Fast Facts:  Gloucester beat Danvers in overtime 67 to 58. Matt Montagnino scored 31 points. There was a ton of home town support in the stands (including Gloucester Hockey team after their own tough game the night before). Teenagers sported black t-shirts; tomorrow is beach attire. Reading beat Wakefield in a close game, final score 56 to 53. Winner tomorrow moves on to play Belmont in the semifinals.

“Did You Know?: Gloucester is looking to make just the program’s third ever appearance in the sectional quarterfinals. The Fishermen ventured to the quarters in 2000 and 2006. Gloucester is also hosting a first round home game for the first time since 2006 (the team hosted a preliminary round game in 2015)”

What’s at stake: The winner advances to the Division 2 North Quarterfinals later this week against the winner of Tuesday’s first round game between No. 4 Wakefield and No. 13 Reading.

Points per game: Gloucester, 60.8; Danvers, 54.9.

Points against per game: Gloucester, 57.7; Danvers 62.7.

Gloucester’s leading scorers: Marcus Montagnino, 19.2; Ben Oliver, 17.3; Matt Montagnino, 9.3.

Danvers’ leading scorers: Justin DiTomaso 15.5; Armani Vlaun, 12.3.

Gloucester’s key to victory: Play strong defense. The Fishermen can find good looks at the basket against any team, and it can also play a up tempo or down tempo. The key for Gloucester is on the defensive end of the floor. If it defends the perimeter the way it did in its 86-38 win over the Falcons last month, it will be in great shape to move on.

Danvers’ key to victory: Keep up offensively. Gloucester can score from inside and out against good defense. Danvers is going to have to find a way to match Gloucester’s offensive output. The Falcon’s shot selection and ball movement must be on point on Wednesday night, they can not afford a mediocre offensive game.

Over the past few years, museums join in the Super Bowl spirit via trash talk on social media accounts. From humorous challenges and clever collection puns it’s morphed into big stake art bets for Super Bowl contenders: Some wins have triggered a museum loan from the losing city’s rival fine arts institution. Yesterday (see below) the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, announced a twitter showdown with the J Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. Look for #MuseumBowl and @mfaboston and @GettyMuseum. It’s going down at 3pm TODAY, Friday, Feb 1, 2019. I don’t know if there’s a wager but I hope so! It’s great fun no matter what.

Playing sports can possibly trigger a heart attack — and watching them can, too. In 2006, heart attacks in Germany spiked during the national team’s World Cup soccer games. And after the 1980 Super Bowl, fatal heart attacks were up in Los Angeles after the Rams lost. But they were down after the 1984 Super Bowl, when the L.A. Raiders won.

Inspired by ROTC, there will be a telethon cookie dough booster fundraiser for the GHS boys basketball team on December 10, 2018 from 4-6pm. Team players will speed dial for one hour to try to sell as much cookie dough as possible in that time. Fundraising goes back into the program to assist with the banquet and maybe some swag. Please email Rosa rmortillaro@gloucesterschool.com if you’d like to be added to the ‘cookie call list’ December 10th to help support the team. Rosa has helped GHS sports teams for years. Maybe this year the kids will get some team spirit sweatshirts or gear.

Congratulations Flynn Cruiseport Boston

Congratulations to the Flynn Cruiseport Boston on another record-breaking year of cruise passengers in the 2018 season. According to Tom Glynn, Massport CEO, Flynn Cruiseport Boston estimated that they welcomed 396,000 cruise passengers, 150 cruise ships and 20 different cruise lines to Boston. This translates to $485 million in economic output, $213 million to tourism-related businesses, nearly 2,000 jobs and $10 million in annual state and local tax revenues from cruise activity. Also, with the passing of the Economic Development Bill this past July, Massport will be spending $100 million in renovations for Flynn Cruiseport Boston which will include upgrades to efficiently handle 4,000+ passenger vessels.

New MOTT trail Applechusetts features Orchards, Cideries, and More- 
Leading up to the 24th annual Franklin County CiderDays festival, MOTT released Applechusetts, a guide to apple goods, experiences, and traditions across the Commonwealth. Applechusetts features pick-your-own orchards, farm stands, sweet treats, events, and cideries along with apple variety notes, recipes from local businesses, and hard cider tasting tips. An index and resources section at the back directs readers to MOTT and MDAR web pages for listings, maps, and more. Hard copies of Applechusetts were distributed at Franklin County’s CiderDays 2018, and a digital version of the guide is available on MOTT’s website at massvacation.com/apples.

Speaking of Franklin County’s CiderDays, MOTT also partnered with Yankee Magazine to distribute Yankee’s fall guide and a special food edition at the standout harvest festival. Mark your calendars: CiderDays will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2019. That’s 25 years of cider tastings, tours, talks, and so much more. How do you like them apples?

Classic Cars on the Green Oct 13

Gloucester Meetinghouse Invitational, October 13th, car show to benefit Meetinghouse renovation

The opening event in the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation’s 2018-19 Concert & Lecture Series is a vintage car show, to be held on the green at the corner of Church and Middle Street from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday, October 13th.  The event is free to the public but a $5 donation per adult is requested.

A set of over 30 very special classic cars will be on display!

This event will be the first annual classic car show displaying vintage or significant cars owned by North Shore collectors to benefit the ongoing restoration of the historic 1806 Meetinghouse as a civic hub, entertainment venue and community center by the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation.

It’s a competition! Vote for your favorites!

The audience will judge the cars in 9 categories, including Best in Show. The event will conclude with trophies given to the winners in an awards ceremony.

Celebrate the Clean Harbor Swim Festival this weekend Niles Beach SCHEDULE

Fun spectator sport even if you’re not out there! And for this special 40th anniversary it’s a two day affair. Here’s the schedule for the  (already) registered folks for  friends and fans who’ll cheer them on.

SATURDAY AUGUST 11, 2018

8:15 – SAFETY Director will meet with Kayakers/Lifeguards.
8:45 – MANDATORY Meeting for coaches, officials, and swimmers
8:00- 8:45 WARM UP

Events 

1. 8-12 year old  boys/girls 500 meter –  Event starts: 9:00 A.M. 
The race will consist of a 500m course which will be along the beach and back around green buoys   Shallow water start and shoreline finish. 

2 .  Open Men/Women 1.2 mile – Event start: 9:30 or 10 minutes after the final swimmer finishes the 500 m event.  The course will be a rectangle, starting in shallow water. The swimmers will swim approximately 0.55 miles out from the beach to a buoy where they will make a 90 degree turn to the left, keeping the buoy on your left. The second leg will be approximately 0.1 miles, and the swimmers will make another 90 degree turn keeping the bouy on their left. The swimmers will then proceed to swim back to Niles beach and finish at the orange buoy at the shore/finish line.

NEW THIS YEAR – SUNDAY EVENT

The 10 Mile Celebrate the Clean Harbor Relay.
6:30 a.m. Registration/Check in opens
7:15 a.m. Safety Meeting. 
7:30 Start of First leg.
No one will be allowed to start a new leg after 1:20.p.m. 2:00 p.m  Course will be cleared.

NEOWSA (formerly NEMSA) Printed matter about the Celebrate the Clean Harbor Swim:

The CELEBRATE THE CLEAN HARBOR OPEN WATER SWIMMING FESTIVAL will be held  August 11 and 12, 2018. This year, in celebration of 40 years of aqua activism for Goucester Harbor water quality, we are expanding to a two day open water event  sponsored by New England Open Water Swimming Association (NEOWSA), formerly New England Marathon swimming Association (NEMSA).

Starting off  the festival will be the  Clean Harbor Kids Swim on Saturday, a 500 meter swim along the shore of Niles Beach for 8-12 year olds. Held since 2015, this is a wonderful way to introduce kids to the sport of Open Water Swimming.

Also on Saturday will be the 40th Annual 1.2 Mile Celebrate the Clean Harbor Swim

For 2018, we are adding a second day to the event, creating the festival. We will be holding the  10 mile Clean Harbor Relay event on Sunday, August 12th. This event will be held on a 1.0 mile course, very similar to Saturday’s event.  We suggest teams of 5, and swimming through the rotation two times..  Your team may have more or less than 5 swimmers. We believe the more the merrier. There will be a 6.5 hour limit. This will be a fun atmosphere, so bring a beach chair/blanket, snacks, some sunscreen and shade, and have a great time hanging out on the beach between your swims with your closest swimming friends.  

Proceeds from the event will go toward supporting two organizations in the local area: Maritime Gloucester and Gloucester Fisheman’s Wives Association.

The mission of Maritime Gloucester is to inspire students and visitors to value marine science, maritime heritage and environmental stewardship through hands-on education and experiences.

The Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association is a non-profit organization promoting the New England fishing industry, helping to preserve the Atlantic Ocean as a food supply for the world, and assisting active and retired fishermen and their families to live better lives.

We have reason to celebrate this incredible resource that is Gloucester Harbor, and we owe it all to  four Cape Ann residents who, in 1979,  swam across Gloucester Harbor in protest of its polluted status. This evolved into an annual Audubon Society-sponsored event to help raise funds for cleaning the harbor, hence the name “Swim for a Clean Harbor.” When, in 1993, the harbor was deemed clean by the Audubon Society, the efforts of these pioneering swim-eco-activists became a cause for celebration and “Celebrate the Clean Harbor Swim” was born. Don’t miss this year’s event. We have reason to celebrate and what better way than to Jump in. Get Wet.”

Woman-Owned Businesses along the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway to welcome Austin-Healey auto tour

It has been just over 6 months since the first airing of the “ Woman Owned Businesses on the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway” on Chronicle WCVB Ch.5.

Pauline Bresnahan writes, “We have seen a tremendous amount of visitors to our trail since because of that show. We have also mailed about one hundred copies of our trail map when we get a request either on our Facebook page or when they call a shop.

“We can’t begin to thank the Chronicle crew from the show. We have seen visitors from Needham, Pembroke, Roslindale, Methuen, Holliston, Quincy, Tewksbury, Chelmsford, Gardner, Andover, Gloucester, Rockport, Cambridge, Boston, Arlington, just to name a few. “Recently we were contacted by an Austin-Healey Auto owners group. They will be holding a weekend summit in Beverly and have asked to do part of our trail on an early morning in August. They have a three hour window and have asked for information. We are very excited to host this group of about 60 owners and their spouses. Some of us will offer refreshments and small gift pack on information about our own towns. “We have connected four communities along a beautiful road by working together. It has been awesome!”-

Salty Frank’s Dogs will be on site Tuesday through Sunday fair weather days, and weekends after Labor Day. The menu changes up daily and goes beyond dogs (lobster rolls, mozzarella sticks, chicken…) One photo shows  looking back to his childhood: his family stayed in the first house on the front cottages row. There used to be a store on the ground floor.

Gloucester Fishermen Youth Soccer team, the Tridents,  won the championship in the Essex County Youth Soccer Association’s Championship Tournament in MTOC 1. They are the top boys’ division for grades 5 and 6. “Next up for the Tridents: representing Essex County in the statewide Tournament of Champions this Saturday.”

Julie Smith, Director of Athletics, shares great news about the Gloucester High School Cheerleading team:

“Please take a moment to watch the amazing Gloucester High School Cheerleading team and their winning routine, out of a field of 18 teams, at the NEW ENGLAND championships yesterday at Southern New Hampshire State University. According to Coach Erica Mitchell, yesterday’s competition was the “Super Bowl of the New England competitive cheer world.”  The team captured back-to-back State Titles in the Fall and Winter seasons.  The New England Championships are a culmination of the two seasons and only occur at the conclusion of the Winter season.  This is the program’s first New England Championship since 2007.  The team departs for Florida where they will compete in the National Championship this weekend.”
