Tuna, Truro, Magnolia, and the Fish Stick

From the (Martha’s) Vinyard Gazette, circa 1951: ” John Sweek of Queen’s, NYC, secretary to a magistrate in his home city, is shown at left with his companions, Robert Collinson from Provincetown and John Kohr of Magnolia, with three tuna caught on rod and reel near the Truro shore in Provincetown Harbor. The fishermen had their best luck with blue atom plugs and squid as bait.” These are definitely surf casting fishermen. Just look at the bare feet, rolled up trousers, and 4 wheel drive Jeep.

I met John Kohr and his wife Esther (1914–2007) while she and I worked at Endicott College in Beverly. The was something about her that was vaguely aristocratic, but in an old fashioned gracious American way. I now know that she grew up in Provincetown and Truro. In fact, her ship captain uncle sailed in the China Trade, and another ancestor commanded a ship for the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and built the oldest still standing house in Truro. Previous ancestors came here on the Mayflower and established Truro. Husband John Kohr (1911–1999) was a graduate of MIT and invented an amazing product while he worked for Gorton’s: The Fish Stick!

Sea Again New & Consigned Fashion & Accessories

Discovering stores that specialize in second-hand items in the Gloucester-Rockport area has been an adventure, and I keep discovering more! Often I’ll go to one store, and they’ll refer me to another. Unfortunately some also have closed since I started this series of posts – “Stuff” on Main Street is gone, and “Junque and Disorderly” on Washington Street is in its last days.

When I visited Bub’s Tool Consignment I found out that the owner’s wife, Joelle Williams, also has a consignment store. Her store, Sea Again, is in Rockport (14 Dock Square) and focuses on women’s clothes and accessories, including both consignment and new items.

The store is open year-round, although the hours vary somewhat according to the season. The best place to check for updated hours is their Facebook page or their website.

Besides the consignment clothes, they sell new clothes and new Italian Sterling silver and crystal jewelry.

The sign out front isn’t very big, but the building (photo at right) is very distinctive if you know what you are looking for!

Pet of the Week- Nala

My name is Nala, a three-month-old female Great Pyrenees/Retriever mix.  I am at the Cape Ann Animal Aid (CAAA), located at the Christopher Cuter Rich Animal Shelter, Four Paws Lane, Gloucester.  My brother and I are both here and eager to find forever homes.  We will be large dogs and already have our fluffy cream-and-white coats.  I keep telling my brother that our dream of having a wonderful home, like our CAAA family will come true; he just needs to believe!

I have been asked to tell you about the 3rd Annual Golf Tournament to take place on Monday, September 23rd at Bass Rocks Golf Club in Gloucester, MA. The tournament features a day of golf followed by a celebration dinner with awards, prizes, and live auction. Players will receive a take-home gift and compete for top prizes and a special hole-in-one contest for a new car. Boats Wanted For Annual Lighted Boat Parade!!

Hi all-

I am just putting out a call to everyone for any assistance you can help with in getting people to participate in the Annual Lighted Boat Parade this year. Remember this is a nonprofit, volunteer effort so every little bit helps keep the event going.

We are asking Parade boats (with lights)  for this Saturday to meet up just before sunset, at the mouth of Jones Creek on the Annisquam River. They check in with a committee boat and pick up a number, if they want to be judged by the judges. Then we parade the boats down the river, through the bridge, past the Man on the Wheel and the judges boat, into the inner harbors and back to the main harbor for the Fireworks.  We continue to get low boat attendance, and need everyone to reach out through your avenues for participation. Including your Facebook pages etc. This has been a great tradition for the North Shore, Gloucester, as well as a nice complement to the Schooner Festival.

SIX PLAYS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE
Hear Cape Ann Talent read six original 10-minute plays

On September 22, 2013, at 7:30 pm, the GWC and M. Lynda Robinson will present Six Plays for the Price of One.  Six promising writers will debut six original plays at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck located on 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester Massachusetts. There is a suggested donation of ten dollars but nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.
 
This is the final step in the GWC’s 10-minute playwriting workshop. Following the staged readings the audience is suggested to provide feedback for the playwrights as well as asking any question they might have.   

Linda Hanley Finigan stated about her teacher and the 10 minute play workshop series that, “Lynda Robinson has an amazing ability to tease out the inherent drama and humor in just about anything she hears. The class is fast-moving and great fun. Her knowledge of theater is inspiring. Her ear for dialogue is perfect. The ten-minute play is a challenging format; Lynda is a terrific guide.”
 
With six different plays being preformed there is sure to be a story for everyone.  There are both comedies and dramas based upon a variety of subjects ranging from rest homes, and marriage, to the “dark lady” of William Shakespeare’s sonnets.  Come support Linda Hanley Finigan, Carole Frohlich, David McCaleb, M. Lynda Robinson, Jess Semeraro, and Joseph Stiliano in their creative endeavors.

The Gloucester Writers Center was founded in 2010 to save the late poet Vincent Ferrini’s home and turn it into a working writer’s center. Its mission is to preserve, promote, and celebrate Cape Ann’s rich literary legacy and to encourage writing and the belief that all voices count.

Hi Joey, Here rare photos from the Adventures first 2 shakedown sails. Captain Graham McKay was at the helm for both trips. Ryan Graham was the mate. The people hauling on the lines are hoisting the main sail, which sits atop a 65 ft boom, is 2100 square feet. The 4 sails total 5,500 square feet. Many thanks to Donny King who welcomed me aboard the Scotia Girl to capture the shots of the Adventure under way. The final shot was taken from Stage Fort Park with the Adventure taking down her sails. Mary Barker

This morning at 10 am the two Samaritans and their mothers came to my gallery to claim their rewards for finding $106 on Main Street and, with my assistance, it was returned to the owner. On the left are Paige and her mom Tracey Harmon, and on the right is Baylee with mom Mayor Carolyn Kirk. But the story of good deeds by these young ladies is not over – read on.

The envelopes are open, and the proud 13 year olds each display their $12.50 rewards.

Paige and Baylee with their small fortunes of reward money. What are they going to do with it? They told me they’re going straight to CVS, and spend it on toys to give to the Boston Children’s Hospital. Still making that good karma – that’s just who they are. You gotta love it!

Many thanks to Captains Tom and Heath Ellis, Kay Ellis, Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Paul Giacalone for hosting the 4th Annual Good Morning Gloucester Sunset Cruise aboard the elegant Schooner Thomas E. Lannon. Old friends and new enjoyed the beautiful harbor views, the superb cocktails and aged rum provided by Bob and Kathryn Ryan, and Cuban cigars from Paul Giacalone. We almost didn’t have Joey aboard as a lobster boat came in late, but the Ellis’s Zodiac provided last minute transport to the schooner.

I had never filmed on a schooner, or any boat for that matter, and it was So Much Fun.  I cannot wait to try it again!! Admittedly, I’ve only been on a boat less than half a dozen times (excluding the ferry to and from Martha’s Vineyard) and think I have been missing out on way too much. Thanks again Joey, Tom, Kay, Heath, Bob, Kathryn, Paul, and Ship’s Crew for a great night of fun and beauty aboard the gorgeous Schooner Lannon!

Kathy St. George and Kerry Dowling – 2 of the region’s most accomplished performers- will banter, bellow and bewilder in this special cabaret featuring songs from the Great American Songbook. Paul Frontiero (1925- 2012)

Paul Frontiero was born and brought up in Gloucester, a native of the Cape Ann area.  Paul not only comes from a long line of fishermen ancestry but was a fisherman himself, for over half of his life-time.

He fished from as far south as the Diamond Shoals of the Carolina’s to as far north as the Grand Banks off St. John’s, Newfoundland and Canada.

The many hours Paul spent in the small dories made him realize the expansiveness of the sea, at times so calm and then again a raging fury.  Although he painted other subject matter, most of his paintings are of his life on the sea.  As a boy on the boats, he would often rough pencil sketch on anything that was at hand – paper bags, old wooden planks, and even on the side of the same dories that he spent so many hours on.  Each and every painting has a spiritual quality that reveals Paul’s deep love for the sea.
