Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This week Kathy continues with part two of the documentary on Felicia Oil’s family business. John Nicastro (son of Sam Nicastro) now manages the fuel dock. The first picture shows him capturing the flag on the greasy pole at Fiesta in 1955. The second is a shot taken in 2009 at the National Marine Fisheries (pictured left to right): John Nicastro, Nick Sanfilippo and Frank Cattone. The next two are photographs of the dock today and a video interview ends this series.

Mixed Bean Salad with Vinaigrette Dressing

Still using up Easter leftover ingredients!  Last night I was thrilled to find a handful of fresh string beans leftover from Easter, when I learned that a vegetarian friend of my son would be staying for dinner.  I scanned the pantry, and  refrigerator, for ideas, and began chopping, grating, straining, and washing, fresh herbs, feta cheese, garlic, red onion, and beans.  After tossing it all together, I whipped up a simple vinaigrette and a delicious meal even non vegetarians would enjoy was created and on the table in less then ten minutes.  Today I sent my husband Barry to work with a container of this healthy hearty and delicious Mixed Bean Salad  to enjoy for lunch.

Friday April 25th , 2014 Cape Ann Weather…

Marine Forecast….
Fri NW winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt…becoming SW 5 to 10 kt in the afternoon. Seas 3 to 5 ft.
Fri Night S winds 10 to 15 kt. Gusts up to 20 kt after midnight. Seas 3 to 5 ft. A chance of showers.

Friday Forecast : Beautiful plenty of Sunshine mild temps in the Mid – Upper 60’s away from the Coast , lower 50’s to mid 50’s with Sea breeze’s at the shore .. Light north west winds 10-12 mph…
Friday Night increasing clouds chance of rain very late .. Winds turning on shore with increasing gusts …

Seems as we go into the Weekend and Beyond , Rex Block will be in position and set up over the North Atlantic .. Most times this would mean miserable weather with cool to cold conditions and precipitation in the form of rain and or Snow! Also introduces storms to stall off our coastline as they approach our latitude . So in a nutshell it’s not looking good through next week , timing and strength of systems is difficult to process with such a pattern in place . Just bet on below normal temps and above Normal Precip! Temps 40’s to Low 50’s and 30’s at night …

Spring belle + me Show May 2 At The Rocky Neck Cultural Center

HI Joey,

I hope all is well and thank you for your wonderful blog!

I was wondering if you could post our invitation for our belle+me Spring/Summer Show to be held on Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center (6 Wonson Street, Rocky Neck).

As you might know,  created by 2 Cape Ann locals, Lisa LeVasseur and myself, belle+me is a French-inspired line of cool scarves and cooler jewelry. The handmade pendants are one of a kind and we use “repurposed” metal, beads and fabric when possible.

Rich fabrics, vibrant colors and subtle sophistication with a little touch of hipster describe our 2014 spring/summer collection to a tee. Or as we like to say; gypsy meets preppy. Imagine a combination of these two unique styles and you have the latest offerings from belle+me.

Thank you so much for supporting local businesses, artists and a great community!

Last chance to save money on tomorrow’s Beatles Benefit for UU Meetinghouse Restoration

Just because it’s a benefit doesn’t mean you can’t save a little money by getting your tickets on-line.  Go for it.

You’ll recognize the songs, but experience them in a wonderfully new way as they are interpreted by some of Cape Ann’s finest singer/songwriters. And you’ll continue to help restore one of Gloucester’s best-loved landmarks.

As quoted in today’s Gloucester Daily Times, “It’s such a historical landmark for religious freedom and freedom of thought,” said King. “This is a place we need to preserve.”  We agree.  Please join us.  And save a bit of money by getting your tickets now, right here.

All the ingredients for a great restaurant at Short & Main right here in Gloucester

For the past few weeks, Vickie and I have been even more insanely busy than normal, which is pretty insane to begin with.  On Tuesday night when, at the last minute, our son went off to the movies with friends, we had a chance to dine alone — so we went where people have been urging us to go for nearly a year: Short & Main. What a perfect treat!

This place is an adventure.  Now, before you quiver with fear and say, “Ohhh, I don’t like adventure when I go out to eat — I just want comfort food,” check this out.  It IS comfort food.  Oysters, Pizza, Meatballs, Smoked Cod, Salads, Breads, Crème BrĂ»lĂ©e, Ice Cream, Unique Cocktails, Excellent Wine & Beer.  It’s what they do with some of the foods you eat all the time that is so adventurous.  I’ll give you just one example: Pizza made with mozzarella, red onion, arugula, prosciutto and Parmesan.  But this is no ordinary pizza.

Anna (L) and Nora from Short & Main
Anna (L) and Nora from Short & Main

I asked Nora, who was nice enough to answer lots of questions, how hot the oven was and she said about 950.  This is NOT something you try at home.  Now, the arugula and prosciutto aren’t cooked, just warm, so you get a taste, texture and temperature sensation like nothing else you’ve ever experienced before.  And that’s just one dish.  EVERY dish is this much fun.

Plus they take sourcing their ingredients very seriously.  They get a pig every week — and they use the whole thing.  Ask about that next time you’re there.

But good food alone does not a great restaurant make.  For that you need what most of us refer to as “atmosphere”.  In my view, atmosphere is comprised of 10% decor and 90% personality.  Short & Main exudes the personality of people, who are 100% in love with food and have invited you into their warm, cozy, friendly and (most importantly) fun establishment.

Here’s an example: After Oysters, Pork Rillettes, Greens w/ Smoked Cod and a some excellent wines, our son calls just as our individual pizzas are ready.  We had over-estimated the running time of the film (that’s what we get for not checking).  So we ask our server, Anna, if we can get them to go.  Then we have an idea.  Get the kid and bring him back.  So, Vickie leaves and when Anna comes back with the pizzas, beautifully boxed, I ask if we can change our plans and add our son, who would like the meatballs.  “No problem,” she replies enthusiastically and moves me to a larger table.  Then she suggests I speak with Nora, who can answer some of my more specific questions about sourcing, etc., while I wait.  When Vickie and John return, we’re treated like long-lost friends weary from an arduous journey, which matches exactly how we feel (almost spooky isn’t it).

Oh dear, My atomic piles are acting up…and there’s no cure but to present Mr. Dennis Brennan, the only cure for the blues. This cat is the sodium lamp of vocalization, with a great collection of hats and tunes to ease your pain and assuage your inner  ĂĽbermensch. Big D is one of my fave singers and easy to follow into his pungent cave of She did me wrong. Girls, tighten that bustiĂ©r.
D is bringing along a new guitarist for us to taste: Mr.Tim Gearan. Known by reputation only, he comes here to ruin your life, musically speaking. I can’t wait. Temple throbbing provided by that Rheumful ‘o Blooze mainstay and imperial wizard,
Mr. Chris Rivelli. I’ll be on bass as usual. N.B. Our hours are back to 8:30 to 11:30
