Welcoming 2016 is a great time to“Honor a Teacher” in the Gloucester Public Schools

image

A year ago, the Gloucester Education Foundation (GEF) introduced the “Honor a Teacher” Program to recognize your child’s teachers, middle school house or teaching teams, school, and any staff member(s) whether it is a cafeteria worker, custodian, or guidance counselor. More than 80 awards, totaling $3,000, have been raised by this Honor a Teacher Program and donated to GEF, a 501(C)(3). The Gloucester Education Foundation drives innovation, encourages creativity, and expands student opportunities in the Gloucester Public Schools. This recognition program provides an opportunity for parents, grandparents and community members to honor individuals and teams in the school community who have meaningfully impacted your child’s education.

Students, grandparents/community members and parents can hit the link, www.thinkthebest.org and click on “Honor a Teacher” and complete the prompts to process a secure debit/credit card payment or donation via Pay Pal. No amount is too small and tax deductible donations remain confidential.

There is a spot on the form to include an optional short message to a special teacher, staff member or team/house that is included in the body of the acknowledgement letter. Your recipient receives a letter acknowledging a student or family gift.

The Gloucester Education Foundation is grateful to have so many dedicated faculty and staff members in the Gloucester Public Schools and this “Honor a Teacher” Program is one special way to say thanks during the 2015 holiday season and the upcoming New Year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM NICHOLS CANDY HOUSE

FullSizeRender (11)

Barbara Nichols wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!

Nichols was humming today, filling orders for customers near and far. My father-in-law always puts in a request for their freshly roasted mixed nuts as do my sister-in-law and Mom adore Nichols’s fudge, all four flavors! And it goes without saying that their homemade chocolate treats make wonderful stocking stuffers.

Nichols has terrifically convenient shopping hours, particularly if you are in a pinch (for that always much appreciated chocolate hostess/host gift). They are open seven days a week, Monday through Saturday, from 9am to 8pm and Sunday, from 10am to 6pm.

Hello everyone!
Fly and I are excited to come together in song this week in support of Pathways for Children, a local nonprofit whose mission — to educate, empower, and support local children and their families — is vital to our community. Every year, Pathways partners with local businesses for its annual toy and book drive, and has distributed over 1,000 toys to local children & families enrolled in their programming. This drive is special because it is truly neighbors helping neighbors: all toys and books donated stay in our North Shore community. So please, join us this Wednesday – come for the tunes, stay for the good cheer, and if you can, bring a new, unwrapped toy or book to donate!
See you there, and thanks! – Marina

Sax Gordon Returns to The Rhumb Line for Dave Sag’s Blues Party this Thursday 8:30pm 12.17.2015

Well, just in time for the holiday seasoning, let’s get behind the one and only exploding Takata® airbag of the blues, Mr. Gordon “Sax” Beadle. With his projectile format and penchant for snake charming, this is the guy to take you into the Twilight Zone. Make you forget about that credit card bill due in January. He’s bringing along that nun-eating master of the qatar, Mr. Mike DiBari and the world’s foremost dribbler and fontman, Mr. Ed “Ed” Scheer to boot. Could be my ultimate agglomeration. I love working with these guys and I promise I’ll be better next year. Honest! Really, don’t miss this one! After This Thursday, We’ll be off until January 7, when the good Old Salty Jazz Band returns for some musical mayhem.

AWESOME ROCKPORT GRANT WINNER

AWESOME ROCKPORT GRANT WINNER

Toad Hall, a local non-profit bookstore that donates all profits to local environmental projects was the winner at the inaugural Awesome Rockport pitch night Monday December 14th. Toad Hall received $1,000 from the local micro grant foundation to fund the development of a new website. The new site will, for the first time, give customers the ability to purchase books online from Toad Hall. The new website will also allow the bookstore to enhance its outreach to customers and the community through mailing lists, blog posts and a monthly newsletter.

The newly established Rockport chapter of the Awesome Foundation solicits proposals from the community quarterly and chooses the top three to attend a public pitch night. The three finalists make their case before the local trustees who each donate $100 toward the award. The top vote getter walks away with $1,000 in cash, no strings attached. Proposals to make Rockport more awesome can be made at http://www.awesomefoundation.org/chapters/rockport

The three finalists pictured here (left to right) are: Ardis Francoeur (with winning microgrant in hand!), Sarah Kelly from Rockport Exchange, and Stephanie Woolf from Rockport Music.

Condolences from Homer Alaska For Heavy D’s Family and Friends

Dear Joe,

I was saddened to learn of Heavy D’s death, the news of which just reached us yesterday.

image003

I hope you will convey the condolences of our Homer fishing community here in Alaska to his family and friends.

The wide waters of the oceans

Wrap the world around

And the strong embraces

Of Brother Fishermen reach every small dock.

We will lay a wreath and say our prayers here at our Seafarer’s Memorial on Homer Spit in Kachemak Bay, where my brother-in-law and several dear crewmen are remembered.

With our continued wishes,

What Are Your Favorite Holiday Traditions?

Yesterday I wrote about the importance that I place on holiday traditions.

Earlier this month I wrote about Santa coming to Rockport and the tree lighting.  I got a lovely response from a Facebook reader that shared her own Rockport holiday memory.

When we were little Children we lived in Gloucester…we would come in the bus to Rockport …we would get off the bus at Dock Square and join the other lined up kids..watching for Santa… to come down the hill in his sleigh…it was loaded down with …nuts candy and fruit..in a big stocking…for every child ….then we would run ahead of mother and dad to get to our Grandfather’s house on Summit Ave?..he was a night watch man at the railroad round house….he would always give us a report on what Santa had to say to him as he dropped off our presents…he told us how each of the rain deer were ..and …would be happy to get back to their nice warm house back at the North Pole…we believed every word he said ..my sister and I

Her response made me start to think…..  What about the rest of you?

Anyone else up for sharing their favorite holiday memories in a comment below?  Please do….I’d love to hear them!
