Greetings From Our Fred

P1000153 Fred is doing well and sends his best regards to all. He is working hard at his physical therapy and expects to be back on his feet soon. Fred is finding photo subjects, even in his small room, and will be posting some results on GMG and his Facebook page. His spirits are good and his will to get better is strong. Can’t wait to see him back behind the counter at Bodin Historic Photo.

This magnificent bird cast a shadow as it flew by my office on Friday.  I believe it was having some lunch.

Pipers? Plovers?

pipers

There was a time when I would have known what these were, but they are cute and there were a bunch of them on the shore at Brace Cove.  Anyone know what they are?

Neil Young, Massachusetts’ most “distinctive” artist, just might revolutionize digital music today at SXSW

A recent blog by Paul Lamere of Echo Nest (in Somerville, MA) claims to have analyzed listener data from music streaming services to determine the most “distinctive” artists by state.  His method is very interesting, if a tad wonkish (see his explanation here). Essentially the most “distinctive” artist for Massachusetts is the artist that is very popular in MA, but NOT very popular in other states — and, based on Paul Lamere’s study, that artist is Neil Young, who is scheduled to unveil his new, studio-quality music service and device called Pono, at 5pm today at South by Southwest (more here).

Artists LOVE this new sound.  Check out what they have to say in Neil Young’s Kickstarter campaign for Pono, here.  Even if Pono is a flop, the mere fact that people who make music are finally talking about good quality sound in the digital age is a major breakthrough.  Who knows where this revolution will lead, but you can say you were there (even if only via the Internet) when Neil Young Started it.

I guess we should all be proud to live in Massachusetts!  Perhaps the boys can play a little Neil Young tonight at Jalapenos in his honor!

I found this photo of a Painting I did of Annisquam Light seen from Wingaersheek Beach. I donated it a couple of years a go to a St. Ann’s School Auction. It reminded me a little of a Beautiful photo Marty posted recently.

The Linquata Family St. Joseph Altar From The 40’s

PrintDolores Sheehan shares~ Linquata family in the 40’s celebrating St, Josephs at 55r Main St (now the Dogbar Parking Lot)

Linquater family altar Dolores

Dolores, thank you for sharing this  beautiful photo with GMG !

The Linquater Family is a perfect example of a Sicilian Family here in Gloucester who is known to keep up family traditions throughout the year, for many generations. I have been blessed to attend many of their celebrations over the years

Old St. Joseph Altar photos are so much more than just old photos. They are priceless treasures, tangible documents, which link us back to the roots of this cultural tradition that our ancestors started many generations ago. Each photo depicts volumes of family stories and shared times together.  Yesterday while driving in the car with my twins, the topic about the importance of keeping tradition came up. My son asked me “Mah why is it so important to you to keep up the traditions that your grandparents kept?”I took a moment to gather my thought, in how to best give an example that they’d forever remember… Continue reading “The Linquata Family St. Joseph Altar From The 40’s”

Pet of the Week- Chance

chance

My name is Chance, I am a four-month-old male Boarder Collie/Retriever pup with a tan-and-white coat.   I should be medium in size when I am fully grown.   I am at the Cape Ann Animal Aid, located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter, Four Paws Lane, Gloucester until I am adopted.  I am here with my brother.  We are active and happy pups.   The shelter has lots of trails and places to play; we feel safe and well taken care of.   Please stop by and visit us and you can also check out the shelter’s website at: CapeAnnAnimalAid.com

On this site you can learn more about the shelter, our wish list and upcoming events.  Also, there will be photos of all adoptable cats and dogs.  If you are looking for a pup, please give me a chance!

Maritime Gloucester is looking for pictures of Cape Ann — specifically pictures of coves, such as Folly Cove or Brace’s Cove — for potential use as the cover photo for the reprinting of the seminal book “The Sea is All About Us”, a guidebook to the marine environments of Cape Ann and other northern New England waters. First published in 1973, it was authored by Gloucester resident Sarah Fraser Robbins and noted marine biologist Clarice Yentsch, Ph.D. The photo should be high resolution and include “sky,” in addition to the coast line, as the title of the guidebook will be printed on the photo. We can offer attribution and Maritime Glouceter membership benefits to the photographer of the chosen photo. All photos must be submitted electronically to Tom Balf at tbalf@maritimegloucester.org by this Friday, March 14th. Thanks in advance.

Sorry for followup/correction — black and white photo

Hi Joey,

The Rockport Rotary is hosting a Wine Tasting event at Cruiseport on March 28th. We would like to announce it to Cape Ann and thought you might be willing to include it on GMG  next week.  It should be a fun night and a much needed spring break from this cold winter weather.  The proceeds will benefit our community and international service projects.

Attached is a poster which provides the details on our event which include both live and silent auctions. We are moving it this year from the Shalin Liu to Cruiseport so we can accommodate more people.

Thank-you for your anticipated assistance in spreading the word.

VEGAN COOKING DEMO DRAWS A CROWD
On Saturday, March 8, vegan chef Elizabeth Reed of Rockport presented a class in cooking with winter vegetables. An avid crowd of nineteen cooking enthusiasts swarmed the kitchen of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church as Reed demonstrated the preparation of three dishes: creamy roasted root vegetable soup, raw winter vegetable salad, and roasted Brussels sprouts salad with toasted spiced pecans. Students tasted all three dishes, learned about the benefits of a plant-based diet, and received plentiful recommendations for food shopping, kitchen tools, and cookbooks. The event drew cooks from Salem, Malden, and Concord as well as Cape Ann.
The cooking class was sponsored by the church’s recently formed Green Committee, which is making the church a community headquarters for information on environmentally conscious living. If you have ideas for future Green activities, please email the church atgloucesteruu@earthlink.net. For recipes and for more information on Elizabeth Reed,  visit her blog, http://elizabethruns.wordpress.com/.

A Coffeehouse in Rockport with an Awesome Band!

Yes, this band is indeed awesome. Not that I’m biased or anything. Of course the fact that the band is made up of my brother, niece and two nephews doesn’t influence my love for their music. Not at all, I swear (well…maybe just a bit). But it is true that I really think that anyone who digs roots music will find Daniel Dye & the Miller Road Band’s live show to be just as awesome as I do. They are playing this Thursday, March 13th at the Rockport Community House, with proceeds to benefit the work of Rockport Festivals, the group that puts together the Rockport Farmers Market, HarvestFest and Motif No.1 Day in downtown Rockport.

The Coffeehouse will feature the delicious coffee of Brothers’ Brew and give community members a chance to connect with the folks of Rockport Festivals. Opportunities to sign up to volunteer with the festivals and Farmers Market will be on hand, and we look forward to meeting up with our friends and neighbors and kicking off the spring after a long, cold, snowy winter.

Daniel Dye & the Miller Road Band are making a stop in Rockport on their Northeast mini-tour in support of their new album and feature a mix of original tunes in the style of indie-folk, Americana and roots music, playing everything from the fiddle, cello, viola, harmonica, mandolin, guitar, banjo to the melodica.
Please call me at 978-546-2861 or email rockportfestivals@gmail.com if you need any more information, and we’ll see you Thursday in Rockport!DDMRBpromoRockport SMALL

Filming Continues on Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph Film Project, Today at Caffe Sicilia!

San Giuseppe Bread Caffe Sicilia ©Kim Smith 2014Preparing and baking the special San Guiseppe bread is a family endeavor at Caffe Sicilia. Within an hour’s time, Maria, Nina, and Domenic created dozens of loaves of bread in religiously significant shapes of St. Joseph’s staff, angels, and even a carpenter’s saw, as well as beautiful and whimsical flowers, sun, snails, and bunches of grapes. While they artfully and deftly shaped and baked, they shared their St. Joseph’s stories for our camera. Thank you Maria, Domenic, and Nina!

When I Heard the Learn’d Physicist

Sand Ripples and Dunes
Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics

An erodible bed sheared by a fluid flow, gas or liquid, is generally unstable, and bed forms grow. This review discusses the following issues, in light of the recent literature: What are the relevant dynamical mechanisms controlling the emergence of bed forms? Do they form by linear instability or nonlinear processes such as pattern coarsening? What determines their timescales and length scales, so different in air and water? What are the similarities and differences between aeolian and subaqueous patterns? What is the influence of the mode of transport: bed load, saltation, or suspension? Can bed forms emerge under any hydrodynamical regime, laminar and turbulent? Guided by these questions, we propose a unified description of bed-form growth and saturation, emphasizing the hydrodynamical regime in the inner layer and the relaxation phenomena associated with particle transport.

When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer

BY WALT WHITMAN

When I heard the learn’d astronomer,
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.
