FACES OF JESUS ART EXHIBIT
Christ, as seen through the eyes of the world, is the focus of a unique art display being shown at The House on the Rock (formerly Eastern Point School) as a message of hope during this
Easter season. These contemporary works of art were submitted by over 800 artisans from 55 different countries who share their works for free through The International Union of Mail-Artists;
an organization started in 1988. There are sculptures, drawings, paintings and photographs. Some pieces are made from wood, plastic, metal, leather and even clothespins and a Yoo-hoo soft drink can!
No two are the same, and each conveys its own emotion with the central theme of the face of Jesus Christ.
The exhibit was last shown at La Salette, North Attleboro as part of its 2011 Festival in Lights and remained in residence there for three years. Originally intended as a traveling exhibit, we are
pleased to have been selected to open this moving display here in Gloucester on Friday and Saturday, March 30 & 31 from 1:00-8:00 pm.
This free event is being sponsored by The Last Stop of Rocky Neck.

BRANT BATTLE ROYALE -By Kim Smith
Brants are monogamous and juvenile Brants typically stay with the parents until their first spring, most likely to learn migrations routes. Whether this was a battle between family members or between competing families I am not sure. From previous observations, Brants mostly feed together amicably, so it was surprising to see this extended battle for the best feeding platform.
Enjoy the Brants while they are here on our shores, most leave during the moth of April.

Listen for #GloucesterMA on the radio! Mass Cultural Council’s WCRB, WBUR, WICN and NEPR spots for Cultural Districts start next week 📻🎙️😊
Last year, the Mass Cultural Council purchased series of 10, 20, and 30 second spots on WCRB, WGBH, WBUR, WICN, and NEPR to promote each of the Massachusetts designated Cultural Districts,” Meri Jenkins explained. They’re doing it again for 2018. Beginning next week, you may hear radio commercials wishing Gloucester and its two cultural districts great success in 2018 (Downtown Cultural District and Rocky Neck cultural district). Email Mayor Romeo Theken’s arts hotline: sefatia4arts@gloucester-ma.gov (subject line MCC radio spots) with the day and time you heard “Gloucester”, where you were and what you think.
Some of the radio spots are scheduled during the following shows
- Two (2) WFCR News spots rotating thru Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Marketplace – Monday thru Saturday
- Two (2) WFCR Run of Station spots rotating thru Classical Music, Jazz and Entertainment programing – Monday thru Saturday
- TWO (2) WNNZ News Network spots rotating Monday thru Saturday
- TWO (2) WNNZ News Network BONUS spots rotating Monday thru Sunday
The MCC is also expanding outreach thru increased collaboration with the state’s office of Travel and Tourism. See Massachusetts excellent and popular travel site.
The Gloucester page has not been edited, yet–it’s just a placeholder. We can edit and businesses can add in. The calendar is an exciting opportunity integrated with the interactive cultural districts map and information. I’m hoping the GMG and chamber calendars can just be synced up.

Restorative Yoga with Acupuncture ~
Please join us and celebrate the beginning of the Spring Season by experiencing the deep relaxation of Restorative Yoga combined with the balancing of your energy and meridians with Acupuncture. As we transition into the Spring season. It is important to strengthen the body and mind and immune system.
Each participant will be positioned in a very comfortable restorative pose while acupuncture will be done on meridian points below the elbows and knees to treat the entire body. (And yes, this will relieve your aching back etc.) While the treatment is going on, you will be lead through a gentle meditation and some Reiki and Cranial Sacral treatments. You will be surrounded by other people quietly receiving treatment at the same time. If you are new to acupuncture, this is a great way to get introduced.

Tonno, Yet Again Fantastic…
PLEASE DON’T POISON MY DINNER
Several friends have asked whether or not I was freaked out by the mouse running up my dress and out my coat sleeve. No, I wasn’t. Surprised, but not panicked, and just happy the frightened little thing did not bite me.
We live in an old house and are occasionally visited by mice, despite my husband’s best efforts at sealing any cracks that may develop in the almost one hundred and seventy five-year-old mortar of the granite foundation. Our cat, Cosmos, before he suffered severe brain damage from a coyote attack, was the best mouser ever. Now that Cosmos has retired, Tom uses Have-a-Heart traps.
I have written about this topic previously, but never in a million years would we use a rodenticide. The first reason being is that if one of our beautiful raptors (including owls, hawks, falcons, and eagles), eats a rat or mouse that has ingested rat poison, the raptor will most surely perish. For example, the majority of Snowy Owls that die in our region and are autopsied, have been killed by rat poison. Secondly, most rats, after ingesting poison, will return to their nest ie., that cozy spot behind your wall. Working in theatre for many years, I encountered more than a few rats, as well as well meaning types who decided to kill rats with rodenticide. If you have ever smelled a dead rat laying behind an inaccessible theatre wall, you would never again use rat poison (and the odor lasts for weeks!).
Beautiful Fish: Haddock -By Al Bezanson

Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) drawn by H. L. Todd
“Haddock are very plentiful all around the open Gulf (of Maine), as well as on all the offshore banks, especially on Georges where they greatly out-number the cod. This is, in fact, one of the two species that now rank at the top among Gulf of Maine fishes, from the commercial standpoint; the rosefish (Acadian redfish) is the other.”
From Fishes of the Gulf of Maine by Bigelow and Schroeder (1953) online courtesy of MBL/WHOI http://www.gma.org/fogm/Melanogrammus_aeglefinus.htm

Massachusetts landings declined from 130 million pounds in 1966 to 7.7 million pounds in 1973. Landings in 2016 were 10.7 million pounds.
Cumulative 1950-2016 reported Massachusetts landings were 3,064,610,662 pounds with a value of $639,412,505 (NOAA)
Acadian redfish in the same period, 1,576,336,078 pounds valued at $128,657,587
The 2002 edition of Fishes of the Gulf of Maine reports that the growth rate of haddock increased within 30 to 40 years, since about 1960 when they were more abundant, reaching an average size of 48-50 cm in 3 years compared to 4 years.
