#StayWeird

I’m not a huge award show junkie.  In truth, I rarely watch the Academy Awards (or the Oscars…even that confuses me), the Grammy Awards, the Golden Globes, the People’s Choice, the Emmys, or any of the others.

While I’m not proud (nor ashamed) to say that I have not seen a single one of the movies that were nominated for an Academy Award this year, I did, however, watch part of the award show on Sunday evening.

And, while doing so, I was pleasantly surprised by two things.

First of all, when Graham Moore won Best Adapted Screenplay for “The Imitation Game” he made an inspiring and brave acceptance speech.  #stayweird

Secondly, oh the tears, listening to Tim McGraw sing “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” just about did me in.  What a beautiful song.

Hello, Joey.

Wanted to let you know that Gorton’s Seafood will be launching its first-ever national tour for a new product this week.

The Gorton’s Smart & Crunchy Tour -with a branded food truck, interactive pop-up dipping bar, and mascot/host “Smarty Crunchman” – will go coast-to-coast to introduce America to Smart & Crunchy Fish Sticks which have half the fat and 30 fewer calories than the classic Gorton’s sticks.

Read more and see photos about the tour in this release.

A send-off event will happen at Gorton’s headquarters at 12:30 Tuesday, 2/24, and the first tour stop will be Friday and Saturday at Northshore Mall from 11-6. Would love it if you could make a post about the national tour sometime this week.

Mascot "Smarty Crunchman" is the host of Gorton's Smart & Crunchy Tour.

DRONE SURFING: Some locals headed out on Feb 22nd to catch a few sets #gloucesterma #DJIPHANTOM2

Good Harbor Beach Surfers

I headed out to capture some footage during the epic 40 degree heat wave on Sunday. I came across some guys who where also a little restless to get back to the great outdoors. I never met them, so I don’t have their names. I shot some pretty cool video, but I thought I would share some snap shots first. Now you have to have a very solid set of stones to paddle out in these waters this time of year. New England has some pretty decent waves in the off season, so it’s not really ever “off-season” for the surfers. If you know these kats, tell them to hit me up!

Anyone know?

Gloucester Harbor Panoramas

The light was unfolding in such a glorious way late yesterday afternoon that on my way home from the Trident Art Restart event I stopped to take a few pictures of the Harbor Walk. The view of the harbor in the golden light made for a beautiful panorama and rotating around more fully, there was the sun going down over the Fort! Click images to view larger.

On a wellness check to my boat at the Beacon I came upon Jeff Weaver. He had been on the job in the same place for two frigid days. Pure plein air painting.

 USCG Pendant Update

Tuesday the Coast Guard Cutter ‪#‎Pendant‬ started flooding due to a breached hull from all her thick ice-breaking. The crew quickly did damage control, and stopped the leak.

The Massachusetts State Police provided divers to get her back out to sea with less than 24 hours lost. BZ Pendant Crew and Mass State Troopers!

The Pendant was commissioned in August 1963. ‪#‎opRENEW‬ ‪

Is Taylor Swift gonna sue me for this post?

I have to admit I kinda like Taylor Swift.  She’s cute and she can write a hit song.  But yesterday, what little admiration I had for her vanished when I heard this piece on the radio informing us that Taylor Swift now owns the phrase “Speak Now.”  That’s right, according to NPR, Taylor Swift “… was granted a trademark for the phrase ‘speak now.'”  But that’s not all.  She’s applied for dozens of trademarks, including one for the phrase “Love, Love, Love” (see a list of her trademark applications here)  Wow!  Something is awry here.

Let’s start with the fact that “Love, Love, Love” is beginning of a Beatles song by Lennon-McCartney that is far better than anything Taylor Swift has ever written or is likely to write during her lifetime.

Don’t get me wrong, artists deserve copyright protection for their works and I heartily approve of giving songwriters copyrights to their songs.  But Taylor Swift has a trademark on the phrase “Speak Now” giving her exclusive rights to use it on “Textiles and textile goods, not included in other classes; bed and table covers.” See the detail here.  So if you print out this post and stick it on your pillow, you might actually be breaking the law.

Perhaps if there are any copyright lawyers reading this, you could answer me this: Without infringing on Little Ms. Swift, could I sell a tablecloth for wedding receptions that said, “Speak Now of Forever Hold Your Piece”?

How does this happen?  And what’s next?  Is Paul McCartney going to challenge her application for “Love, Love Love”?  Is he going to apply for a trademark for the phrase “She Loves You” or better yet, “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah”?

Here are some videos to watch as you ponder these lofty questions:

Here’s George Harrison’s hit “My Sweet Lord”, the subject of one of the most famous and contentious copyright infringement suits ever (Harrison lost — see here)

Here’s Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” another song, which was the subject of copyright infringement, but he and Tom Petty (writer of “I Won’t Back Down”, the chorus of which really is very similar) worked things out amicably (see details here.)

Preparations For The Fest Of St. Joseph Is Well Underway!

The planning baking, cleaning, and rearrangement of the house has begun! Over the weekend while cleaning, I decided to make a batch of “Rose Pedal Infused Sugar & Rose Pedal Jelly” using rose pedals left over from Valentines Day. My clever way to recycle the fragrant roses into a delightful sweet treat of Heart Shaped Linzer Cookies for my Novena Guest, that will tie in my families “Red Rose” Altar Theme onto the dinner room table where homemade pastries and confections are shared during our traditional nightly “Novena Coffee Time” held after each Rosary!

Coconut Is Free At Last!

A few days ago we were greeted at the door by a very proud Coconut sporting her “dangling” plastic cone.  God only know how she managed to wiggle it loose while we were out! After a few failed attempts, with the sad puppy eye stair down, the cone was successfully refastened around Coconuts neck for the remainder of her recommended recovery days post eye surgery, preformed by Dr. Ray Cahill at SeaPort Veterinary Hospital. Happy to report that our Coconut was finally freed from wearing the dreaded “hard plastic Cone” yesterday and tomorrow she will be off to K-9Kuts for a much need bath and day of beauty with Julie Borge!

Boats, Boats, and More Boats

If you didn’t get to the New England Boat Show this year, stay tuned for next year’s dates.  I really can’t recommend it enough…whether you’re in the market for a boat…or just love boats.

With a huge number of boat manufacturers and industry vendors….as well as, engaging and interactive activities for the kiddos, a day at the boat show is a fantastic (and inexpensive) way to spend a day.  We paid $26….kids under 15 are free.  Parking was $15….which I suppose could be avoided if you don’t mind walking a bit and if there isn’t 9 feet of snow on the ground next year (fingers crossed).  The most expensive part of the day was the quick bite to eat that the boys needed to rally through the second 3 hours.

Sadly, my iPhone battery died after 4 hours of photo taking so many boats are not represented in this slide show.  I was also shooting more like a mom and less like a blog contributor, so if you can’t tell what type of boat it is, I apologize.

Cosmos ©Kim Smith 2014Cosmos bipinatus

In preparation for the upcoming season of programs that I give, which are centered around designing gardens to support pollinators, one of my jobs is to refresh and update the photos that are an integral part of the presentation. This past month I have been immersed in colorful images and tomorrow I am giving my new monarch butterfly presentation at (the other) Cape. Here are some of the outtakes from my pollinator habitat programs for our winter weary eyes.
