THE SYMPHONIC SPECTACULAR

CAPE ANN SYMPHONY

THE 64th SEASON: A SEASON TO REMEMBER

Yoichi Udagawa, Music Director

THE SYMPHONIC SPECTACULAR

Launches Cape Ann Symphony’s 64th Seas

Cape Ann Symphony kicks off the orchestra’s 64th Concert Season on Saturday, September 26 at 8 pm with Symphonic Spectacular featuring a sultry program of timeless favorites from superstar composers Mussorgsky, Ravel and Gershwin at the CAS performance venue at Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium on 36 Lincoln Street in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. Founded in Gloucester in 1951, the Cape Ann Symphony is a professional orchestra of over 70 players from throughout the New England area. They perform a subscription season of four concerts per year plus several Pops and youth concerts. The Cape Ann Symphony concerts are held at the Manchester-Essex High School auditorium on 36 Lincoln Street in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium is handicapped accessible. Ticket prices are $40 for adults, $35 for senior citizens, $5 for Youth age 18 and under. For tickets and information, call 978-281-0543 or visit www.capeannsymphony.org.

The concert program for the Symphonic Spectacular concert features passionate masterpieces including Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, George Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Maurice Ravel’s Boléro. Conductor Yoichi Udagawa offers a sneak peek into the evening’s program, “Composed of three virtuoso showpieces for orchestra, the first concert of the Cape Ann Symphony’s 64th season is a symphonic triumph! These fascinating pieces really give the orchestra an opportunity to demonstrate their skill, musicianship and passion for music. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is a tour de force in particular for the brass and woodwind players, An American in Paris by legendary composer George Gershwin paints a musical portrait of a singular city in a sparking display of orchestral color and Maurice Ravel’s Boléro is one relentless, unstoppable, inescapable musical build up and massive explosion that always makes audiences go absolutely wild and crazy. It will be an exciting and thrilling way to open the orchestra’s 64th Season, and we can’t wait to present it to our wonderful audiences.” Composer Maurice Ravel provides a link to all three pieces in the program: he orchestrated Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition gave lessons to Gershwin in Paris, and he wrote Bolero.

The Symphony Board of Directors named Yoichi Udagawa the Music Director and Conductor of the Cape Ann Symphony in the summer of 2000 after a yearlong search. In addition to his leadership of Cape Ann Symphony, he is Music Director and Conductor of the Melrose Symphony Orchestra, and the Quincy Symphony Orchestra and a cover conductor at the Boston Pops Orchestra. Mr. Udagawa is on the faculty of the Boston Conservatory where he teaches conducting. Frequently invited to guest conduct, Mr. Udagawa has worked with many different orchestras including the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Nobeoka Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, the Indian Hill Symphony, the Garden State Philharmonic, the Brown University Orchestra, the Syracuse Society for New Music, the Boston Conservatory Orchestra, the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, the Newton Symphony, the Austin Civic Orchestra, and the Mid-Texas Symphony.

Yoichi Udagawa, Cape Ann Symphony Music Director and Conductor

Mr. Udagawa is at home in popular and contemporary music as well as the standard symphonic repertoire. He is known for his relaxed manner and ability to speak from the podium which has helped new audiences as well as enthusiasts gain a greater appreciation for symphonic music. His programs often include premieres of new works – some specially commissioned for the orchestra — as well as great orchestral works across the symphonic repertoire and lively Pops programs. He is also an integral part of the Cape Ann Symphony Youth Outreach programs to area schools.

Yoichi Udagawa, the son of a nuclear physicist father and singer/artist mother, was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1964. His family immigrated to the United States soon thereafter. He began playing the violin at age four and made his conducting debut at age fifteen. After receiving a music degree from the University of Texas at Austin, he continued advanced studies in conducting with Gunther Schuller, Seiji Ozawa, Morihiro Okabe, and Henry Charles Smith. A fan of many different styles of music, Mr. Udagawa also enjoys performing gospel music in addition to his conducting activities. He is also an accomplished violinist and an avid fan of exercise and yoga.

Yet another reason that Gloucester is a great place, with people like Tony Giacalone helping to shepherd cool events like this to happen and a willingness by City officials to take barriers to doing cool stuff out of the way instead of putting them in front of you. Gloucester is on the move and it’s because we have forward thinking leaders that are allowing progressive fun stuff to happen instead of trying to squash anything just for the sake of squashing it. Kudos to the organizers and hopefully when work isn’t so crazy I’ll be able to attend one.

My Monarch Butterfly Film at the Leonardo Museum in Utah!

As part of a revolving exhibit titled “Spark!,” the short film that I created for the Berkshire Museum, A Flight of Monarchs, will be playing continuously from now through November at the Leonardo in Salt Lake City, Utah. I am super excited about this–the exhibit sounds wonderful–

“What is “spark?” Is it that feeling you get when you know you’re on to something big? Is it that irresistible flow of an idea that’s just about to burst into reality? What happens when your creativity is ignited?  What becomes possible?

We get it– which is why we created this brand new (and really big) exhibition.

Imagine, explore and interact with over 700 pieces of original 2D and 3D art, live performances, original writings, and more.”  Read more about it here: SPARK!

Thank you for watching! More about Monarchs and the potential for a spike in this year’s southward migration tomorrow.

New public art: LOOK UP downtown! Ken Riaf’s Pleasant & Main ARTISPHERE sign, last chance to see group show at Trident, wall mural on Parsons HarborWalk

Cat Ryan submits-

Hi Joey,

Look up downtown if you haven’t yet seen the wonderful Pleasant & Main ARTISPHERE sign designed and project-boosted by artist and dealer, Ken Riaf. Then head on into his Jeffrey Marshall exhibit Law & Water Gallery.

I bet you’ve seen that Ed Touchette painting catching your eye through Trident’s window—last days to see the group exhibit at Trident Gallery. Just one week away from Ed Touchette’s solo exhibit at Trident. East Gloucester and Veterans School parents please get ready to bring your kids to see his exhibit. East Gloucester kids can find an Mr. Touchette throwback tucked away on East Main. Here’s a snapshot – try and find it.

Pass through Parsons down to Rogers or up to Main to see the progress of the artists of Art Haven/Hive. Their wall mural along a private building of Parsons Street is coming along and their depiction of Man at the Wheel is filling in…check it out! We have cleaned and scrubbed out graffiti on many walls, more than once, and are happy to see new public art added alongside the temporary FISH NET street mural and Dress Code’s.

I’m not sure what artist, Bob Stephenson, would have thought of the latest mural, but I wish he could have seen it. I do know he liked the Calderwood Fish Net mural and was grateful to have the graffiti painted out, the lights installed and anytime we swept and weeded.

Special thanks this week to the folks with Dan Leaman Landscaping and Maintenance Corp for extra clean up and weeding along Parsons Street.

Weekly Meeting of the Seagull Order of Rockport

First order on the meeting agenda is the fact that it is almost the end of tourist season and where the heck are we going to start finding our french fries?

Did anyone bring a pencil?  Whose turn is to write the meeting minutes?  Why do you always get the highest piling?  What makes you so special?

I took this photo because I thought it was funny that 3 seagulls looked like they were having a meeting.  I just realized that there are actually 4 seagulls sitting on the pilings.

oey,

Good morning! This is Jordan Olson from LEAP for Education. We’re currently looking for volunteers in the Gloucester area to help with our College Success Program. I’ve attached a volunteer flyer and I was hoping that you would be able to post it onto your GMG blog!

We’re especially looking for volunteers that can be there on Mondays for the Gloucester Program. Here is a bit about what a volunteer can expect to do:

  • Prior to the meetings: Reading the pre-planned lesson plan and preparing for the activities by collecting materials, etc.
  • Setting up the room, putting out the snacks, writing agenda on board for students, turning on computers, etc.
  • Taking weekly attendance and keeping track of students’ grades on a quarterly basis
  • Reminding students of upcoming meetings and follow up with students who are not meeting attendance standards
  • Monitoring and assisting students as they work on assigned tasks (such as resume writing, college and/or scholarship applications, financial aid forms, registering for college entrance exams like SAT’s, Subject Tests, ACT’s, etc.)
  • Cleaning up, putting away snacks, etc.
  • Reflecting on the lesson and what the students got out of the activities so we can make changes for the future

If you have any questions/concerns please contact me.

Best wishes,

Jordan

They’ll clean the space for free, but they get to keep what they find. And in these old Colonial houses, there’s no telling what’s hidden behind the rafters, from valuable vintage toys to mint-condition collectibles. After they pick the place clean, they transform the attic into a bright new space the whole family can enjoy.
