This piece of mail gets through – 65 years later

History buffs in Gloucester have turned up a decades-old mystery involving the U.S Postal Service.

As amateur sleuth E.J. Lefavour posted on the GoodMorningGloucester blog over the weekend, a correspondent named H. Grimsland of Chicago mailed a First Day of Issue Roosevelt Memorial envelope and 1-cent stamps to Mrs. S.E. Lawrence of 123 Leonard St. in Gloucester on July 26, 1945.

That may not seem too remarkable — but the envelope only arrived in Annisquam last week, more than 65 years later, according to Lefavour.

Topside Grill GMG Art Show This Season- David Cox

Doug Silva who has been making some fantastic changes as manager at his father’s Topside Grill invited our posse to fill the newly renovated space with our photos.  If you haven’t heard by now from Paul Morrison’s Seasonal Restaurant Openings list,  The Topside will be opening April 1st.

We stopped by Saturday morning to drop off our work and I’ll be posting some images of each of our contributors with their pieces all week long.  You can check it all out for yourself (and get some great grub) on the 1st at Topside grill.

Katherine changed the windows to a spring medley last Monday.  Richard dropped a note to find some photos of Liz for the window.  I found the pics, framed them, draped the window base in black, found some white diamonds and a horse for our Velvet Brown.

Nathan Bransford has spoken. He says it’s never too early for writers to start using social media. Perhaps one day we’ll all be issued Twitter accounts in the womb.

Since Nathan is a Thought Leader in our industry (according to Klout) I have a feeling a lot of writers are scrambling around this weekend, trying to set up blogs.

We’re Looking For More Members To The GMG Flickr Group

By now if you’ve been reading GMG for any amount of time and clicked on any of the pictures you know that I host the pictures you see on the blog on my Flickr page.

From the Flickr page I can transfer the pictures you see here to the blog and search for different photos by title or subject matter.

I highly recommend Flickr as a place to host your pictures online for several reasons-

  • For one, if you upload your pictures and add titles and tags to them you can always find them.
  • You can do searches within your photostream and create sets and slide shows based on the name tags you enter for each picture when you upload them.
  • If you upload your favorite pictures to an online photo hosting service like Flickr it doesn’t matter if your computer shits the bed because the pictures will be hosted on the Flickr servers so you don’t have to worry about losing them all when your computer becomes obsolete or crashes.

The reason I bring all this up and the point of this post is that I created a Good Morning Gloucester Group on Flickr in which you can join if you have a free Flickr account.   When you upload your pictures to Flickr  you have the ability to send them to different Groups (Good Morning Gloucester Group being one of them).  So we have our own community group of GMG  pictures and if you add a Gloucester-centric picture to the GMG group I’ll likely add it to the Blog and give you credit.

It’s super easy to do with a click of a button once you join Flickr for free and upload a pic.

So open up a Flickr account, get to adding your pics and then join the Good Morning Gloucester Flickr Group

Joey C and many folks around town are providing a wake up call for businesses to adopt Social Media. I agree that almost every business should list themselves and interact on facebook and twitter. The one thing that you should also do is not forget about some of traditional methods that have been successful building your business.  This week I got an ACTUAL HAND WRITTEN THANK YOU note for a cleaning of my septic tank. Not only did they do a great job, but sent me a thank you with a magnet. With this magnet, there is no doubt who I am going to call when you know what hits the fan.

Possible Harbor Porpoise update

Hi Joey!
My name is Molly Kelleher and I’m currently a sophomore marine biology
student at the University of New England up in Biddeford, Maine. I’m
from Beverly, MA, and love your blog! Here at UNE we have a Marine
Animal Rehabilitation Center (MARC) and we are currently full of harp
and harbor seals, turtles and a harbor porpoise! This juvenile
porpoise is only 55 pounds and 47 inches long! She was stranded up in
Saugus, MA. Maybe this was the little porpoise that was spotted out
off the dock In Gloucester around St. Patty’s??

That before I even moved to Cape Ann, I was being positively influenced by the inspiring energy of Joey Ciaramitaro through reading Good Morning Gloucester?  The man is a non-stop package of powerful positive energy, a goodwill ambassador for Cape Ann, and a guru of social networking; but I only knew the Good Morning Gloucester side of him.  I’ve gotten to know him personally now, learned a little about his family history and wanted to share it with those GMG readers that might not know. 

Joey’s Grandfather, Captain Joe Ciaramitaro was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 6, 1915. He was two years old when his father died. His family then went back to Sicily where he learned to fish. At the age of fifteen he returned to the United States and settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts where he fished on several trawlers.  Captain Joe met and married Felicia Curcuru at the age of 23 in 1938. With the help of Ben Curcuru, Captain Joe had his first boat built – the “Ben and Josephine”.
The Ben and Josephine was launched in March of 1941, however the vessel was sunk off the coast of Maine by a German U-Boat.  When Captain Joe tried to board the Ben and Josephine to get the compass out, the Germans thought he was going to radio their location to the Coast Guard. They shot at him with machine guns so he came out of the Pilot House with his hands in the up and without the compass.  The crew of the Ben and Josephine got into the lifeboat and rowed for 36 hours and finally landed at Mt. Desert Rock off the coast of Maine. Navigating by the stars of the night, Captain Joe led his crew to shore after a day and a half of rowing.
The next boat built for built by Captain Joe was the “Benjamin C”. The Benjamin C was launched in 1946. He fished the Benjamin C from 1946 to 1952. The boat was then sold to National Sea Products of Nova Scotia.  In 1953, Captain Joe bought the former Slade Gorton property on East Main Street. The property was used as a smokehouse, salted fish house, fillet house and flakeyard. It was then that Captain Joe & Sons was formed.
In the 60′s and 70′s, Captain Joe & Sons, Inc. was known for processing whiting and the company supplied A&P grocery stores throughout the United States. The company was run by Captain Joe and his two sons, Benjamin (Libby) and Charles Ciaramitaro.
In the mid-70s Joe (our Joey C.) & Frank Ciaramitaro joined the company to form the third generation. Joe and Frank worked summers until they graduated from college to work full time along with their fathers.  As Joey tells it, their fathers paid them slave wages, so they decided to do a little lobster brokering on the side to make a little extra money.  The Captain Joe & Sons fleet has since grown to handle the fish and lobsters of 37 fishing boats and 39 lobster boats.

Seasonal Openings of Cape Ann 2011: Part III

Friday, March 25, , Nate’s of Front Beach Rockport It’s open. What’s better than fluffy pancakes and a walk on the beach?

Friday April 1, The Lobster Pool of Rockport 11:30 AM Friday. You might find me on Saturday, April 2nd with my BYOB six pack and some fried scallops and fried clams at the picnic table closest to the guitar watching the boats entering Folly Cove. It might be snowing. I will still be there.

Friday, April 1, Topside Grill opens. The dining room is completely renovated but the martinis have not changed. Opening Day party with music by John Jerome. Then Tuesdays are always Oyster night. Check out the Good Morning Gloucester artwork on the walls.

Saturday, April 2, Top Dog of Rockport opens for the eleventh season. A clam roll at a picnic table outside. That is my official start of the season. Might be chilly so go for a Hot Chihuahua Dog with Chili Cheese Fries.

Thursday, April 14, Lobsta Land Restaurant opens. Even though their website says “thanks for a great season” still, the news has leaked out. Just say “Lobsta Land!” out loud. I feel better already.

Friday, April 15, Captain Carlo’s opens with Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents playing that evening. Your taxes are in. Time to celebrate.

Still looking for definitive opening dates on the following which had these for opening dates in 2010: The Rudder: April 15, The Cupboard: May 6, Popo’s Gourmet Hot Dogs, and  Surfside Subs on Thacher Road, all around April 27.

And although The Ice Cream Store of Bearskin Neck, Rockport does not have a specific opening date they get a mention because they made a Facebook Page today. Open soon. If your business starts a Facebook or a Twitter account and you keep it up to date with cool announcements you get the Joey C Star of Approval with special mention on the GMG blog.
