Discover the History of Cape Ann Granite! Local author releases exciting new title featuring stunning, vintage images
Telling a story in pictures is Cape Ann Granite, the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series. The book by local author Paul St. Germain is set to release on July 20, 2015. The book boasts over 200 vintage images, many of which have never been published, and showcases memories of days gone by.
The granite industry began on Cape Ann with the first sale of a piece of Rockport granite, for use as a millstone, to a farmer in Newburyport in 1800. The industry would grow to include more than 60 quarries and operations around the cape, becoming the second-largest economic force in the area behind fishing. Hundreds were employed as quarrymen, stonecutters, paving cutters, and finishers. Cape Ann was particularly well fitted for the pursuit of granite as its rocky hills and shores afforded a comparatively inexhaustible source of supply, and its splendid shipping facilities gave the advantage of quick and economical transportation to market by sea and land. The industry eventually declined, and by 1930, most quarries had gone out of business because of labor strikes and low demand. Today, most of these quarries are filled with rainwater and springwater, and many are used as reservoirs for the surrounding communities.
The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. His interest in Cape Ann area began in 1999 when he was asked to join the Thacher Island Association’s Board of Directors. In 2002 he was elected President of the Association and has worked to develop a variety of ways to fund the restoration efforts on the island

Cape Ann Museum celebrates Fiesta with film, photography, sculpture and more.

GLOUCESTER, Mass. (June 10, 2015) – The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to offer a special view of Fiesta-inspired art. The mini-exhibit will be on display in the lower level atrium from Tuesday, June 23 through Sunday, June 28 during Museum hours. Drawing on the Museum’s own collection, along with private collections in the area, the exhibit includes works by New York artist Philip Reisman who worked in Gloucester during the 1940s and 1950s, painters Lucette White and Eileen Mueller who captured the color and excitement of Fiesta in more recent years, and collage artist and sculptor Hans Pundt. Two documentary films about Fiesta will be available for viewing on a continuous loop throughout the week. Related exhibits and information can be found in the Museum’s Maritime Galleries.
St. Peter’s Fiesta – Festa di San Pietro – honors St. Peter, the patron saint of fishermen. It is the largest and most colorful of the celebrations that Sicilian immigrants brought to Gloucester. The tradition of celebrating Fiesta began in Gloucester the late 1920s as a neighborhood novena and expanded to a city-wide event in the 1930s. Fiesta is still celebrated in Gloucester in late June, with music, dancing, parades, fireworks, seine boat races and the traditional greasy pole competition. On the last day of Fiesta, an outdoor Mass is held, followed by the blessing of Gloucester’s fishing fleet.

Don’t miss Regina Piantedosi’s exhibit at her new YUPO Gallery space, 74 Rocky New Ave., “My Mother-My Self” presenting an impressive array of retrospective works by Anna DelloRusso (Regina’s Renaissance woman artist mother) and Regina. Opening Reception Saturday, June 13th from 4-8pm.
Also don’t miss the Opening Reception for Joseph Flack Weiler’s photography exhibit at Gallery 53, 53 Rocky Neck Ave., also on Saturday, June 13th from 5-7pm.
Finally, watch for the opening of the Madfish Grille next weekend, with a soft opening Friday evening, June 12. The restaurant will not be serving food this year, offering music Thursday through Sunday, and Dark Gable’s BBQ by Andre under the canopy. Check out the cool graffiti art in the bar by James A. Fox, artist from Beverly who works as a teach of graffiti and mixed media arts at Collins Middle School in Salem.

NORTH SHORE ARTS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES: NOTED ROCKPORT ARTIST, BONNIE GRAY, “I Love To Paint!” SOLO EXHIBITION. June 4 – June 27, 2015. Opening Reception June 14th, 2 – 4 pm. Open and free to the public.
Enjoying the challenge of painting still life, landscapes, and florals in oil, Gray says, “I love to paint! I appreciate the richness of the colors made possible using oil on canvas, and strive to create a sense of realism. A day spent painting is as refreshing as any vacation day might be. My interest in art, and love of painting is without doubt one of the great blessings in my life, and I strive to convey that feeling in my work.”
Having studied at Massachusetts College of Art while in high school, Gray was also a student of the late Helen Van Wyk, focusing on still life painting with a concentration in the techniques of the Dutch Masters. In addition to being an artist member of the North Shore Arts Association since 1995, she has been a member of the Local Colors Artists’ Cooperative in Gloucester, MA since 2008. Her work can be found in private collections on Cape Ann and around the country.
The North Shore Arts Association’s galleries are open, free to the public, Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Noon to 5 p.m.
