Over Ice

I did a post the other day about how much fun it is to tailgate at a polo match over at the Myopia Polo grounds.  If you didn’t read it, check it out HERE

Sure, the picnic spreads can get all fancy and surely there is a fair share of the highfalutin, but don’t for one second think that the crowd isn’t also fun and laid back.

Take this for instance….  It might look like a juxtaposition, but I think not.

Thrift Shop Grand Re-Opening

St John’s Episcopal Church is pleased to announce the grand re-opening of its Thrift Shop on Saturday, August 29th from 9 am – 2 pm. The Thrift Shop closed last summer for renovations, following the installation of the church’s new heating system. We are again able to serve the community by offering gently used goods at reasonable prices. Following the August 29th re-opening, the Thrift Shop will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 am – 2 pm until the end of November. St John’s is located at 48 Middle Street, Gloucester, and the entrance to the Thrift Shop is from the church parking lot on Washington Street.

Hi,
I am trying to remember the name of a cool clothing discount store which was in Rockport in the 60’s. My friends and I used to drive up there from Cambridge for our back-to-school clothing, but we can’t remember the name of it. Can you help!

Vernon’s Pit, Lanesville- Summer of 1972 Mystery

Dee Noble asks-

Through a series of very odd coincidences, Steve and I met Jim and Kathy from Roanake, VA today. They are here as a result of a near-death experience Jim had at Vernon’s Pit in Lanesville in either July or August of 1972. Jim was living temporarily on Day Ave in Lanesville that summer.

Jim and his friend were sitting on the rocks when he realized that a younger kid (high school age) was in trouble in the water. He jumped in and was able to rescue this kid and gave him mouth-to-mouth until the ambulance arrived.

He heard later from a neighbor who knew a nurse at AGH that the kid survived. Jim is determined to find out who this man is.

He is pretty sure the kids name was also Jim, had dark hair, and was with (3) other boys and (1) girl at the time. The man would be somewhere around his 60’s now. Any and all information greatly appreciated. This incident changed the course of Jim’s life and I would love to see him solve the mystery!

What? You’ve never been aboard the Beauport Princess Cruise Ship? Rectify that on Schooner Festival Sunday!

This is NOT a small whale-watch or fishing boat.  It’s a fully-loaded CRUISE SHIP featuring 2 enclosed decks with dance floors, 3 full-service bars (wine, beer & top-shelf liquor) and an open-air top deck — theatre seating on the first deck, tables on the second deck and couches on the top deck.

The weather will probably be great, but even if it’s not, you can party in luxury and comfort on both of the air-conditioned (or heated if need be) indoor decks with bars and dance floors.

Plus you’ll be partying with 5-time Grammy Nominees Roomful of Blues and cruising historic Gloucester Harbor full of tall ships on Schooner Festival Sunday!  Our last three concert cruises sold out, so please don’t be one of those people who calls us begging for a spot we can’t give you.  Get your tickets RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW. Then you can relax and enjoy Schooner Festival weekend!

Lisa Smith from Cape Ann TV writes, “Zack is blowing us away over here. If you get a chance, please watch it (it’s only 4 minutes). This is only Zack’s 3rd editing assignment on a short video. It is his first time going out and shooting an event, I helped him with the interviews and he shot all the b-roll himself! He did all the editing. Zack is going into his senior year at MERHS and I think he is destined for big things. We have had some very talented interns in here, but I have never seen anyone like him. Oh yeah, he is a really nice young man too.”

Strandbeests at Crane Beach

The kinetic sculptures of Theo Jansen, Strandbeests, were on display at Crane Beach Saturday morning. The place was jammed! Fascinating sculptures, machines, beings or whatever you might call them. they walked the beach powered by the wind. The event was a lead up outdoor show for the exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum in September.

Alan Watts Quote of the Week from Greg Bover

“Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone.”

Alan Watts  (1915-1973)

Born in Britain, philosopher and theologian Alan Watts moved to the US in the thirties, attending Episcopal seminary while at the same time receiving training in Zen Buddhism. He served briefly as a priest but left the church to pursue a career as a teacher, writer, and lecturer. His bestselling 1957 book The Way of Zen was one of more than two dozen he wrote on spirituality, religion and consciousness. Many of his brilliant lectures are available on the web and as an Iphone app, and focus on the idea that we are not separate from the universe which surrounds us.
