Hi Donna… looks like a black-crowned night heron. At one time they liked to roost on my boat in Manchester.

Hi Donna–I think you have spotted a Black-crowned Night Heron http://www.massaudubon.org/birdatlas/bba1/index.php?search=yes&id=39
The first time I ever saw one I was standing in a marshy area at dawn and heard a very loud QUAWK–very startling and almost dropped my video camera–there were several roosting in the tree right above me, and they all flew away at the first light of daybreak.

Thanks Kim: I think that is what it is, it is so funny that when I was waiting for the Memorial Day ceremony it was just standing out on the rocks.

Mature black crowned night heron-there were five in a tree at Niles Pond a week ago-including two immatures. You can see them at dusk on the river near the Blynman canal most evenings this time of year.

It sure is a funky looking bird.
They nest out on Ten Pound I think Laurel said one time.

Definitely a black crowned night heron. Great shot. They are usually very shy and elusive.
