New England Boat Show
As is becoming a February school vacation tradition, we spent several hours checking out the boats at the New England Boat Show this week. The boys can’t get enough of seeing the bells and whistles, so to speak, and love the large variety of boats on hand. At the end of the day, they’d both be incredibly happy with the smallest of boats providing they could toss a fishing rod onboard, but they love seeing the opulence of some of much larger boats too. They had a little “this is the life” moment sitting in some theater chairs in the cabin of one boat that had a rotating TV screen that would swing out for optimal movie watching.
They were incredibly fortunate to score two KYPADS (an awesome combination of paddle board and kayak) for Christmas…and are more than thrilled to hit the water on those this summer. Still….it is nice to dream a bit at the boat show each year.

We had a fantastic time at the boat show yesterday and it is a great way to spend a day. We find that most of the boat dealers have the patience of saints with the kids as they climb, explore, and dream onboard the boats.
It helps that adults are only $15 and children under 15 years of age are totally FREE

Pick #2: Dave and Buster’s is Now in Woburn
My boys LOVE it here. We’ve hiked to the Braintree location and even all the way to Providence. Now that there is a new location open in Woburn….I’m guessing we’ll clock much more time hitting the games. Dave and Buster’s is full of really great grown-up games…it is no Chuck E. Cheese. The kids are still going to rack up points or tickets and are still going to score some “stuff” that you don’t really need junking up your house, but at least the games are a blast…even for the parents. The restaurant is pretty good too.

Boats, Boats, and More Boats
If you didn’t get to the New England Boat Show this year, stay tuned for next year’s dates. I really can’t recommend it enough…whether you’re in the market for a boat…or just love boats.
With a huge number of boat manufacturers and industry vendors….as well as, engaging and interactive activities for the kiddos, a day at the boat show is a fantastic (and inexpensive) way to spend a day. We paid $26….kids under 15 are free. Parking was $15….which I suppose could be avoided if you don’t mind walking a bit and if there isn’t 9 feet of snow on the ground next year (fingers crossed). The most expensive part of the day was the quick bite to eat that the boys needed to rally through the second 3 hours.
Sadly, my iPhone battery died after 4 hours of photo taking so many boats are not represented in this slide show. I was also shooting more like a mom and less like a blog contributor, so if you can’t tell what type of boat it is, I apologize.

A Girl Can Dream
I took the boys to the New England Boat Show the other day. We arrived at 12:45 to be there for the 1:00 opening and left at 6:45. 6 hours. Honestly, we could have stayed much longer (and gosh knows the boys wanted to), but we we were stopping for dinner on the way home and I was getting antsy to hit the road.
I have about 200 photos of a large variety of boats to weed through, that I’ll post later in the week, but for now….think Hinckley. Sigh.
There are a million boats that I’d be happy with and there were several boat manufacturers that caught my eye the other day. There are some boats that I like for one reason…like fishing….and then there are boats that I like for different reasons…like “cruising.” There are even some boats that I would absolutely sell my home for the very second the boys go off to college and live upon happily for the rest of my life….like the Ranger Tug.
That having been said, there is one boat that I see in my dreams a bit more clearly than all others…and that is the one and only Hinckley. Ummm…sigh, again.
HINCKLEY YACHTS Worth taking a look.
If you were unfamiliar with Hinckley prior to last week, you may have quickly learned about them after having seen the images below go viral. The brand new 43-foot Talaria was making its way to the New England Boat Show when it lost its battle with snow banks at the intersection of Summer and Lincoln Street in Boston. The irony of the picnic-style boat, whose sleek design screams CAREFREE SUMMER DAYS, stuck in Boston’s dirty snowbanks in the midst of what could be a record breaking winter squeezed my heart just a bit.
So, I was delighted to see the Maggie Mae, gorgeous and unscathed, in all of her tremendous glory, in the Hinckley/Hunt Pavilion.
I was also delighted to learn a bit about the company, as well as, the boat owner who was eagerly anticipating the delivery of his purchase. I was even more delighted to hear that he was understanding and realistic as to his boat’s little city adventure. Kudos to you, sir.
The learning about the company part was somewhat accidental….and I have 5-year old, Finn, to thank for the lesson.
Upon stepping foot on the Maggie Mae, Finn immediately announced (and loudly I might add), “I don’t like this boat.” After a quick exchanging of, “I’m sorry…are you my son?” eye contact, he quickly explained. “These people are Philadelphia Flyers fans.”
Huh?
“Well, look, they have the Flyers logo all over the boat.”
Kudos to you also, Finn.
So, of course, we had to ask about their choice of logos.
And….here is the deal.
As an elementary school teacher I have spent a good amount of time teaching my students about Greek and Roman Gods and Goddesses…and while I would recognize the sandals worn by Greek God, Hermes, and Roman God, Mercury….I’m not sure that I ever knew that those sandals were called Talaria. The Talaria, as it would be, is a very fitting choice to serve as the logo of Hinckley Yachts if you ask me. Swift, regal, noble, refined….special.
While enjoying my one and only visit on the Maggie Mae (sigh), I also learned that her new owner, Robert A. Vincent, sounds like a really nice guy! Mr. Vincent, in fact, was due to arrive at the New England Boat Show later in the evening for a Christening Party for his gorgeous boat….with a catered party and all. Had my iPhone not died, I would have stalked a bit for some photos of the ceremony. Had I trusted that Thatcher and Finn would not choose that exact moment to demonstrate how tired they were becoming…I would have at least snuck back to observe from afar.
I would like to add that, while Thatcher, Finn and I were certainly not in the market for purchasing a Hinckley, the boat company’s representatives were cordial, helpful, kind, and patient with the boys…and with me. The only thing that could have made our visit nicer would have been a large, flat body of water, some sushi, and some champagne. And maybe the keys and a captain. Just saying.

Nichole’s Picks of the Week: February Vacation
Many kiddos are on vacation this coming week so I’m throwing out some extra suggestions to the universe in case you have some extra downtime.
The possibilities are endless and this list is not meant to be comprehensive…just some of my favorite choices!
Pick #1:
The boat show runs from February 14th-22nd at the the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center! Children 15 and under are FREE and adults are only $16. Actually, for a limited time, adults are only $13. It’s a good idea to purchase tix online as the line to buy tickets can get long at times.
My boys LOVED the car show….I can only imagine the mayhem that will ensue when we unleash them at the boat show.

Slope Fest! Lawn on the D February 20th-22nd
This event sounds like a blast! Tubing, music, food trucks, frost ice bar, winter sports exhibition, family friendly activities, and much more! This could easily become quite the staycation. Book an inexpensive room and make a little getaway out of it!
Winter on D’s Slope Fest, a three-day wintertime festival offering city-dwellers an urban escape featuring a two-story-high snow slope for tubing, downhill winter sport exhibitions on the slope, a custom-designed illuminated bar carved out of ice by Boston’s Frost Ice Bar, activities for families and the young at heart, a hot Latin dance party and more!
With over five feet of snow blanketing The Lawn, Winter on D’s Slope Fest offers Bostonians the chance to tube down a 70-foot-long slope made of fresh snowy powder – without heading to the mountains. You can leave your snow tubes at home as they will be provided by the MCCA, but make sure to buy a ticket* to ensure that you get a chance to slide down the snowiest hill in Boston! The slope will also be the location for an hour-long sport exhibition featuring the SnowRiders, a team of experienced skiers and snowboarders, who will be twisting and turning in the air to show off their hottest moves on and off the slope**.
Once you’ve had your fill of tubing, grab a hot beverage or choose from local wine and beer selections from the ice bar provided by Boston’s Frost Ice Bar, the world’s largest permanent indoor ice bar in the U.S. Order a special drink to pair it with your favorite menu item from one of the many food trucks that will be on-site for Slope Fest.
Watch Latin dance performances by MetaMovements and even learn the latest dance steps before trying them out yourself during a Latin dance party that will take place before Friday’s Slope Fest downhill winter sport exhibition.
If that isn’t enough, Slope Fest will also feature fun family friendly activities, music from DJ Frankie White, fire pits on The Lawn and more (think snowy selfie photo opps)!

I’m not typically an arcade fan, but my boys love it here and I actually usually have a pretty good time too! We’ve been to the Providence and the Braintree locations. We eat a decent lunch, play a ton of games, the boys run around like crazy scoring tickets, and then cash them in for some silly little prize.

New England Boat Show: Dazed and Confused
Wow, what an unbelievable amount of boat stuff all in one place. If you put all these boats in the water the ocean level would rise at least a few inches.
Cape Ann Marina has just way too much cool stuff going on. If you have not had breakfast at the Mile Marker Restaurant lately, order one of the Eggs Benedict and don’t forget the home fries. (Menu here.) These are not your ordinary home fries. They do some kind of magical double cooking of them so they are soft on the inside and crunchy but not greasy on the outside. I could just eat them alone for breakfast but their Benedict sauce has just the right amount of creamy goodness, and their crab cakes … oh wait, they also have a pretty nice marina, swimming pool (buy a punch card!), and they’ll fix your engine. You have to click through their entire web page and dream about summer.
