Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department responded to and extinguished a structure fire on Harvard Street on Friday afternoon.
On Friday, Feb. 10, at approximately 4:25 p.m., the Gloucester Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting smoke coming from a home at 10 Harvard St.
Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Rescue 1, Ladder 1, and Car 3 responded and arrived at the scene within minutes. Crews arrived to find a working fire burning under a porch of the home and quickly worked to get water on it.
The fire was knocked down by 4:37 p.m.
The origin and cause of the fire remains under investigation. There were no reported injuries. Damage was contained the home’s porch.
The Essex Fire Department covered Gloucester stations during the fire.
“Crews responded and knocked this fire down quickly, which is fortunate because gusty winds today could have made this fire grow rapidly if our response had not been as timely,” said Chief Smith.

Community theatre’s All-Stars will showcase talent in streaming performance

Proceeds to benefit Village Hall

The Annisquam Village Players, the country’s oldest continually running community theatre, will stream its annual winter Cabaret show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023, to benefit the upgrade of the Annisquam Village Hall’s auditorium for stage presentations.

Each winter the Annisquam Village Players, who’s history dates back to 1863, entertain the community with an engaging Cabaret show.  Typically held in the Annisquam Village Hall, this show delights sold-out crowds with songs and skits performed by local thespians and musicians.  Again, this year the decision was made to perform the Cabaret virtually because of Covid concerns, giving audiences the wonderful opportunity to enjoy this fabulous show in the comforts of your own home!

Any Donation is welcome, but a Footlights Sponsorship available with a Donation of $100 or more.  At this level the AVP will deliver (locally, within a 35-mile radius) a bottle of prosecco for you to enjoy while watching the show.  All donors will be recognized on the AVP website as soon as the donation is received.  For more information, please visit:  AnnisquamVillagePlayers.org.

Donations can also be made by mailing a check made out to the AVP, c/o Mike English, Annisquam Village Players, P.O. Box 411, Gloucester, MA  01930.

Vietnam memorial in Fog With New Pergolas

I didn’t think the newly located Vietnam Memorial at Stage Fort Park could look any better, but I was wrong. New pergolas have recently been installed and lighting will be coming also. It looked especially pretty in the fog as the sun rose yesterday.

I’m a guy that loves to travel as much as possible and here to tell you @SpiritAirlines is just as good and in some cases better than other major airlines

There. I said it.

I’ve flown Spirit five times now and more times than not I’ve flown in planes that are newer than the ones I’ve flown on Jet Blue, American or Delta.

The flights have all left on time, the flight attendants have been pleasant and the Boston terminal that they fly out of has great food options.

I used to look at Spirit as a last resort airline but now I’ll consider them equally when choosing flights with the other major carriers and base my decisions on direct flights/cost/times of travel.

I’ve had terrible delays on plenty of major airlines through the years, mostly because of weather and some because of mechanical issues.

The weather is the weather, you’re not going to change flight delays when there is terrible weather. I feel like Spirit when they were new were easy to blame for things out of their control and it became fashionable to blame the new airline even though it may have been incorrect to assign blame to them.

Anyway from my experience, I’d say if you are looking at flights and there’s with better times that work for you, I wouldn’t hesitate to book Spirit Airlines rather than take a less convenient or more expensive flight on a different major airline.

City of Gloucester Receives State Grant to Support Haskell Pond Dam Work

Mayor Greg Verga is pleased to share that the City of Gloucester has received a $99,000 state grant to support remediation work at Haskell Pond Dam.

The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs is providing the grant through its Dam and Seawall Repair or Replacement Program, which aims to address failing dams, coastal infrastructure, and levees across the Commonwealth.

The Haskell Pond Dam supplies a significant percentage of the City’s water needs. The 43-foot-high Dam, located just north of Route 128 in West Gloucester, holds back 340 million gallons of water. The Dam was built in 1902. It is classified in poor condition by the state, though not considered in imminent danger of failure.

The City will use the $99,000 grant to support remediation work at the former shooting range near the Dam. Remediation is considered essential to competing for future state and federal grants for improving the Dam.

“Thank you to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs for funding this critical improvement to our City’s infrastructure,” Mayor Verga said. “Ensuring the Dam meets current dam safety standards is a high priority in protecting our residents and the City’s water supply.”
