I was going to post a video that I had taken during this time but Mark’s salty language made the video footage unusable.

Seal Suns Itself At Captain Joe and Sons Video

This seal had no fear at all.  Felt very comfortable even as I approached it to take the video

Thanks for watching.

Tuffy 5:09AM- Tuffy 4:10PM September 23,2010

Here’s a before and after picture of Tuffy after a day of lobstering.  We just finished lowering bait down onto his boat The Degelyse and took this picture.  Note the how clean his white shirt is in the before picture.

AFTER 4:10PM

The reason his shirt is all dirty particularly in that spot under his arm is because that is where his oilskins don’t cover his shirt and the line from the pot trawls come up over the rails and with it sling mud and stuff all over the place as it comes through the hauling block.

Seal Sunning Itself At The Dock

Yesterday Ed Collard spotted a seal sunning itself on a camel at our dock.  The very camel that the Mellissa K ties up to.  It was incredibly relaxed even as Ed and I approached it to take pictures and videos.

Look for the video tonight at 6PM

153 Miles and and 18 Hour Steam Dave Jewell and Crew Land Two Fat Bluefin Tuna

Heading out a couple of days ago Dave and his crew head out for an 18 hour steam of  153 miles to catch themselves a nice pay day. One 800 lber and one 650 these tuna will command a nice price in Japan.

When Dave headed out he was a bit nervous because where they have to go to catch these fish it’s a long way out and there’s no place to run and hide if a storm whips up.  It is where there are warm ocean currents and cold water intersecting and it can produce nasty storms seemingly out of the blue and without much warning.

Video coming tomorrow

Tough! Richie Cassola Keeps Right On Hauling Lobster Gear With A Fish Hook Stuck In His Finger

It’s one thing to get a fish hook embedded into your finger and stop working to take the thing out but retired Beverly Policeman Richie Cassola strapped on a Band-Aid and kept on working ‘til the last pot was hauled.

That’s Toughness Folks!  He says he kept hauling because he knew we needed the lobsters.  I say it’s because he just loves being out on the water.

Abbie Lundberg Photo Of Tony Gross’ Seahorse Find

You may remember Tony Gross from his pictures in the Boatyard-

or when he chopped off the tip of his finger and became a “cull”

Well the other day Tony was hauling lobster traps and off his gear fell a seahorse which are pretty rare to catch up in our waters. His lovely wife Abbie sent us the picture-

Hi Joey, here’s a photo of the seahorse that came up with Tony’s trawl

Johnny “Doc” Herrick Catches A Triggerfish

We don’t see these too often.  About once or twice a year.  Dave Jewell caught one a year or two ago and we got some video for you below.

This picture was taken by FOB Joey Ciolino when Joey and Frank Ciolino paid a visit to the dock yesterday afternoon.

Here is the post from August 9,2009 with the Triggerfish that Aaron on the Lady Margaret caught.  Obviously it’s the warmer waters that bring these unusual fish up off our coast.

You Can’t Mix Residential And Marine Industry- PHOOEYYYY!

Our Grandfather bought this property back in 1953 from the Gorton’s company and my cousin Frank and I bought it from our fathers six years ago.  During that entire time we’ve been surrounded by houses that are directly in front of our dock and on both sides of our dock there are recreational boat marinas. You would think by listening to the anti-development, put up roadblocks to any progress crowd that a holy war would ensue if you ever mixed the two components but in reality it has been going on way before there was the ridiculous zoning that is in place now.  We’ve been peacefully coexisting with our awesome neighbors for decades.  Yes through starting up our diesel trucks early in the morning to go pick up bait or make deliveries, yes through the odors and smells that are inherent in the fishing industry, yes through years and years of sights, sounds and smells of heavy industry.  People move here I believe because they love it and embrace it.

So the folks that tell you it could never co-exist to have tourism and commercial fishing side by side, call bullshit on them.

Our dock isn’t the only place where commercial boats and recreational boats and housing and industry are side by side- look at the Rocky Neck Railways and dockage situation down there- commercial boats and the highest density of tourism in our city basically on top of each other.

Beacon Marine Decades long of housing and marina space with cranes and a boat yard coexisting with an new Media Ad agency –Bait and Tackle all on the same property.

Boston Massacre Come Down To Our Dock To Shoot Their 2011 Calendar Pics

If you haven’t been to watch a Roller Derby Bout featuring our own Boston Derby Dames then you have missed out on watching the number one dollar for dollar entertainment value in the State of Massachusetts.  Roller derby is fast paced, action packed, semi violent, the skaters are friendly and you don’t need to be a rocket science to enjoy the sport.  For more info about the Boston Derby Dames click here

We’ve covered The Boston Derby Dames for the past two years first finding out about it through Krush Puppy, a local who kills it on the flat track!  Once I went to my first bout I was hooked.  So when Krush asked if they could shoot the 2011 calendar down at the dock I told her I think it would be a perfect fit.  The team’s image is tough and blue collar and the mascot is Pinchy McMasshole a giant foam lobster- what place would be better than right here at Captain Joe and Sons!
