Paddleboard race in Gloucester | Cape Ann SUPahBowl vision for a new sporting event was a HUGE success!

Cape Ann SUPahBowl, Gloucester’s biggest paddle board racing event, brought more than 60 contestants to Pavilion Beach at Beauport Hotel early this morning. It was a rainy start but gave way to a beautiful day on Gloucester Harbor.

Congratulations on a such an amazing launch Cape Ann SUP! And to all who pulled this together including Beauport HotelHigh 5EM event management company, Barefoot Wine (the largest wine spritzer company in the country I was told- who knew?),  One Ocean One Love retail shop, and a big family of volunteers and staff.

The race had staggered starts for 4 various classes: elite, amateur, open and kids. The elites kicked it off and had the longest distance course.  The video shows the start of the first two groups heading off to turn right… at the Greasy Pole! Coast guard and police boats were on hand and a paddle board pit stop at each buoy should any help be necessary. Photos from today’s event below.

Returning Racers

Racers return to Pavilion Beach after grueling courses. Cape Ann SUP (red t-shirts) staff wait to carry and beach each and every board as contestants dismount and sprint –carrying their paddles — through to the official finish line and timer.

Ashley and Caren from HIGH 5EM event management handled the times (I’ll post to results)

BEFORE THE RACE

Vinnie, Dominic’s dad (white shirt),  worked throughout the event (setting up finish line here with High 5em!) and worked through the celebration. “It’s a family effort and affair,” he said speaking to how the race is put on and who it caters to. There was a tremendously positive vibe!

Ocean diamonds summer beach day

Seriously glistening summer day. Cape Ann SUP kypads are really holding up: we’re going on two years of steady use, after renting and taking lessons from Dominic. Gloucester is lucky to have several water sport shopping options. Besides Cape Ann SUP, we’ve had surf lessons, rented and purchased wetsuits (for guests, too) from Surfari on 210 Main Street. Cape Ann Divers in (Shaw’s) Cape Ann Marketplace is another place we’ve purchased various beach essentials and wetsuits.

A Fan’s Fan

This guy, this gentleman, is what it is all about. I love Fenway Park.   I love the sounds, the colors, the energy, the air, the motion, the memories, the stories….and the people. I like baseball (the players, the game, the history)….but, I LOVE the park and the stories of the fans who fill it. Two, in my book, very different things that, when coupled, create the most quintessential and perfect of New England days/nights. Goosebumps.

This gentleman is a fan who embodies generations of Fenway Faithful and I am so happy to have had to opportunity to share 9 innings of baseball with him last week. Honestly, every fan, young and old, should be so lucky as to share an inning of baseball with someone as dedicated and storied as him. Our first exchange was an awkward, “Excuse me. Sorry. Boys, be careful. Ok, sit down. Oops, sorry. Sigh. Hi.” After having troubled him to stand up, with a fair amount of effort, I was certain to place myself next to him rather than one of the boys with their sodas, gloves, balls, programs, and wiggly bodies. I sat somewhat sideways so as to give him as much space as possible…and to create a natural barrier between him and the endless assault of questions coming from Finn. We sat like that, with no further exchanges until the bottom of the 2nd. I wish I could remember who was at bat, when this nice, previously silent man, shouted, “Come on, you BUM!” and then smiled and added, “Sorry, boys, I’m not very nice sometimes.”

And….with that….our more frequent dialogue began.

As it turned out, the game we were watching side by side that Monday evening was his fourth game in four days. He was at the 16-inning Sox/Yankees game on Saturday and, yes, stayed for the entire game. “Unfortunately,” he was sure to add…because they lost. He was at the first game of Sunday’s double-header….and had also attended Friday’s game. Same seat? “No. Different seats each time. They had me in some obstructed view seats the last couple of games” he said while waving his hand in no particular direction. Shameful, I couldn’t help but think.

After some more silence I asked where he lived. I felt like I really wanted to envision the trip he had made four days in a row, alone, to get to those games….although I can’t really explain why. Well, I live in California now, but I’m home to visit. Of course most of the family I visit are in the cemetery now. I fly home in a couple of days and am going to see the Red Sox play the Angels…and then I’ll head up to Seattle to see the Mariners game next.

He went back to watching the game. I sat and contemplated all that traveling…all those innings…and how happy the game of baseball and the Red Sox must make him. And how that passion had probably shaped his life…

At one point he glanced my way for a split second and said, “You seem pretty knowledgeable about baseball.” I can’t lie…I may have blushed… coming from him. As I began to tell him a little bit about my time in the park and some of the things I had done, it quickly occurred to me that there was nothing I could say that would warrant taking his attention off the battle that was ensuing between the mound and the plate….so I allowed my answer to trail off into the wind. He didn’t seem to notice that I stopped talking…and I liked him all the more for it.

Later I asked, “How many games do you figure you’ve been to in all?” With a laugh he looked up and around the park and remained thoughtful just long enough for me to feel like he was having a brief walk down Memory Lane….and then began to answer. Well, I first started coming to games in the 40s. I worked here in the park in the 60s. I saw Game 7 in ’75. I’ve seen more than 300 hockey games, some Stanley Cups, some Super Bowls, and have gone to the Kentucky Derby three times. But, how many baseball games? I can’t count.

Wow. I mean, really…..wow.

My favorite thing though about this fan was the juxtaposition of his rough exterior and his sentimental love of the sport. He would go from, “Oh COME ON! YOU STINK!” to being the very first person on his feet to sing, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” or join along in clapping (each and every time) to, “Let’s Go, Red Sox!” There didn’t seem to be a second of the game that he didn’t experience completely and he seemed more in the moment than any other fan I’ve ever met.

The game ended far too soon….as there was so much more about him that I wanted to learn. The crowd around us began to disappear and the boys and I gathered up our things. He did not budge. We climbed over the seats in front of us and said a quick “good-bye.” I turned around once to steal a photo as his was a face I didn’t want to forget and caught him taking notes about the game while waiting for everyone else to go home. If anyone ever deserved to have Fenway Park to himself for a few minutes…it was him.

As the week progressed I thought of him often. While watching the Sox verse the Angels and then the Mariners on TV, I found myself scanning the crowd for his familiar face. Was he shouting, singing, cursing, laughing…..was he sharing his love of the game with yet another fan who would be forever grateful for the opportunity?

Thank you, Mr. Section 27, Row 3, Seat 20.  May your life continue to be a Grand Slam, sir. May your bases be loaded, your pitch counts low, and your walk-offs frequent.

Way cool NE Beach Soccer Cup at Good Harbor Beach June10 also benefits GHS soccer and FYS

“The New England Beach Soccer Cup tournament is not just about crowning a champion, but more importantly giving back to the community.

This year, all of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Fishermen Youth Soccer as well as the Gloucester High School Soccer Boosters.

These two organizations have been instrumental in the development of thousands of young student-athletes and soccer players and have played a vital part in the community for several decades. We’re so happy to be able to give back to these deserving organizations and re-invest in our youth and community!”

We can’t be there because of a Fishermen Youth Soccer game this Saturday–AWAY AWAY as in Haverhill– but we’ll check out that this cool new add-on: LIVE streaming the event!

Divots, Chukkers, and Mallets….Oh My!

It being Sunday and all, I thought I’d remind you of a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon during the summer.  Polo.

I know as much as anyone that it is hard to tear yourself away from the beach, boat, deck, or backyard BBQ on a sunny afternoon during the precious and all too fleeting summer months, but, if you’re up for something a tiny bit different, taking in a Polo match is really quite fun!

I’d like to add, however, that better than simply doing it….is doing it right!

The best way to do it is to gather a bunch of your friends, grab a chunk of tailgate space on the sidelines, pack the picnic of all picnics, stuff a cooler to capacity and have a lovely afternoon.  Despite popular belief, holding your pinky up while drinking is actually optional.  The polo crowd is quite mixed and quite lovely.  Ummm….and to any single ladies who happen to be reading….you could probably find a less attractive bunch of athletes elsewhere. Just saying. I should add that there are some pretty rad female players too.  I, for one, would LOVE to learn the game.

My boys enjoy walking around and meeting the players and ponies before the match begins.  I’ve yet to meet a player who wasn’t friendly and more than happy to let the boys ask questions and meet the horses.  They also get a kick out of replacing the divots in-between chukkers….often times barefoot. (Insert mild shutter….horse poop and all).

CrossFit Cape Ann – Not Your Average Joe’s Competition

CrossFit Cape Ann put a team together from Gloucester to compete in the “Not Your Average Joe’s Competition” in Danvers. (I thought at first daughter Whitney had invited me for lunch..) CrossFit Teams from many of the area gyms came together to compete in weightlifting and rowing events. Competing for the first time in this event and not knowing what to expect, the team placed well landing in the middle of the pack of over about 40 teams.

Manchester Essex Falls to Northeast in Semi-Final Football Action

A tough day on Saturday for the Hornets as they fell in semi-final action to Northeast Metropolitan 38-12. Behind 14-6 at the half, the defense played long and hard in the second half and held for several exciting stops but the offensive team could only find the end zone one more time. A good season for the Hornets comes to an end, but memories of how far they got in the tournament should be an inspiration at the start of next season!

Manchester Essex Field Hockey wins Semi Final!

Playing on a neutral field at Reading High School, the Manchester Essex Hornets took on the Ipswich Tigers in  MIAA State Field Hockey Tournament Semi-Finals. In a hard fought first half the Tigers broke through first for a 1-0 lead but before halftime  the Hornets were able to score the equalizer. In the second half both teams continued playing great defense and getting/allowing few scoring opportunities. The Hornets held a decided edge in penalty corners but had a tough time converting for scores.  Manchester Essex did get a few more chances and managed to make one count for the 2-1 lead.  The Hornets worked hard to preserve the win despite a strong finishing Ipswich attack. The Hornets move on to the finals of the State Tournament where they will face the perennial powerhouse Watertown. Game will be played at North Andover High School Saturday November 9th at 11:00.

Manchester Essex Football Win 22-8 Make Championship Tournament!

With a 22-18 win over the Amesbury Indians Friday night at Hyland Field, the Manchester Essex Hornets secured their place in the post season playoffs. Coming from behind several times in the game, the Hornets fought back and put it away with a touchdown and 2 point conversion with less than 40 seconds left to play. A key to the win had to be the late 4th quarter defensive stop made by the Hornets on a 3rd and VERY short attempt by Amesbury setting up the offense with good field position and just enough time.

Family Ties Golf Event

Family Ties put on their 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Ferncroft Country Club.  It was a beautiful day on the course. This event was made possible due to our great sponsors.  A big thank you to Dunkin Donuts, TRU services, Prattys CAV, Citizens Bank, Life Solutions Group, Mass Mutual, and Woburn Toyota.

Family Ties is a non profit created to benefit the local families of Cape Ann that have been affected by cancer.  We use the proceeds of our efforts to aid the families financial and emotionally through the tough times that cancer brings to their lives.

We would also like to thank our special guest Mike Watson; long drive champion who donated his drives on hole #4, a 360 yard par 4 where he reached the green consistently throughout the day.

Thank you to Thom Falzarano for donating his time to take all of the amazing pictures of the event.

The tournament ended with a sudden death card off between last year’s champs and Drew Dominick’s team (Drew Dominick, Nate Levie, JD Aspesi, Dean Babine).  In the end Mike Pratt, Anthony Ellis, Tony Grillo, and Billy Suppa took first place as repeat champions.

Also congratulations to Jason Balzarini for longest drive and Joe Nguyen for closest to the pin honors.

Gran Prix of Gloucester Before and After

I am fully supportive of the Gran Prix, the quality of the people it brings here and what they put back into the community between the businesses that benefit and the showcasing of our City as a venue for world class events.  Make no mistake about it, these athletes travel from all over the world to participate.

They have demonstrated that they leave the park in better shape than when they arrive. (Pictures don’t lie homie),  and show that they are willing to listen to, and work with the powers that be to insure that people are left happy.

621668_518901381467193_1660419780_o

Race organizer Paul Boudreau writes-

In late September 2012, we had the 14th edition of the Gran Prix of Gloucester bike race at Stage Fort Park. The conditions were brutal: rain fell almost continuousy for both race days. The competitors relished racing in those conditions. For the organizers, we knew this meant more work to restore the park.

You may have heard about some of the issues the race is having via articles in the Gloucester Daily Times.  There have been meetings between our organization and the City that have highlighted several issues with the way repairs have been handled. Importantly, we’ve identified some areas where communication between the City Council, the Parks Department and our organization was lacking and are doing our best to turn this situation around.

Some residents highlighted several areas where the park needs improvement. Armed now with specific, actionable items, we have every confidence that these issues have either been addressed or will be when the ground thaws and more work can begin. We’ve invested significantly more funds this year into post-event landscaping, with more to come. (We hire local landscapers Wolf Hill, by the way).

The Gran Prix of Gloucester’s mission is to take care of Stage Fort Park. We love that park. I take my own kids there.    After the race, we visit the park several times a month to check the progress and ensure that conditions are improving.   Each Spring, the park looks beautiful and we have not received any complaints until now.

We are committed to continue work with the Parks Department and the City Council so the park conditions are satisfactory and the event can continue.

Finally, below are some numbers about our event’s economic impact from Bentley University (they managed the data collection and tabulation for impartiality).

We had a good meeting with the Chamber of Commerce and we’re receiving some positive testimonies  from area motels & inns regarding the benefits of hosting this event in Gloucester.

Regards,

Paul Boudreau

Race Director, Gran Prix of Gloucester

Data:
• 40% of GP Gloucester poll respondents indicated that they used accommodations other than their home prior to the race.
• The money spent on accommodations is in the range of $101-200 (19%) and $201-300 (20%)
• The number one category of spending in the city of Gloucester was on Dining.
• The average amount spent on Dining by respondents on dining was in the neighborhood of $66.
• Majority of those who participated in the Gran Prix of Gloucester are in the 30-39 and 40-49 age range (a combined 60% of participants)

The report identified that racers were not leaving the park during the race, so they weren’t buying food in town. However, all but one food vendor at GP Gloucester is from town.
