Fundy Cove at Pawtuckaway Lake – Alex Hauck Photo
Only about an hour and half northwest of Cape Ann, Liv, Matt and Alex had a great time hiking at Pawtuckaway State Park yesterday. Located in southeastern New Hampshire, the park is named for Pawtuckaway Lake and Pawtuckaway Mountains, which are a circular rocky range that form the outline of an ancient volcanic ring dike dating from the Cretaceaous era.

There are a number of trails in varying in length. They opted for the 11 mile route which included several summits.
Pawtuckaway State Park lies within the Northeastern coastal forests ecoregion that also includes Cape Ann.

Pawtuckaway is our favorite ‘local’ campground (just over an hour away). Great summer birding, too. Bald eagles, loons, pileated woodpeckers, and much more. Love it!

Thanks for that Chris; the kids were hoping to see more wildlife but this isn’t the best time of year for critters. I’ll let them know. A great reason to visit again this summer!

Our favorite time there is spring when they first open the campground. By then the animals are used to nobody being around, so it’s easier to catch sight of them–before the summer crowds arrive. Fall is pretty good, too. Michelle takes the kids there several times each season.
