166 Days to the Blackburn Challenge

Only 166 days before the Blackburn Challenge race all the way around Cape Ann by oar or paddle. Sitting here on a frigid Sunday morning it seems a long way off. I am publicizing that I will be in the race so that when race day dawns I actually get out of bed and get down to the Gloucester High School parking lot and go. If I chicken out I want non stop ridicule.

I’ve been messing around with my Mobileme account which is Apple’s way of adding some cute tricks to the iPhone. I can “find my phone” which shows a google map and indeed, it shows that it is in my car in my driveway. That’s kind of neat. If I can find a way to post a link to that google map without having to open my mobileme account to the public I will do that on race day. That way there might be someone tracking me as I meander around the island. And if I stop at Bearskin Neck to have a raisin cinnamon roll at Helmut’s Strudel you can stop there and taunt me until I get my butt back in my boat.

  1. Went to Duckworth’s last night and had some amazing food as always. Waiting at the bar for a table Mrs Duckworth (I’m just guessing) made someone an expresso martini and so the adults at our table had that for dessert.

Wow. Tasty. Throw the following in a martini shaker until foamy and pour into a martini glass:

    1 oz cold espresso
    1 1/2 oz Absolut® vodka
    1 1/2 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur
1 oz white creme de cacao

  2. Imagine how that cocktail would have been with “Beauport” or another U.S. craft distilled Vodka. Keep those “Dollars” on this continent and Cape Ann.
Go to the web pages of Pernod Ricard (of France, Absolut), and Bacardi (of Bermuda, Grey Goose), and the largest, Diagio (of England, Kettle One, Smirnoff) and look at all their liquor brands.
I know they create delivery, sales, and other jobs etc. But I hope to also.
By the way, we will be bottling the Rum Tuesday or Wednesday!!

  3. Woops, I just copied and pasted off a web site and forgot to change the recipe to good local stuff named after Samuel Champlain’s name for the beautiful harbor of Gloucester, “le beau port”.

    Amended:
In a shaker containing ice add:
    1 oz cold espresso
    1 1/2 oz 80 proof Beauport Vodka
    1 1/2 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur
1 oz white creme de cacao
Shake vigorously until frothy. Decant through a strainer into chilled martini glasses. Add three chocolate coated coffee beans to the froth and serve.

The three chocolate coffee beans were expertly placed by Mrs Duckworth.
