Seasonal Openings Part II

More openings:

Popo’s Gourmet Hot Dogs on Rogers Street open.
Nate’s at Front beach open.
What used to be Frank’s Subzone now Surfside Subs on Thacher Road open.
Captain Carlo’s open

And to repeat from part I

Topside Grill open (Tuesday is Oyster night)
Top Dog on Bearskin Neck open
The Rudder open Thursday to Saturday
Lobster Pool open (see video of seafood quesadilla on this blog)
Lobsta Land open (at 5:30AM for breakfast too!)

And last but not least the Cupboard will be opening May 1.

From Fred Bodin’s suggestions I had to go to Topside Grill and Captain Carlo’s and neither disappointed. The only complaint was from my bathroom scale the next day. I may have to walk the Blackburn Challenge on the sea floor.

Topside Grill on Tuesday. Oh I love oysters. I love them so much my iPhone photo is just a pile of shells. But I did snap a photo of my martini. I only needed one of these.

Captain Carlo’s was a treat from the parking lot to the check. We were walking up and a gruff old guy was getting to the door before us. (Not really that gruff or that old but he may have pulled his share of lobster pots.) He held the door and waved us all in with a “Welcome to Captain Carlo’s!” The whole place was like that. Are these people hired as method actors to give the place the salty friendly atmosphere? It works. I can imagine on a warm night the back deck is the place to be.
Fun Fact: Captain Carlo’s is named in honor of Capt. Carlo Ciaramitaro. Now where have I heard that name before?

I really have to cut back on the caloric intake but I want to go back to all of them and hit all these new places. I don’t think I can even be called a tourist if I haven’t had the fried clams at the Cupboard yet.

Keep the names of seasonal opening coming.

Inside The Numbers- GMG Daily Views 4/26/10

If you saw the stats yesterday you will notice the jump up from Sunday’s numbers to Monday’s numbers just as I predicted based on the trends.  I wish there was a way to quantify the people that have subscribed and only get the feed at the end of the day but they don’t show up in these stats.

Poll- Is Being A Meat Eater And Animal Lover at The Same Time Being Hypocritical?

Please Read  the Blog post by Diana Adams Before You Vote-

How To: Kill A Lobster In A Humane Way

I know I’m probably going to get some crazy comments on this article, but this is a topic that has strangely become important to me. I love to eat meat and until very recently I could never ever imagine being a vegetarian.

Aside from chicken wings, one of my favorite things to eat is lobster. As you know, in order for lobster to be yummy, you have to buy them when they are alive and then kill them during the cooking process.

I always place the lobsters in the kitchen sink while I boil the water. I see their big eyeballs staring at me, and sometimes my son will give them names, which makes this whole situation worse. Every time I drop them in the boiling water I cry for a moment because I see them flap around, until they are suddenly still, and dead. I took the picture above as I watched them cook.

I am an animal lover. All the meat I eat comes from an animal that has lost his life so I can consume him. Am I a hypocrite for feeling this way and also eating meat? Probably. I realize we are at the top of the food chain, but isn’t there a moral obligation to lessen the pain for the animals we kill? After all, we are supposed to be of a higher consciousness, right?

Click the link above to read the rest of her blog post about how she now kills her lobsters a certain way before eating them to make her feel better about it in her mind.

I personally think that killing a lobster is killing a lobster just as killing a cow is killing a cow and unless you are consciously malicious in your mind when doing so than it’s all semantics and that we’re meat eaters- get over it.   But I do appreciate that in the end she’s gonna eat that goddamn lobster!

I’m gonna eat that lobster, I’m gonna eat that burger and I don’t really care how it gets to my plate as long as it’s tasty.

Oh and BTW I don’t believe that by electrocuting them by way of Crustastun or putting them in the freezer and then slicing them open with a knife is any more or less humane than boiling or steaming them.  I think these other methods are more about making people like Diane fell less guilty.  If that’s what it takes go for it.

Who Wants to Hop Skip and Go Nekkid With Your Boy Joey?

click poster for full sized version

Thursday Night we are having a blow out to “Celebrate Gloucester” at Lat 43.  Mark McDonough asked me to put together a movie of man on the street “Why I love Gloucester interviews” which we will show during the evening.  There are going to be free I Heart Gloucester Bumper stickas.  There’s going to be contests and giveaways.   Also there have been a bunch of folks who will be celebrity bartenders.  I’ve also been asked to fill a shift as a celebrity bartender.  My shift will be at 8:30PM if any of my peeps (that means you if you’re reading this) want to come by and show some love.

So let’s get to the good part shall we?  The Hop Skip and Go Nekkid Part.   I knew you wanted to so I won’t bore you with the rest of the details til later on in the post.

This morning at 3:30AM it struck me!  I shot up out of bed with an eureka moment!   I was semi-sweating the celebrity bartender part as I’m no mixologist but y’all know when I have a project I come big!   So this past weekend we had a dinner party at the house of some very special friends- The Foster’s.  The Foster’s served up Hop, Skip and Go Nekkid’s at the dinner party and not only did they serve them, but they served them in Mason Jars!  What’s better than drinking out of mason jars FFS!  so I put in numerous emails and phone calls til I got to my boy McDonough to get the green light for the purchase of several cases of Mason Jars!   He being a man of great wisdom and vision whole heartily agreed with my plan to have each celebrity bartender create a signature drink for the evening.

What’s in a Hop, Skip and Go Nekkid you ask?  Well since you asked I’ll tell ya- Beauport Vodka, Lemonade and Beer!  You can’t even taste the booze but they get you shithammered in a hurry!  You’re gonna love em, trust me!

So make sure all you hot bitches and hos make your way to Lat 43 Thursday night and Party like a rockstar with your boy.

Now for all the other stuff-

Lat 43’s official Press release-

Celebrating Gloucester – Raising Funds for Rebuilding Newell Stadium

On Thursday, April 29, the community of Gloucester will come together at Latitude 43 to celebrate all the people, organizations and places that make this such a great community.  Although one never needs a reason to have a good time, on the 29th of April we will be partying with a purpose!  The goal of this celebration is to raise funds for The Gloucester Fishermen Athletic Organization (GFAA) in their efforts to keep Gloucester sports alive.  More specifically, the event will help raise funds for the GFAA to offset the continually rising price of sports user fees, thereby increasing access to and participation in youth sports programs, regardless of family income or individual athletic ability.

Mark McDonough, owner of Latitude 43, decided to do a fund raiser for the GFAA after hearing of the cause from Gordon Baird when asked to design the poster for the “Battle of the Bands.”  “I never felt like I had a home town until I moved to Gloucester,” McDonough says, “I’ve never seen a town with as much heart as Gloucester.  We fight a lot over the schools, the fort, the police, the firemen, the hospital, harbor, the traffic patterns, whatever.  But it’s because we care.  I think that our passionate love of our community is worth highlighting and celebrating.”

And, of course, Gloucester loves a party – a block party, a high school super bowl party, a fiesta party, a beach party, a private party.  We love to party.  “That’s why it makes so much sense to raise money for the GFAA with a party.  We may have our issues, and it seems the whole universe knows it, but we love this place and we love to celebrate the GOOD of this island like nobody else,” says Jennifer Goulart Amero, Director of Events and Marketing for the restaurant group.  “We’re going to focus on the positive and make this a fun and memorable evening for a something else we love – Fisherman sports.”

“Latitude is providing free food.  There will be free tasting booths by Gloucester’s own spirit mastes Ryan and Wood Distillery and Fishermen’s Brew.  Joey Ciaramitaro, blog-meister of “Good Morning Gloucester” will unveil his latest video of “man on the street” interviews answering the question, “Why I Love Gloucester…”  Local DJ Leo Francis will be spinning tunes and a host of celebrity bartenders will be serving drinks with all tips going to the GFAA.  Celebrity bartenders include Joe Ciaramitaro, Sefatia Romeo Theken, Geoffrey Richon, Deborah Coull, Ruth Pino, Lenny Linquata, Vito Giacalone, members of the Gloucester School Committee, and more.  A prize raffle including a fully catered graduation party, signed sports memorabilia and other terrific items will contribute to the potential for funds, as well as a 50/50 raffle and I Heart Gloucester T-shirt sales (part of a summer long positive image campaign and long-term sports fundraiser) will add to the mix to help raise even more money, keeping user fees down for even more kids.

$5 at the door goes directly to the GFAA for this year’s user fees.  A 50-50 raffle will go half to athletic fees and half to a lucky winner.  GFAA has organized a silent auction and Jen Waitkus manager of Lat 43 has devised her own raffle for raising funds:

    • FIRST PRIZE: Free Catered Graduation Party valued at $500
    • SECOND PRIZE: Sushi & Spirits Gift Basket with Ryan & Wood Spirits& Latitude 43 Sushi
    • THIRD PRIZE: Beer Lover’s Bash Gift Basket with Fisherman’s Brew & 10 lbs Lat 43 Wings

Current student user fees are between $295 and $395 per sport, a seriously prohibitive amount for many families.  Furthermore, most students play more than one sport within each school year, which increases the financial burden carried by each family.  The increasing cost is the result of a decrease in funding for school sports and the school committee’s efforts to make athletics self-funding.  The GFAA’s creation was prompted by the imbalance in cost and funding, and their sole purpose is to raise money toward universal decreases in user fees for all sports.  According to Jonathon Pope of the GFAA “what happens is top tier athletes will find funding.  It’s the third stringers or the kids that only go in when the team is winning who choose not to pay the fees to play.  So only the stars athletes are out there.  Participation is down all across the board.  We want every kid to get a chance to play, whether they are stars or not.  That’s what we work for”.

Inside the GMG Numbers- Top Ten Views 4/25/10

Here’s a sneak peek inside some of the stats I look at daily to see what types of posts interest our readers.  Sunday is our slowest readership day as most folks have stuff they are doing and I figure that a ton of people check in daily while they are at their desk jobs at work during the week.  I just highlighted the top ten but this list represents only a tiny fraction of the entire list.  As you go down the list each different post has fewer and fewer numbers of views til you get down to the 1’s.

Beautiful Beat Up Old Shell Slide Show

Click the Picture For The Slide Show

This shell was sitting along the side of the building right next to the ladder where Pete Mondello ties up his boat.  I must have walked past it a hundred times.  But this particular time I took that extra second to stop and appreciate it’s beauty.  There is beauty all around us and all it takes is for us to slow down just a little bit and recognize how lucky we are to have all this natural charm surrounding us.  So much so that we practically trip over it every single day.

Sharon stopped down the dock last weekend and while I was busy and wished I had more time to talk to her, there were boats coming and going.  During the little time we had to talk though she told me that she was having a hard time because she’s been extremely busy and hasn’t been able to come up with ideas for her daily posts.  I understand how people’s lives get busy and sometimes we get so focused on what we have to do in our daily lives just to get through that we only focus on the mundane tasks of chores and errands and work.  But in there I’m telling you there is beauty.  A shell on the walkway- a flower in bloom- a boat heading out to sea- a community event- a fantastic meal-a child’s smile-a baseball being struck-it’s everywhere.

I hear it from our other contributors too, that they have a difficult time coming up with ideas for content for the blog.  I must be gifted because as long as I’m in town, coming up with content for the blog is never a problem for me.  It just comes natural.  It’s as easy as walking out the door with my camera, slowing down just a tiny bit and opening my eyes.  Boom- there’s a post.

Is the water 50 F yet?

Bluefish don’t like cold cold water. They like 50 degrees Fahrenheit or above. The buoy just south of Cape Ann in Massachusetts Bay almost got there this weekend:

04-24 4:00 PM 49.3 , 49.1
04-24 4:30 PM 49.4
04-24 5:00 PM 49.0 , 49.0

First number is the surface, second is two meters down. That means that blues coming up from the south will be arriving soon. Smoked bluefish pate, fresh bluefish on the grill, pan fried bluefish in panko. I love a fresh bluefish. Catching one on a popper off the point makes the bluefish tastier. I’m one of those weird people who prefer fresh bluefish over a striped bass. Although I will not push myself from the table if there was a keeper striper bake stuffed with scallops and clams on a big plate on the table.

Three days after buying the house I walked down to the point and caught a blue on a surface popper. About six the wife comes down for coffee and I told her to look in the fridge. As she opened the door the blue jumped off the plate. A fresh fish is priceless as was her reaction.

That one was grilled with scallions and a little Teriyaki.

ps. It’s official GoMOOS A at 2PM today officially hit 50F
