A GMG reader has submitted this early 1950s (?) view of West Main St. What memories does it stir up for you?

Maybe earlier than the 50’s. Lufkin’s was at the other end of town(Main Street) in late 50’s.

I agree that Lufkins was back the other way.

Maybe it was just a bill board saying where Lufkins was? My dad was a baker at Lufkins. It was down on Main Street across from where Roses is now, at least in the mid fifties, when my dad would occasionally take me to work with him.

Lufkins was down at the other end of Main st. But, in the picture It looks like Lufkins was originally at that end of Main St. Look closely and you can see the small sign Lufkin’s Diner pointing towards the actual diner.

I was waiting for someone to notice that. Click on the picture to enlarge it. And what’s with the “Ladies Dining Room”?

The era was the mid forties. The West End Taxi was owned by my Stepfather, Joe Morendo and my ,Mother, Lillian. They also owned the Kaiser and Frazier car agencies across the Rotary, which they sold to the Tallys. they then moved the taxi business. Back up Mainstreet to Number 32, next door to Whitmarsh. This was a couple of years before graduated from GHS in 1947.
Lufkins and the Busybee were the two best restraints for Ladies and children to eat without being squeezed in with the fish workers.
thanks for the memories!

All the cars are pre WW II except maybe the closest one with the hood up, so early to mid 40s. Notice the sign on the far right Gus Chekares, it looks like real estate sales & rentals, summer and yearly. I insured my first car in the 50s with Gus’s Insurance Agency. Also on the far left Teddy Barkas’s restaurant.
