“Anthony Thieme (20 February 1888 – 6 December 1954) was a landscape and marine painter and a major figure of the Rockport (MA) School of American regional art. He was a contemporary of important Rockport artists Aldro Hibbard, Emil Gruppe, W. Lester Stevens, Antonio Cirino, and Marguerite Pierson.
Born in Rotterdam on 20 February 1888, Thieme studied at the Academie of Fine Arts in Rotterdam for two years and then, briefly, at the Royal Academy, the Hague. He traveled widely in Europe, frequently finding work as a stage designer.
Thieme traveled to the United States at the age of 22. He quickly found work as a stage designer at the Century Theater in New York, designing sets for the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. When the commission ended, he traveled to South America, primarily Brazil and Argentina. Stage work again provided his livelihood. A return to Europe followed with further work in England, France, and Italy.
Returning to the United States with a contract for additional stage work, Thieme found himself in Boston. He discontinued work on the stage in 1928 and from then on made his living with the sales of his paintings and etchings. Thieme married Lillian Beckett in 1929 and moved to Rockport, MA. He established the Thieme School of Art. He exhibited his work frequently at the Grand Central Art Galleries in New York.
He continued to travel widely; Mexico, Guatemala, Florida, and France were major destinations, always painting en plein air.
Thieme committed suicide on 6 December 1954 in Greenwich, CT. The circumstances of his death are not fully understood. There have been stories of deep depression or major illness, but no definitive rationale for his suicide has emerged.
Anthony Thieme was a full member of the American Watercolor Society, Art Alliance of America, the Salmagundi Club, the Boston Art Club, North Shore Art Association, Rockport Art Association, New York Water Color Club, Art Alliance of Philadelphia and the National Arts Club.”

The Gloucester Gig Rowers and Maritime Gloucester are planning their 6th Annual Harbor Race, The Chip Norton Memorial, for Saturday, September 20th. The 3+ mile triangular course is open to Pilot Gigs, Whaleboats, Dories and other traditional rowing craft. The course will start and finish at Niles Beach. Registration opens at 8AM at Niles Beach. Cape Ann Artisans Featured at North of Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau Luncheon

The North of Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau held a luncheon on Wednesday, July 23rd at Castle Manor Inn at 141 Essex Avenue, Gloucester – www.castlemanorinn.com. Held outdoors on the Inn’s beautifully-decorated and covered deck, with views overlooking Gloucester’s waterfront, luncheon guests were treated to a presentation by the Cape Ann Artisans. Glass bead and jewelry-maker Beth Williams and mosaic artist Pam Stratton represented the Artisans in their presentation covering the exquisite work of Cape Ann’s artisan community as well as the bi-annual Cape Ann Artisans’ Studio Tour. The next Studio Tour will be held on October 11-13. For additional information about the Cape Ann Artisans, visit www.capeannartisans.com.

SAILING JUNIOR OLYMPICS COMES TO GLOUCESTER
HOSTED BY EASTERN POINT YACHT CLUB AND SAIL GHS
On Sunday, August 10, youth sailors from up and down Massachusetts Bay will begin arriving in Gloucester to compete in the most important youth sailing event of the summer in Massachusetts, the 2014 US Sailing Junior Olympic Sailing Festival, hosted by Eastern Point Yacht Club and SailGHS. Over 250 sailors ranging in ages from 8 to 18 are expected, and will be competing in four classes of boat, including Club 420’s, Lasers, Optimists and O’pen Bics.
This event was last hosted by Eastern Point YC last hosted in 2006, and competition will occur both within and just outside of Gloucester Harbor. The Junior Olympics last visited Gloucester most recently in 2012 when hosted by the Annisquam Yacht Club, with competition occurring on Sandy Bay.
US Sailing’s Junior Olympic Sailing Program is a nationwide series of sailing regattas sharing a common goal: to encourage young sailors to enjoy sailing and to develop their skill. Events mix Olympic-style competition with elements of learning and fun for all levels–from beginning racers to those with Olympic aspirations.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for young sailors to compete in a large, regional fleet with Olympic-style racing, with sailors who excel at this level often progressing to the national Arena” event chairman Rennie Worsfold said, “and Gloucester and Eastern Point’s own Ben Richardson, current chairman of the U.S. Sailing Olympic committee, 2010 210 National Champion, 2011 Laser Masters World Champion, 2013 Rhodes 19 National Champion, and former Olympic hopeful was a product of this system.
The event has been designated as a “green regatta” with event coordinators working with the Sailors for the Sea. Founded in 2004, Sailors for the Sea is a nonprofit organization that educates and empowers the boating community to protect and restore our oceans and local waters. The event will also feature guest speaker Tim Wadlow, 2 time Olympian in the 49er class, who will address the fleet in an educational session Tuesday evening, August 12.
Racing will commence Monday August 11, midday, with the Optimist and O’pen Bic race courses located in close proximity of Niles Beach, and the 420 and Laser classes outside the DogBar breakwater at the tip of Eastern Point. Spectator viewing is possible at both locations.

The Fitz Hugh Lane’s Boston Harbor is in two locations, one near Westborough, the other one along 495 near Wrentham/Plainview/Foxbourough.
Salem State College has the Hassam. Boston is the location of the Heade Giant Magnolias.

Where was the Tom?
This little turkey family seemed so vulnerable. Although blending well with the surrounding vegetation, the hen was disabled. She was only able to half walk, half hop. Despite her injury, she kept close watch over the babies as they foraged. I was especially surprised that no Tom came charging to protect the flock, which has been my experience with past turkey encounters.
