On April 21 2013 starting at 9 am, Ambie Orlando will be having the first annual clean up Burnhams Field event. What we will be doing is cleaning up the field of trash and debris so that everyone can see the true beauty in the field. If your child or anyone for that matter uses the field we would love for you to come down and help out. We are recommending you bring down maybe a rake and shovel and if you could some power equipment like blowers and weed whackers that would be an even bigger help. Thank you in advance for your help it is greatly appreciated.

Sidewalk Sweeping is on April 20th, the Clean City Initiative and the Building Center of Gloucester asks every resident and business to sweep the sand from their sidewalks for the city to come and take it away.
What is the Eco-Trip?
It’s a scavenger hunt from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 around downtown Gloucester. You’ll walk to eight businesses and solve a puzzle that will reveal one way they are taking care of the environment.
What businesses are sponsoring the Eco-Trip?

Why should I participate?
You’ll have fun while exercising your brain and body! You’ll learn what Gloucester businesses are doing to lessen their carbon footprints. You’ll have a chance to win a gift from a local business and enjoy light refreshments at the after party at Latitude 43.
How will I know where to go?
You’ll sign in at the Friend Room of the Sawyer Free Library and get a map showing the businesses’ locations. You’ll plan your own route from there. We’ll meet for the after party at Latitude 43 between 2:30 and 3 p.m.
Do I have to travel alone?
You can choose to play solo or in a team of 2 to 4 people. If you register by yourself and want to play as part of a team, we will assign you to a team when you sign in on April 20.
Will kids enjoy the Eco-Trip?
The Eco-Trip (1 ½ mile walk) and puzzles have been designed for adults and for middle and high school students. It’s up to you to gauge your child’s interest and stamina. Children age 13+ should pay the $10 registration fee.
How does my team win?
The Eco-Trip is not a race. The goal is to solve the puzzles. Teams that solve all eight puzzles will be entered in a drawing during the party at Latitude 43 for first pick of the prizes. Teams that solve three or more puzzles will be entered into a drawing to select from among the remaining prizes.
I want to play! How do I register? How much does it cost? Click on the Eco-Trip link at the Eco-Trip Registration page, fill out the short form and pay by credit card via PayPal. Each Eco-Trip player will pay a $10 fee before April 13. After that, players will pay $15. The Eco-Trip is a fundraiser for the Cape Ann TimeBank.
What is the Cape Ann TimeBank?
The Cape Ann TimeBank is a group of individuals and businesses that strengthen the community by offering their services to each other and to community groups. For every hour of service a member offers, s/he is eligible to ask for an hour of help in return.
Where can I park?
Gloucester has 10-hour parking meters (.50/hour) and a parking lot on Rogers Street below the Fitz Henry Lane house and across from the police station.
Is there a rain date?
No, we’re going to hold the Eco-Trip rain or shine. After all, rain is an integral part of our ecology!

36 performers on Cape Ann this weekend — remember, by my definition, the weekend starts on Thursdays.  Tonight we’ve got the Singer/Songwriter Shuffle starting at 7, featuring some of the area’s best, including Inge Berge, whose new children’s album (see this post for more info) was featured in today’s Gloucester Times (see article here).
After the shuffle, you can catch award winning Indie Rocker, Bray Byrd at Dog Bar starting at 9.  Music starts at 7pm tomorrow, 10:30 AM on Saturday and 11:30 AM on Sunday, so plenty of opportunities to get the kids out to listen.  See the full schedule here.

This is David Wesson, I’m the new Outreach Coordinator for Henry Allen’s Northshore Folklore Theater Company. I’ve been a follower of GMG for some time, and look forward to connecting with you!
As you are likely aware, Henry has partnered with the YMCA as Heny Allen’s Northshore Theatre Company. Instead of our plays being confined to one theater, we are performing them in various hot spots all around town- as a way to truly reach out to the commnunity.

Or perhaps Jesse Pomeroy, a boy of sixteen,
With suspicious demeanor and caught at the scene!

Kids missing school isn’t a good thing. It’s not good for the students. Not good for the teachers who have their performance tied to standardized testing. Not good for education in general. I’m fairly certain we can all agree on that.
With all public schools taking the same exact school vacation week off what it has created in the travel industry is a huge demand all at once and if anyone wants to travel during school vacation week prices not only double, but they often times triple or quadruple.
So parents who would like to take their kids away often times take their kids out a week before or a week after a winter vacation and once those kids are in third grade or so they can lose a fundamental building block of their education. Teachers whose job performance are increasingly tied to state standardized test scores are penalized for children’s absence if they aren’t there to learn and those students bring their average test scores down.
So I ask, why not just move school vacation week forward or back a week so we don’t have to compete with the entire state for flights to Orlando or some other vacation destination at the very same time?
You would have better attendance because parents wouldn’t pick an off school vacation week to go away.
The people who wouldn’t take their kids out of school on an off school vacation week might be able to afford to take their children away if every public school district in the State didn’t take the same exact week off.
Teachers would benefit from higher attendance rates and presumably higher standardized test scores because the kids would be in class.
I see it as a win all the way around.
While going up the Rio Colorado we encountered a three toed sloth attempting to swim across. We stopped and picked her up and brought her to the other side.

Come to The Hive in Gloucester for a one-day rummage sale full of all kinds of art supplies. Over the years Cape Ann Art Haven has acquired many great art and craft supplies. We’ve used a lot in our classes, but there are some materials that we just don’t have room for anymore. We’re cleaning out our closet and raising money for Art Haven so we can keep offering a creative space and inexpensive art classes to the community. We have paints, fabric pieces, books, matte board, paper, frames and more! The sale will take place Saturday, April 20th from 9AM to 3PM at Art Haven’s new community center, The Hive, 11 Pleasant St., Gloucester. Our summer class schedule is ready! Check it out here. We have weekly sessions of a fun, global program where we will be exploring art and culture of a different country each week. We also have two weeks of collaboration with Maritime Gloucester and one week with Cape Ann Museum.

Before the summer, we will have one more session of regular classes at Art Haven and The Hive. At Art Haven, we will have clay, pottery, drawing/printmaking and painting for kids. The class schedule will be the same as the current session on our website.
At The Hive, we’ll have pottery classesTuesday 3-5pm and Thursday 6-9pm. We’re also excited to be adding a pastel classThursdays 3-5pm and charcoal portrait drawing Thursdays 6-9pm. Photoshop will still be Tuesday nights, from 6-8pm and Open Studio on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30pm. The Hive will be launching a new website soon where students can register online; "like" The Hive Community Center on Facebook to stay up to date!

raffle for all residents / businesses of the Cape Ann Area. Tickets
are $10 each and the winner will win a minimum of 10 hrs of labor
resources to aid them with their Spring Clean up. Some of the funds
will help to offset the costs of our upcoming convention for our

Gloucester Post 3 Sr. Legion Baseball Tryout
The 2014 Gloucester Post 3 Sr. Legion team will hold a tryout on Sunday, May 5th from 11 am – 1 pm at Nate Ross Field at O’Maley School in Gloucester. Legion baseball is available for players between the ages of 14-19. This year Gloucester will only field a Sr. Legion team and not a Jr. Program. Registration will take place for the tryout starting at 10:30 am on the day of the tryout at Nate Ross Field. All questions should be sent to Gerald MacKillop at Post3baseball@gmail.com. Post 3 is available for residents of Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex.
