Recently we had a delightful dinner at Oliver’s Harbor Restaurant. The food was outstanding and equally so, was the service provided by these three sweet ladies!

IF YOU LIKE APEROL SPRITZ THEN YOU WILL LOVE CAPPELLETTI SPRITZ
Last night at Short and Main we had the best dinner of oven roasted Cape Cod Sea Scallops, warm farm fresh winter veggies, and the always superb Louis Prima pizza. Bethany, our friendly and knowledgeable bartender, asked if I would like to try Cappelletti instead of Aperol. I did try and absolutely LOVED it!!!
I found Cappelletti to be dryer and more richly flavorful than Aperol. Aperitivo Capelletti and Aperol are both red bitter liqueurs (aperitivos). Some red bitter liqueurs are spirit based and some are wine based. Cappelletti is categorized as gentian root infused aromatized wine. It’s difficult to find a list of ingredients because the recipes are closely guarded family secrets. Essentailly Cappelletti is made of wine, bitter gentian root, carmine (cochineal), alpine herbs, and spices. Carmine is obtained from grinding beetle shells into a fine powder and is what gives Cappelletti its distinct ruby red color. Carmine has been used for centuries to color food, clothing, cosmetics, and paint pigment.
Cappelletti may be the oldest classic red bitter liqueur in production. “The producer, which goes by the full name Antica Erboristeria Cappelletti, was first established in 1909. For most of their first century they were located in the historic Piazza Fiera in the center of Trento. Today they are located 20 km south of Trento in Aldeno, surrounded by vineyards and apple orchards. As the name would suggest, the firm was and is still today focused on products from traditional herbs, roots and flowers. They achieved fame in the region for their productions of amari and aperitivi, including the classic red bitter Aperitivo Cappelletti. All production is done in house by the fourth generation of the family, Luigi and Maddalena.”
Next time you are at Short and Main, say hi to Bethany and try a Cappelletti Spritz. You won’t be disappointed ❤
Short and Main is located at the corner of Short Street and Main Street at 36 Main Street, Gloucester. During the winter months, they are open from Wednesday through Sunday.
CONGRATULATIONS TO DANIELLE GLANTZ AND HER BEAUTIFUL PASTA AND WINE SHOP ‘PASTAIO VIA CORTA’
Congratulations to Danielle for the continued success of her fabulous homemade pasta and wine shop. Danielle has a gorgeous new website, with great information on her local sources and the natural, organic wines she carries, with photos by Nubar Alexanian.
Visit Danielle’s website here.
Message from Danielle ~
Three and a half years ago, I decided to take the biggest risk of my life and open up my shop in a tiny 800 sq. ft. space that was originally a shared space. My cool retro display case broke the first day, half the shapes were extruded and half the shapes were made completely by hand, and I even tried a little tricolore up at the top.
I’ve since refined, worked on my Italian language skills, educated myself more on regional Italian cuisine and family recipes, visited with numerous farmers and artisans here and in Italy, as well as meet and feed some of the most wonderful people in my community.
It’s super exhausting, challenging and tiring. But I love this more than you could ever imagine. Having the opportunity to educate and put real food on your tables has been my life goal. What I’m saying is, holy shit, the store has changed since the beginning, now I’m on Main Street, selling real Italian provisions from @gustiamo and natural wines from @selectionaturel . My importers and I have the same values and views. We work so hard as outcasts to deliver you the real message and passion of the people behind your food and wine.
Updated my website, check it out. I now am not just a pasta shop, but a provisions + natural wine shop too. Wow, to believe I built this with my two hands is not worthy of thanking all the people that helped me along the way….especially my customers – we have created a serious movement, thank you for coming into the shop. The power of the consumer is REAL!
Located at 123 Main Street, Suite 1, in historic downtown Gloucester.
Hours:
Open Wednesday-Sunday 11 AM to 7-ish PM
Closed Monday & Tuesday
The moral of the story is Danielle pretty much lives at the shop. Give us a ring if you’re heading out and you’d like to place your order in advance and/or you think you might miss us.

DUCKWORTH’S BAKE SALE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW!!!
JOE VIRGILIO MAKING SAINT JOSEPH ROLLS
The Virgilios began making St. Joseph rolls in the early 1950s, for the Feast of Saint Joseph, and today, they make them year round. Back then, there were so many families that celebrated Saint Joseph traditions that even as young kids, Joe and all his cousins had to hurry to the bakery after school to help their grandfather fill the St. Joseph roll orders. Now the bread is made with state of the art equipment but in his grandfather’s day it was all made by hand. Joe smiled thinking about how his grandfather would love today’s mixing and baking machines. I went home with a camera-full of stories and bag full of Joe’s bread, both generous, and much-appreciated gifts.
Virgilio’s Saint Joseph rolls are super yummy plain, with a touch of butter, or olive oil, and are even more super delicious made into one of their world-famous sandwiches!
ALLIE’S BEACH STREET CAFE – FABULOUS IN EVERY WAY!
My husband Tom and I had the most unexpectedly wonderful and fantastic dining experience last Saturday night. We have our very favorite Cape Ann restaurants (that we adore), but were wanting to try something new. The menu posted online at Allie’s Beach Street Cafe, located in Manchester, looked very French and very inviting, so we gave it a try. It’s not everyday you discover a restaurant that hits all the right notes and we were beyond delighted. So much so, we are returning tomorrow!
Readers may recognize Allie. She has owned and operated Pleasant Street Tea company for over a decade. Husband Glenn has been a sommelier and server at the Four Seasons for more than nineteen years. Both are wonderfully welcoming towards guests, and the waitstaff are just as friendly.
Manchester’s former Beach Street Cafe has been transformed, with chic, Provencal-inspired decor. Sunlight pours through big picture windows warming the white-washed walls and wide-planked wooden floors. The dining room feels relaxed, fun, and elegant, all at the same time. Primarily a classic French bistro, the menu also features dishes from around the world where French cooking has been highly influential, including Louisiana Creole, French Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and North Africa.
The most amazing thing is, Allie’s is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as Saturday and Sunday brunch, all day! And, too, you can stop in casually for specialty drinks, coffee, pastries, or order from their online menu.
We happened in on a ‘Three Course Tasting,’ night, which takes place every Friday and Saturday evening. You can either order from the menu or partake in the tasting. Tom had the Weiner Schnitzel from the menu and Loved it. I tried the ‘Tasting’ offering and it was simply fabulous.
The first course was a sublime mixture of duxelles and goat cheese served in a puff pastry shell. In between courses, Glenn brought out a zippy sizzling hot pan of Shishito peppers. What a treat! Next course served was the fresh and warm baby spinach salad, dressed with a super tasty bacon balsamic vinaigrette. The final course was a perfectly cooked and tender medium rare steak, served with yummy truffle fries and a lovely arugula salad. We were waaaaay toooo filled to try dessert, but I did catch a photo of a gorgeous blackberry ombre layer cake, topped with blueberry compote, and it looked WOW!
I wasn’t expecting to take any photos and plan to return during the day with my real camera, but here are some cell phone snaps to give you an idea.
