquam were I lived in the winter for three seasons, East Gloucester and the Backshore, Eastern Point, paddleboarding, Good Morning Gloucester and all the people associated with it, and all the wonderful people I meet and have met since moving here.  I feel very blessed to be here.

Anne and Chris Lewis’ Whale…

Finella williams submits-

Good morning Joe,

I hope that you’re doing great.  I love your site and must admit I have not subscribed but will do so now!

Anne and Chris Lewis wanted us to share their Whale sculpture with you and Good Morning Gloucester.

They had a little gathering at their home this past Sunday for the purpose of naming the new addition to their family.  "Wally" was picked out of the 20 or so names.  So, per their request, I’m attaching a photo of Wally the Whale sculpture for you to post on your site.

It’s hand forged/welded and made entirely of Bronze and also has a water feature spouting from top.

Anne and Chris commissioned this piece from local Essex sculptor, Chris Williams (my husband, you probably imagined that).

You can also add his website link if you’d like… www.chriswilliamssculpture.com

Again, the Lewis’ thought that it would be fun to have this on Good Morning Gloucester.

Thanks Joe.

Origami class at The Hive tonight!

As previously announced, I will be teaching an origami class at the Hive tonight. I can tailor the content to the interests and needs of those present. We can do some nautically themed origami, including a variety of boats, and maybe a sea serpent (as in the photo above).

Or, have you bought an origami book or kit for yourself or a family member, only to have it get dusty on the shelf because no one can figure it out?  You are not alone! Bring it to the class, and I can teach the group how to read the diagrams and fold some models from the book!  It doesn’t matter how simple or complex the model is – I can help you understand what’s going on.  Sometimes, the problem is that the diagrams are  poorly done, or just plain wrong. I can help you over those obstacles!

As a final option, if there’s something you’d like to learn how to make, sign up for the course and let me know what you want to learn (and what your skill level is), by commenting on this post or by some other means. I will do my best to find something to suit your interest! I have over 100 origami publications in my personal library, and can also find a variety of instructions on the internet.

I hope to see you there!

Gloucester High Schol Lemonade Challenge

Dear Joey,

The Gloucester High School business departmet s doing a "lemonade challenge" based off a challenge from the first season of The Appretice. Each class picks a charty to donate all their profits to. My class, team name is G-Town’s Finest, is trying to raise over $1000 for Autism Speaks.I was wondering if you could post on the Good Morning Gloucester blog asking if any company or person was wlling to donate to the cause. If a company is willing to donate they could contact me at my email below. If any person is willing to donate they could come down to the locations of our lemonade stands. I will know later today where exactly our stands will be located. If you could post on the blog about us that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Zach Smith

Don’t Miss Momentum Gallery, only in Gloucester for a Short Time!

  • The talented Bailey Berry, a student at Gordon College, has put together a pop-up gallery for the next few weeks. The show is curated by Bailey and is comprised entirely of works from fellow students in area colleges Endicott, Montserrat & Gordon. Originally designed to be part of an initiative in Peabody to enliven empty storefronts downtown by placing pop-up galleries and other temporary installations, Bailey had to look for alternatives for the gallery after Peabody pulled the plug on the project. She searched for a home for the Momentum Gallery and found the ideal partner in The Hive here in Gloucester. Peabody’s loss is our gain, as the project features work in a variety of media by young artists offering a fresh perspective.
    The details:
    • The show runs opens this weekend, May 25th, at 6 o’clock at The Hive on Pleasant Street. Some great music is lined up and all this music and art and energy can be experienced for just $5. Or five bux, as they say at The Hive because they are so awesome they just spell stuff phonetically.
    • Momentum Gallery will be open 10 to 5, Monday through Friday, and Saturdays by appointment through June 15th. If you would like to partner with Momentum Gallery and donate your services for either the show’s run and or closing party, contact Bailey at momentumpeabody@gmail.com. And for more information on the show itself, the gallery’s partners and blog, please check out the website: www.momentumgallery.weebly.com

As a final option, if there’s something you’d like to learn how to make, sign up for the course and let me know today or early on Wednesday what you want to learn (and what your skill level is), by commenting on this post or by some other means. Fun at Khan Studio and the GMG Gallery

fun at khan studio and GMG Gallery

No one can say we don’t have lots of fun at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery at Madfish Wharf on Rocky Neck.  In case anyone is wondering what the bunch of us are doing – we’re downing these amazing jello shots made by Alicia Penderosa.

The gallery is now open and the first major event will be our Grand Opening Mug Up on Sunday, May 26th from 9:00am-11:30 or so.   Most galleries have their openings in the evening so they can feed you lovely little tidbits and ply you with alcohol to entice you to buy something.  Since this is Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, we’re going for a Good Morning grand opening with deviled eggs, cheesecake and mimosas (in memory of Evelyn), so some plying will take place along with good morning fun and food.  There will of course be coffee and tea for those who don’t imbide that early in the day – but as Wendie Demuth always said, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere.

Guest Artists Judith Monteferrante and Roger Salisbury

announcement_inside and outside_Judith Monteferrante 2013 copy

The first guest artists of the 2013 season at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery will be Judith Monteferrante and Roger Salisbury.  Their work is already hanging, so stop by any time to check it out.  Judith has some amazingly beautiful metal print still lifes, as well as a spectacular canvas giclee closeup photo of a peony, and a lovely bathing nude that you will have a hard time believing is not a pastel painting.  Roger’s powerful and moody pastel paintings will captivate and move you.  Their opening reception will be on Friday, June 7th from 5:00-8:00pm, so mark your calendars now.

Also, don’t forget the Khan Studio and Good Morning Gloucester Gallery grand opening Mug Up will take place on Memorial Day weekend Sunday, May 26th at 9:00am.

The art of negative thinking

largestWhat are your thoughts?

The art of negative thinking
From the PAINTERS KEY;
May 17, 2013
Dear P F,
Recently, I had the opportunity to look over the shoulders of two painters who were giving demonstrations on the same day. The first was almost deliriously positive and bubbly about his work, his wonderful life as an artist and his prior successes. Enthusiastic throughout, he shouted epiphanies and dispensed “empowerment” like rose petals at a wedding.

The second demonstrator spoke less and, when he did, it was mostly about problems he was having with the work–and other more worrisome ones that lay ahead. A couple of times he got himself into trouble–but he scratched his brain and was able to recover. Guess what–the gloomy malcontent did the better painting. We all applauded when he held it up. There were whistles. He didn’t even smile.

This understanding has now been backed up in a new book by former Indiana and Texas Tech college basketball coach Bob Knight, aided by Bob Hammel: The Power of Negative Thinking: An Unconventional Approach to Achieving Positive Results.
“Superiority and success doesn’t favor good effort or self-esteem,” says Knight, “and it definitely doesn’t hand out trophies for participation. The mentally precise and physically fit win, while the mediocre and obtuse take solace in hopeful cliches.”

Bob and Bob have come to the conclusion that if you’re perennially upbeat you’re just setting yourself up for defeat. The positive thinker, they think, has a chronic “no danger ahead” disorder. He’s so busy believing in himself that he’s blindsided by oncoming problems and his own shortcomings.

Success, it seems, favours rigorous self-criticism. Here are some other interesting items I gleaned from the book:
Never gloat. Don’t talk too much. Don’t seek praise. Failure is endemic. Success is being hard to please. Be intolerant of failure. The easiest person to fool is yourself. Know your weaknesses. Be tough. Never let scanty positives override glaring negatives. Don’t be a good loser. Don’t satisfy yourself by just knowing you can do it. Do it. And by the way, keep

God out of your equations:
“So when I hear a guy after a game-winning home run say or gesture that God was on his side,” says Bob Knight, “I think to myself, ‘He’s saying God screwed the pitcher.’ “

Best regards,
Robert Genn

PS: Positive wish: “The sun will come out tomorrow.” Negative reality: “Yeah, and it will flash brand-new daylight on the same old mess unless something is done to clean it up.” (Bob Knight)

Barbara Moody at the Cape Ann Museum

Barbara Moody at the podium 2
On May 12 at 2PM, Barbara Moody gave a presentation on “Finding Your Unique Voice as an Artist”. She spoke to a fairly large audience about her own experience as an artist, accompanied by a slideshow illustrating her artistic journey through a wide variety of themes and styles in her work. She also showed a sort of time-lapse video of herself doing a charcoal painting; it was fascinating to watch the work evolve and change radically before our eyes!

Aquatro Gallery Is Back To Rock The Neck For Summer 2013

AQUATRO_BLUE_PMS_7460_00F2F2

Aquatro Opens A Gorgeous New Gallery For Summer 2013 In Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District

After last year’s success, Aquatro Gallery returns to Rocky Neck for the 2013 summer season in a new, larger location with a carefully-selected group of works by talented artists they’ve invited.

Aquatro quickly established itself as a must-stop destination in Rocky Neck for tourists and regulars alike. This came as no surprise to returning artists/designer, Gigi Mederos, whose freshman year on the Neck saw her and partner, Stevie Black, running Adriana Mederos Studio and Gallery, a live-and-work space they serendipitously found after enjoying a two-week run as a guest  artist of Ejay Lefavour’s Khan Studio Gallery during summer 2011. Once again, like last year when they were a couple doors down the wharf at Gallery #6, Aquatro Gallery needs more room to grow.

Aquatro Gallery remains bright and inviting, with an even better selection of contemporary fine art, jewelry and artful accessories in its new location at 77 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gallery #4 – still on Madfish Wharf in the heart of the Rocky Neck Art Colony, where the high-season runs from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. This year Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer on the Neck and Aquatro Gallery will be open from Wednesday through Monday that weekend, from 12PM – 8 PM; their normal hours throughout the summer until Columbus Day.Catherine-McMurray_Mackersie-Copper-glazed_Ceramics_2012

Here is but a taste of what you can expect to find at Aquatro this year:

belle+me, the fun, flirty, French line of scarves and pendants created by Rocky Neck friends, Anne Malvaux and Lisa LeVasseur.

Todas Las Musas, silver and enamel jewelry from Alejandra González and Gela Mederos.

Tami Rodrig’s delightful earrings and pendants from Happy Art Studio make their Rocky Neck debut at Aquatro.

Elegant and functional Turning Grace Studio pottery by New England native and now Nashville ceramicist, Catherine McMurray.

The intelligently humorous and deceptively simple wire sculptures of Boston’s South End artist, Brian Murphy.

You will also find paintings by Ben MacAdam and Tom Nihan, mixed media constructions by Liz Horwitz, and Mary Bowles’ decorative mosaic mirrors will make you happy to catch glimpses of yourself throughout your day. Aquatro also introduces Glamourosa, beaded earrings by young Cambridge artist, Alisa Amador and new, first-editions of designs and products from Guatopo, the surface and textile design studio launched last year by Stevie Black and Gigi Mederos.
