If You Ever Had a Doubt That Nat Geo Is Putting Serious Dinero Behind Wicked Tuna…

All You Have To Do Is Look at The Sick Gear They Are Using To Shoot It.

Listen, in the past 5 years with the incredible advances in camera technology every soccer mom in the universe thinks they are capable movie producers.

I can’t begin to tell you how many different production companies have come down to the docks pitching us on yet another idea for a reality show based on our dock and our lobstermen.

Most have their Canon Mark X with a Video shooting rig and all the L series lenses.  They want you to sign your life away, work for peanuts for the first season and do everything but tell you that they are going to make you look like a complete jackass. But hey, you’ll be on TV so it’s all good.  99% of them are jokers.

Not the team from EvolveIMG, the team who shoots Wicked Tuna.  They are the real deal and from this shot just inside the dogbar breakwater of the type of high tech gear they are using to shoot the next season of Wicked Tuna, you know this is a big budget, high quality outfit.

A Sunset Celtic Cruise on The Lannon

Rick and I enjoyed a wonderful evening on The Lannon on Saturday evening.  The Lannon is such a pretty boat. Kay and Tom with their great crew make you feel so comfortable and welcome.  The cruise at 5:30 -8:00 took all the stress away not just one day of stress but a lifetime.  Here a couple of pictures of our cruise.  When it was time to get off, just wanted to turn around and take another cruise.  Thank you Lannon.

Calling all Masters and Judges of Bloody Mary Mixology

bloody mary competition

If you missed the last one, you don’t want to miss this one.  If you were part of the last one, you’ll want to be part of this one too.  On Sunday, September 15th, Ryan & Wood Distilleries will be sponsoring the Biennial GMG Bloody Mary Competition during Mug Up at Khan Studio & the GMG Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck Ave., Gallery 3.  Mug Up starts at 9:30 and judging begins at 10:00.  Bring on a batch of your most creative Bloody Mary mix.  We will add the Beauport Vodka here so that all Bloody Marys contain the same high quality locally distilled vodka, and are of a consistent, acceptable strength (so no one stumbles out of here afterwards).

Speaking of judges, we are looking for a few good men and women with discriminating palates who know and love good Bloody Marys.  Ed Collard has already committed, but we need another 3 or 4 judges.  If you are interested in being a judge, please email me at khanstudio@comcast.net with your Bloody Mary judging credentials.  Fred, you’re already vetted, as is Maureen Malloy, if either of you are interested.  Paul Morrison, you’re a shoe-in.  We’re always looking for new blood for judgeships, so don’t be shy about applying – James Eves.

If you are interested in entering your amazing Bloody Mary mix in the competition, please  email me and let me know, so we’ll know how many entrants there will be.  Ryan & Wood will be providing great prizes on top of the world renown you will receive as the best Bloody Mary mixologists in the known GMG universe.  Kathy Chapman, Richard Rosenfeld, Talitha Jackson – you need to come back and defend your titles.

If you just want to come to Mug Up for the great comraderie and fun, feel free to bring along some Mug Up type fare to share.  There will be coffee and deviled eggs, per usual.

UPDATE: We now have Ed Collard, Fred Bodin, James Eves and Karen Ristuben confirmed as judges.  It would be great to have another female judge.

BREAKING NEWS 4:12pm: Kathy Downer of Long Beach is now our final judge for the competition.  She has impressive experience as a bartender trainer for 7 years and she ran a bartending school, and on rainy days when she used to be on the other Cape, she and her friends would barhop to find the best bloody mary.

Now we just need some blood mary makers to enter the competition.

A Premeditated Act of Kindness

A Premeditated Act of Kindness Catherine Ryan just walked in with a bouquet, and it was for me! How could I not get teary eyed. It is from her and Cliff, her husband. The occasion was my promotion within the Good Morning Gloucester community. I put my GMG hat in the photo and a heart shaped rock, representative of so much positive energy.

Residents Reminded to be Vigilant about Protecting Themselves from Mosquitoes

As we move into the later part of mosquito season, mosquito populations will start to decrease but older mosquitoes are also more likely to carry virus. It is essential that residents be reminded to be vigilant about taking all necessary steps to avoid mosquito bites. As Fall sports activities begin, residents are reminded that mosquitoes are highly attracted to both body heat and carbon dioxide and both are produced in higher amounts during physical activity.

The Cape Ann Boards of Health (Essex, Gloucester, Manchester and Rockport) reminds residents to take precautions when going outside so they can enjoy a happy and healthy fall.

West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) are two diseases carried by mosquitoes that you may have heard about.

·    West Nile Virus (WNV) is a disease most commonly spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people infected with WNV won’t have any symptoms and will recover on their own, but some may develop a fever, headache, nausea, a rash, or more serious symptoms.

To-date this year there have been over 200 positive WNV mosquito pools identified throughout Massachusetts, 0 positive horses and 2 human cases in Norfolk and Plymouth Counties.

·    Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is a very rare but serious disease caused by a virus transmitted through the bite of a mosquito. The first symptoms of EEE are fever, stiff neck, headache and lack of energy.

To-date this year there have been 32 positive EEE mosquito pools throughout Massachusetts, 3 positive horses and 1 human case in Norfolk County.

Local officials monitor mosquito activity and disease throughout the fall until a hard frost occurs and will advise residents if the risk changes.

The good news is that there are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from these diseases:
·    Use the right bug spray anytime you are outdoors.
o    With DEET but not more than 30% DEET for kids.
o    Oil of Lemon eucalyptus is natural and as effective as low concentrations of DEET, though not as long-lasting.
o    Be sure to read the label before applying.
·    Wear long-sleeves, pants and socks when possible.
·    Avoid the outdoors from dusk until dawn during peak mosquito biting times.
·    Repair all screens to keep mosquitoes out.
·    Drain standing water from places in your yard where mosquitoes can lay eggs and breed, such as flower pots, pet food and water dishes, birdbaths, swimming pool covers, tarps, buckets, barrels and cans.
·    Use mosquito netting over infant carriers when outdoors.

Regardless of whatever else is going on to control mosquitoes in your town, personal protection is your strongest defense against mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
