Current Coalition members include (but are not limited to): City of Gloucester is one of Eight Towns and the Great Marsh, Essex County Greenbelt Association, Essex National Heritage Area, Ipswich River Watershed Association, Massachusetts Audubon Society, Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management’s ACEC Program, Parker River Clean Water Association, Cultural Alliance of the Lower Merrimack Valley, and The Trustees of Reservations.

On November 2 2017 David Brooks and Jason Burroughs re-installed the Action Inc public art mural, Harbor and Home, which was newly repainted by Burroughs.

Cole Herbst was the original artist of the Home and Harbor mural, installed in 2010. Herbst used spray paint, acrylics and markers. Fellow artists Jake Stafford and Giacomo Vorhees helped Herbst with the project, and Jason Burroughs was involved a bit, too. Burroughs and Herbst were students together in the Compass youth program, Action Inc. Burroughs and Herbst have been in contact about the condition of Harbor and Home and settled on the current solution. Herbst is living overseas and is pleased Burroughs revived the mural and its new iteration.

Rare Edward Hopper print The Lonely House fetched record auction price @SwannGalleries

The Edward Hopper etching The Lonely House was the star lot going into the sale and in the live auction last night. The print sold for $310,000 vaulting past its pre auction estimate of $150,000-$200,000.

Hopper’s Les Poilus circa 1915 surpassed its $15000-$20,000 pre-sale estimate as well, selling for $42,500. I’ve sold an impression of the Lonely House before but I’ve only scene Les Poilus in the Whitney collection.

The sale featured Old Master through Modern prints by American and European artists.

“The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to announce WWII Veterans: Portrait Photographs by Jason Grow, a special exhibition on view from October 27 – November 26, 2017. First shown at Gloucester City Hall in 2015, Grow’s portrait photographs of Cape Ann’s World War II veterans were enthusiastically received by audiences of all ages and walks of life. The exhibit makes an encore appearance at the Museum this autumn, offering visitors another opportunity to view these remarkable images as a group.

Admission is free throughout the exhibition run for veterans and all active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve.

On Saturday, November 11, in honor of Veterans Day, the Museum will be free and open to the public and Jason Grow will present a talk about the exhibit at 2:00 p.m. in the Museum’s auditorium.

The Cape Ann Museum is proud to participate in the national Blue Star Museum program. Blue Star Museums is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums across America. Featuring original illustrations from Virginia Lee Burton’s classic 1939 book Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, and antique toys from the museum’s collection, we have it all when it comes to construction: vehicles, building blocks, Erector Sets, puzzles, LEGOs, and more! There are also original illustrations by two current artists: Chris Van Dusen’s books If I Built a House and If I Built a Car, and Brian Lovelock’s books Roadwork, Construction, and Demolition.

Virginia Lee Burton, children’s book author/illustrator, Folly Cove textile designer and founder, resided and worked in Gloucester, MA, where she created some of America’s most popular and classic children’s picture books. Burton’s characters and stories have been enjoyed by children of all ages all over the world. She received the Caldecott medal in 1943 for The Little House. Other books include Katy and the Big Snow and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.

WWII poster, Loose Lips might Sink Ships  Seymour R Goff (“essargee“) From 1934-43, milions of New Deal and Works Progress Administration (WPA) posters (original silkscreens, woodcuts and lithos) were created from nearly 35, 000 designs for various government agencies. All the poster divisions were transferred to the War Department by 1942. Seagram sponsored this one.
On Wednesday, November 1, 2017, there was a hearing in Berkshire Superior Court concerning efforts to block the upcoming Sotheby’s sale of Berkshire Museum art. Judge John Agostini presided over the hearing. Apparently the plaintiff cases were not enough; the Attorney General’s office filed an emergency motion DURING yesterday’s two hour hearing. There was a large audience. More than one observer felt that the courtroom scene looked like a Norman Rockwell painting. Judge Agostini said he will make his decision soon.
Here’s the conclusion from The Berkshire Eagle article by Larry Parnass (they’ll be getting awards for their coverage):
Trustees acted unreasonably, she said, by treating the art collection as “fungible.”
The term refers to a commodity that can be traded for something else, such as cash.
Instead, Aladro said, the board turned away from its “core legacy” as a museum and took steps that will sever its connection to cultural institutions it needs to hold future exhibitions. “You ask what the museum did wrong,” Keating said to the judge. “They violated their own written policies.”  Briefs filed in the case show that trustees voted to sign a contract with Sotheby’s weeks before removing provisions from policies that prohibited selling art in the way it intends. Keating also accused trustees of secrecy. “They knew there would be pushback. They didn’t want to face this.” He pointed to an email sent last May by the trustees president, Elizabeth McGraw, that asked fellow trustees to keep quiet. The subject line of the email read, “Loose lips sink ships.” “They didn’t want this ship sunk,” Keating said.

Do you remember How much is that doggie in the window?

When I had a street level gallery with two big display windows, we’d change the art out nightly; it was a bit of fun competition. At least once weekly, a passerby or interested buyer would joke, “How much is that doggie in the window?” This little doggie wagging it’s tale at Schlichte on Pleasant was so cute!  (Patti Page video helped explain the reference to my kids.)

Berkshire Museum Nailbiter- Healy halts Sotheby’s…some

Norman Rockwell’s sons lobbied hard for the art to stay in Pittsfield, per the artist’s intent. One granddaughter penned a different opinion, a plea to George Lucas–a major Rockwell collector– hoping he’d acquire them for his future illustration museum. Sotheby’s has unveiled billboards. The museum is firm on selling.  Next steps?
