Tomorrow (SUN) morning at 9:00 A.M., on Aurelia Nelson’s 104.0 FM radio show Curtain Up, Peter gives us a rundown of Gloucester’s early Summer event highlights — yes, we know Summer doesn’t begin astronomically until the solstice (June 21 at 6:51 A.M.) but it’s sunny today, so we’re gonna push the season and call it Summer.
The cool thing about listening to a radio show like Curtain Up is that you don’t have to be sitting down at the computer to find out what’s going on. You could be cleaning the house, weeding the garden, driving, cooking breakfast … or just sitting on the front porch with a cup of coffee … relaxing.

“Think Tank” Interactive Fisheries Exhibit at Maritime Gloucester
Our new interactive fisheries exhibit, “Think Tank”, opens on June 8th, World Oceans Day! Maritime Gloucester has purchased a large, interactive, multi-touch table that is equipped with an integrated PC and supports animation, video, audio, photographic data and educational games. Community members, visitors and students will be able to play an interactive, animated game on the table in which they will seek to influence the size of a fishery population based on a variety of factors. The exhibit is designed to welcome all to the table to have a conversation about the challenges one faces when managing fisheries. Click here for full info.

Adventure and Maritime Gloucester re-unite
Hi Joey,
Wednesday was a busy day for the Adventure. Her crew finished repairing the stem and getting her ready to move. She was re-launched at the evening high tide, and left GMR for her new at Gloucester Maritime on the Harbor Loop. We had some friends and family come by to see us off. Graham Makay once again captained the Adventure for her short ride across the harbor. We were welcomed by our newly expanded family from Gloucester Maritime, with board members, family and friends from both organizations joining in a champagne toast. A row crew also came out to give us an all oar salute. Despite a bit of rain, the mood at the wharf was quite festive. The Adventure’s Sarah Tuvim recognized that between the 2 organizations, we made a wonderful rainbow of raincoats to brighten our evening.

Orange Poppies in the Rain
Wednesday while planting at Willowdale in the on-again off-again rain, the luminesce orange of the crinkly tissue paper-like poppy petals kept catching my eye. They seemed especially incandescent juxtaposed against the drizzly gray light. I don’t really mind planting in the rain for a few hours and actually much prefer it to the heat of planting at mid-day on warm sunny days. The only thing with planting in the rain is that on long, non-stop nine- to ten-hour planting days, I get very chilled, which leads to a tired muddy mess that arrives home to my husband, who has actually been looking forward to my coming home. “Please don’t talk to me,” I say when first arriving but, after a solid half hour soak in a steamy tub, I cheer up and am ready to converse and get dinner underway.
Look at all these buds yet to come!
We planted this urn back on May 1st, and it has filled out handsomely. The sweet peas are climbing up the pussy willow basket handles and their fragrance, along with the scent of the dianthus, Viola ‘Etain’ and sweet alyssum is really very enchanting. From one initial bud to dozens still yet to come, going on six weeks now this little poppy plant just keeps on bestowing her gift of great beauty!

Historic Adventure
Today I went down to Maritime Gloucester to take a look at Schooner Adventure at her new summer home. While there, I ran into Jim Burkholder and Christine Minnix of New Hampshire. Jim and Christine have a particular interest in Adventure. Jim’s grandfather was Col Edwin H. Cooper, who, in the 1930s, photographed Adventure and other maritime subjects.Jim and Christine have recovered the collection and have reproduced many of the images as prints and note cards.They can be reached at minnixchristine@yahoo.com or 603 997 9521.
