Plum Cove Elementary School: Spring 2022 musical performed by 4th and 5th grade students under the direction of Heidi Dallin. The photo caption notes Miss Hannigan played by Evelyn Taplett and Annie played by Bianca Numerosi.

Can you remember an elementary school performance or arts educator*? Chances are if you attended elementary school in Gloucester, you can. Gloucester has a long, strong and colorful history of professional theater artists enriching community theater for young and old, and prioritizing arts education in area schools. It’s no surprise that East Gloucester Elementary School (EGS)– only blocks away from Rocky Neck and former sites of Atwoods’ Playhouse-on-the-Moors, Little Theater, and Bass Rocks Theater–included a theater and stadium seating for little ones right in the school. Productions have been mounted in all the schools, and evidence shows year round activity in some decades. Poets and playwrights, choreographers, industry professionals (stage direction, lighting, costume design, etc), and insiders engage and collaborate. Nan Webber inspired generations at the GHS drama department and on Cape Ann. Heidi Dallin has devoted 30+ years to youth theater development.

Congratulations to all involved with this Annie Kids production! Enjoy this magic time.

*note: I don’t, but I did not grow up here. A couple of early memories that come to mind are the children’s museum recycle arts and crafts shop (fill a shopping bag), and seeing the Fantasticks at Priscilla Beach Theater, Plymouth, MA, summer vacation ca.1972-74.

The entire O’Maley 8th grade will be seeing classmate Nate Oaks in To Kill A Mockingbird @GloucesterStage!

So cool! Thank you Gloucester Stage, Gloucester Public Schools and GEF

Congratulations, Nate, and Gabriel Magee, another Heidi Dallin Youth Acting Workshop (YAW) actor. Buy your tickets soon-  Gloucester Stage productions sell out and are not to be missed. Read more about Nate and the entire cast

Wonderful Gloucester Cultural Council has money for 2017 arts, humanities and sciences projects. Apply now!

The GCC Application deadline is October 17, 2016. No paper copies are required this year!

The GCC grants have primed countless programs that would not have been possible without that support. The unheralded community volunteers that put in the time and effort to administer the process are fantastic. I look forward to seeing the annual choices. Good luck everyone!

Rose Sheehan writes to GMG:

On behalf of the Gloucester Cultural Council please help us get the word out about project funding opportunities. Thanks!

The Gloucester Cultural Council is currently accepting applications for grant funding for community-based projects in the arts, humanities and sciences for the FY 2017 round of funding. Each year, organizations, schools and individuals are invited to apply to the Local Cultural Council for funding to support projects that promote rich cultural experiences in the Gloucester community. This year, all applicants must submit their proposals via the new online system and no hard copy applications will be accepted.

The Gloucester Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community. The Gloucester Cultural Council guidelines, project priorities and online applications are available at http://www.mass-culture.org/Gloucester.

David Coffin Enrichment at EGS

East Gloucester resident David Coffin presented his "Music from the King’s Court — Exploring the Early Winds" enrichment program to the East Gloucester Elementary School 3rd-graders, who are learning to play the recorder this year.

David brought an impressive collection of wind instruments, and played almost all of them for the spellbound kids.  He demonstrated that the ocarina, bombard, recorder, slide whistle, gemshorn, organ pipe were essentially the same instrument.  He even played a water bottle and a drinking straw!

David Coffin is remarkably talented, and is wonderful with kids.  I strongly recommend him for any school looking for a music-based enrichment program!

David’s web site has a page that demonstrates these wind instruments:  http://www.davidcoffin.com/index.php?page=kings-court-meet-the-instruments
